Bush Stresses Immigration Bill's Compassion to Hispanic Leaders
The Christian Post ^ | Jun. 15 2007 | Michelle Vu

Posted on 06/15/2007 1:47:56 PM PDT by Baladas

WASHINGTON – At a gathering of Hispanic Christian and community leaders on Friday, President Bush pushed for support for an immigration bill that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, highlighting the compassion behind the bill.

Hispanic men and women were praised by Bush for making the United States more “vibrant” in fields ranging from art to business to religion, and for helping to change America for the better.

The president gave as example success stories of immigrants in the White House and government. He pointed to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) who is originally from the communist island of Cuba but is now a member of the United States Senate. He also spoke about a Hispanic American coast guard he recently met who graduated at the top of his class who shared in his speech about his migrant grandfather.

“Isn’t it a fabulous country where a migrant grandfather can come and have a dream and work hard, and there’s his grandson talking about the promise of America in front of the president of the Untied States and his classmates,” Bush said. “That’s the beauty of America.”

However, Bush did not neglect to mention the country’s responsibility to enforce the border, create a lawful way for foreign workers to fill vacant jobs, and resolve the status of illegal immigrants in the country “without amnesty and without animosity.”

“Helping the sick is Christian whether you like it or not.”

How about when they are strangers who have come in from off the street and taken up permanent residence in your home? And then brought other family members who took jobs away from you and your children? And they come from a Christian country overflowing with natural resources?

There is a point where charity becomes idiocy.

Compassion? What about the compassion for the 15 million + people whose identities have been stolen? What about compassion for the people who are working hard to legally immigrate? What about compassion for the legal Hispanic US citizens who are now being lumped into the same bucket as those who come here illegally? What about compassion for the border patrol agents who are in jail for doing their job?

Mr. President,

It is not “compassion”.

It is pusillanimity.

It’s poltroonism at its worst!

I could never understand why the immigration problem had to be solved in one sweeping package of legislation. Why not two or three or even four pieces of legislation? Why not start with border security, making sure that nobody enters our country who is not entitled to enter. After six months or more, if those laws are in place and working correctly, take up the matter of those who are already in our country illegally. The United States is a fair and compassionate country and can find measures that are fair and compassionate toward those working and otherwise law-abiding illegals. Amnesty, of course, is not one of them. Some route to citizenship should be explored and extended. Fines and fees could be waived for those who accept and succeed; deportation for those who don’t. Well, that’s just one idea; maybe you have other ideas that are even better.

Romans 13 applies to George Bush also. He is under the authority of the Constitution of the United States. He should enforce its laws, not enable its lawbreakers.

And tell me, when did Jesus tell his disciples to take money from OTHER people to give to the poor? We are the most charitable people on this earth, but even we have our limits.

IMHO, it is because some PTBs don't want anything to happen. They know that a comprehensive bill will always have something that someone doesn't like, and therefore, always be stalled. Piece by piece action actually has a chance of passing..

“Compassion”? Rewarding people who break the law, while at the same time punishing those who obey the law and follow the rules is compassion? Overwhelming our immigration system over the next 5-10 years so that it will be so much harder for legal immigrants to get visas through the legel process is compassion?

“change America for the better”? By providing incentives for scoff-laws and dangerous criminals to stay in the US, while at the same time making it more difficult for honest, hardworking immigrants to migrate here?

This is what I said about GWB in response to a begging letter from the RNC:

I voted for GWB twice, and I deeply regret it. His push for amnesty is a slap in the face to every American who votes, works, pays taxes-and especially to those who are veterans. My father fought for his country in WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam, and he was left a disabled veteran. What an insult to him and other veterans: Amnesty and US citizenship offered to those who are by definition lawbreakers, many of whom sympathize with racist hate groups like La Raza, Atzlan, MeCha, groups which openly espouse Reconquista. And all GWB does is call ‘vigilantes’ those who want to see the borders patrolled and immigration law enforced, and hint we’re racist.

The man’s utter indifference to the thousands of Americans killed, maimed, and otherwise victimized by illegal aliens (many times the number of those killed in Iraq) not to mention to the plight of those who have “merely” been displaced in the labor market, is chilling. I thought WJC’s and HRC’s contempt for Americans outside their little clique of wealthy limo liberals was offensive-GWB could give them lessons.

He spouts off about compassion to group, while making it plain he has nothing but contemptuous indifference to the American citizens who are suffering in every way imaginable from this influx of criminal aliens , many of whom are violent, many of whom have learned animosity towards Americans in their history classrooms! (There is NO COMPARISON between these people and the Irish and the Italians. We don't share a common border with those countries, nor are the citizens of those countries taught that they were robbed of land by the USA, and hence they have a right to reclaim those lands in any way possible.) What are the figures again : 12 Americans murdered by illegal aliens, plus 13 killed in accidents (generally drunk driving) at the hands of illegals, and add to those 25 daily the misery of the survivors-both the bereaved and those who survived the accidents. (Like that 19 year old girl whose story was told here on FR; she now has two 4" stumps where her legs used to be and is confined to a wheelchair for life because a drunk illegal plowed into her.)

GWB has no compassion whatsoever for these victims, or for the many victims there will be in the future.

It is becoming obivous that only heathens can be President and be well liked. Christian presidents who do Chirstian things are hated by the left and the right.

First, there is nothing Christian about encouraging lawbreaking, and subsidizing it with other people's money.

Second, the President's job is to defend the Constitution first and foremost. It is necessarily a secular job, and while I respect his Christianity, when it comes into conflict with the Constitution he must subordinate his religious views.

Can someone shut Jorge up. Just when I’ve seen enough he moves further to the left. At this point, most Dem Senators are to the right of Bush on the amnesty issue. This is indeed a sad day, I have lost all respect for Bush, he will go down as one of the most disgraceful presidents ever completely erasing the good work he has done on taxes, the war and Supreme Court Judges.

“I could never understand why the immigration problem had to be solved in one sweeping package of legislation”

Part of it is vote-pander to two ugly stereotypes at once. First of all the stereotype that if you prefer to reward the law-abiding and punish law-breakers, then you must be a hateful racist because certain laws affect hispanics more than other laws. Secondly, the stereotype that you can get hispanic Americans to vote for you if you ignore crime.

Trust me... many immigrant, hispanic, naturalized American citizens like myself are really put off by this double-insult.

I can no longer listen to that man's voice. When he comes on the TV, I have to hit the mute button and turn away from the screen. I can read his speeches here and elsewhere-but I just cannot stand to hear him any more.

Not only did I vote for him twice, I was one of those who stood for hours in the blazing sun to hear him speak, when he went on that cross country tour a few years back. I still have the ticket stubs somewhere. :-(

The sell-outs would NEVER get an Amnesty-only bill passed therefore they extort the American people by coupling Amnesty with border security.

elPresidente Boosh can't distinguish between Hispanic CITIZENS of America and illiterate Mexicans from Mexico. Obviously, Jorge doesn't understand that Mel Martinez is from Cuba. Cuba and Mexico are NOT THE SAME!

He and idiots like panty waist, Linseee Grahamesty are trying to make out like we are racists and bigots because we are against them. All of those who Jorge is mentioning are Hispanics who have been born in the US, or who have assimilated into our culture. They love America because like us, it is THEIR country too. I have NO PROBLEM with them.

I have a problem with illegals who have broken the very first law to come to America. I have a problem with the hardened criminals, gang members and terrorists who have entered into America ILLEGALLY. They HATE Americans. They wave Mexican flags. They carry signs that say WE stole THEIR country and they have plans to take it back. They don't even want to learn how to speak English. They follow racists groups like LaRaza, and MEChA in hating Americans. THEY ARE THE ONES I DON'T WANT HERE!

Not with this old kid. I was one of those that was constantly being called a “conspiracy nut”, a “reactionary”,...no, his agenda became noticed as far back as when Dad was talking about the New World Order. I must give Bush credit in a way — he did FOOL THE MAJORITY for some time after 2000. He kept the pro-illegal, society-engineering agenda well hidden to most...but it really began to show when the illegal issue came up and he constantly ran the other way.

Still most ignored the importance, and guys like me were assailed by the BushBots. No, if anything, please don’t put me in that category, that of the naive, the non-believers. I became clear what he was when the heavy spending and the avoidance of the illegal/border issue started getting swept under the rug, the attacks on the Border agents, the deliberate suppression of their activities started leaking out — this was years ago.

Sad situation for America to witness your own government turn against the core values of America, the rights of the people, and our precious Constitution — because that is EXACTLY what is happening. Our Republic hangs in the balance.

the president made a rare visit to the Capitol earlier this week and personally lobbied to Republican senators to support the bill.

According to Time President Bush's spent the recent lunch meeting listening to Senators and "telling Senators that the immigration problem has become one of national security."

Dare I wonder that just maybe Washington has been warned to stop the raids looking for ILLEGAL aliens [my description] and get them "regularized" before the "long hot summers" start which will make the 1960s look peaceful?

A percentage of the millions -- perhaps tens of millions -- of disgruntled folks faced with returning to their government-created cesspool, hellholes just might be real easy to stir to violence.

As bad as things were for many blacks of a couple of generations ago they were above all else, Americans. Not so the millions of other countries' citizens living here ILLEGALLY.

Is that "the immigration problem [that] has become one of national security?" Is that the reason that opposition to immigration "reform" has Washington saying that talk radio is the problem?

I remember the 1960s fires, violence and the curfews -- I remember the foreign flags and huge numbers from a year ago. I am not allowed to ask, are those huge numbers about to be stirred to violence? The left has not given up on its pledge to "bring it all down, man."
