Opponents of the immigration bill recognize that the vote on cloture (maybe tomorrow, but probably early next week) will be key. Outside groups are scoring a vote for cloture as a vote for the bill. Cloture will succeed with 60 votes. Outspoken critics of the bill can be expected to vote "No."
Yesterday, Georgia senators Chambliss and Isakson announced their opposition. Given the size of the unpersuadable caucus that will support cloture, opponents are fighting uphill.
Based on talking with well-informed sources, this is the most accurate list I've seen of the Republican senators whose intentions are unknown and whose support will be needed in order to defeat cloture: Richard Burr (N.C.), Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Kit Bond (Mo.), Pat Roberts (Kan.), Gordon Smith (Ore.), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Crapo (Ind.), Norm Coleman (Min.), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Bob Bennett (Utah), and John Sununu (N.H.). (And opponents hope they can count on about a dozen Democrats).
Independents hate this bill more than Republicans. Dem voters don't care for it either.
Sen. Bob Corker 202-224-3344
The last cloture vote is the BIGGEST VOTE.
They will have enough to reopen it for more ammendments.
Keep the pressure on them to tank this thing.
So is Corker according to the phone monkey I talked to yesterday, he wants to vote on KHB’s admendment..told the idiot the admendment was crap...it should NOT take TWO years to touchback, nor just head of house hold...and what about the nearly TRILLION dollar hit on SS that is in the admendment...he had no answer.
Over the past couple of days, I've heard - more that once -that Reid has now descended into bribing Senators for a cloture vote; that is, they'll be guaranteed that their pet amendment will be brought up if they commit to voting for cloture. It is being speculated that Kay Bailey falls into that category.
I certainly hope this isn't true.
I worry about Kay Bailey Hutchison.
I call her office every day and her staff says that she is not committing until she sees the new bill.
If you call give a Texas zip code like 78726.
Does she think 20 million new Democrat voters will vote for her a Republican?
True..but those two states are really trending waaay left...they may feel they have no choice..I’M NOT excusing them...just giving a possible rationale..
I am finding it increasingly hard to believe that they and their staff are stupid enough to buy into Reid’s deal that if they vote for cloture, their bill will be brought up for a vote (and is nevertheless guaranteed to lose). If their amendments are such a great idea, why didn’t they introduce them as free standing legislation? So I am now leaning toward the interpretation of this that says they are buying into Reid’s deal, knowing their pet amendment will fail, to GIVE THEMSELVES COVER TO VOTE FOR CLOTURE. A vote for cloture is a vote in support of this horrible legislation. Period. They think we are too dumb to figure this out.
AFL / CIO opposed to this bill. Good thing to point out to the Blue state Senators. That and that 3% of America (3%! Approve of Congress’ handling of immigration).
Of course, that's assuming they actually WANT to fight.
I am so disappointed in her stance. What in the world is she thinking? Is there something I’m missing? South Texas has already been inundated, hasn’t she been down there? I am truly confused by the stance of some people on this subject, what is propelling them to support this?
I suspect Hatch is a lost cause. He is the former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and could have pushed through an enforcement bill when he had the chance. He didn’t. He could have brought pressure on the White House to enforce the current laws, he didn’t. He has turned into a squish, and is another one of those idiots who gets giddy when Ted Kennedy makes nice and pays attention to him.
Look at Malkins site. I ve seen many unions on the list lobbying congress to pass this Amnesty.
Unions say jump. Democrats say how high. Democrat senators voted 86% for ending debate and so for passing this horrible Amnesty bill that will allow 20 million illegals to bring their family members to the U.S.A. I doubt unions and Democrats are against each other this much.
Say what you will about the GOP. But never in the 12 years the GOP controlled Congress did they try to railroad an Amnesty bill, sneak a bill through congress without any debate and against the will of 80% of the American people. And in 12 years they never passed an Amnesty bill like this that would turn America into a 3rd world socialist hell hole.Democrats who control congress are doing all of this and more.
..and we know how Bill will vote.
AFL - CIO announced opposition to the bill yesterday.

As it has before, for the sake of open deliberation and public education, The Heritage Foundation is making this legislation publicly available to encourage widespread debate and discussion. Heritage Foundation analysts will be reading this legislation and considering its implications—as will everyone outside the confines of the narrow group that conceived it—as quickly as possible.

I am confident Pat Roberts will vote “no” on cloture. I have
been calling his office and Senator Roberts seems to have
his head screwed on.
Thanks for posting this. I just contacted Kaye Bailey. I did not know she was shaky on this issue.

I have no confidence in Brownback. However, I have confidence in Kansans that if he votes for the illegal invasion, he won’t even be able to get elected to the state senate when its done.
