A GOP Plan to Oust Cheney [good for laughs]
The Washington Post ^ | 7/26/07 | Sally Quinn

Posted on 06/25/2007 9:33:07 PM PDT by SirJohnBarleycorn

The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week's blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.

As the reputed architect of the war in Iraq, Cheney is viewed as toxic, and as the administration's leading proponent of an attack on Iran, he is seen as dangerous. As long as he remains vice president, according to this thinking, he has the potential to drag down every member of the party -- including the presidential nominee -- in next year's elections.

Removing a sitting vice president is not easy, but this may be the moment. I remember Barry Goldwater sitting in my parents' living room in 1973, in the last days of Watergate, debating whether to lead a group of senior Republicans to the White House to tell President Nixon he had to go.

(snip)

Today, another group of party elders, led by Sen. John Warner of Virginia, could well do the same. They could act out of concern for our country's plummeting reputation throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East.

For such a plan to work, however, they would need a ready replacement. Until recently, there hasn't been an acceptable alternative to Cheney -- nor has there been a persuasive argument to convince President Bush to make a change. Now there is.

(snip)

That leaves Fred Thompson. Everybody loves Fred.

(snip)

He could be just the partner to bring out Bush's better nature -- or at least be a sensible voice of reason. I could easily imagine him telling the president, "For God's sake, do not push that button!" -- a command I have a hard time hearing Cheney give.

It would make much more sense, and I think that’s what the Sally Quinn types are really afraid of.

this week's blockbuster series in The Post

Nothing like a little self-aggrandizement to start off a fantasy column.

imagine how rigorous a VP confirmation process would be. Not only would you have to put up with the Senate characters, but the radicals in the House

The House would have no part in it -- it's a Senate confirmation only.

Written for consumption of the DU, MoveOn and Kos crowd.

Oust Cheney???

I was hoping that George W. would resign (or maybe get impeached due to his insane support for illegal immigration) and Cheney would be elevated to PRESIDENT!!!

Somehow, I cannot see Cheney doing all these IDIOTIC things George W has been doing these past three years.

Anyone else concur??

The ONLY place Mr. Cheney is going is...fishing! In about 18 months. For the rest of his life, LOL! God Bless Him. :)

The new journalism - fantasy - something we can all engage in.

I have dreams of the Washington Post cult compound burning to the ground, the metrosexual Post writers flogged in the public square and the female Marxists branded with the hammer and sickle on their foreheads.

I concur, except for the impeachment. I didn’t agree w/ the moonbats prior to Bush being taken over by the pods and I can’t support it now. I AM TRULY disappointed with my President though, and am still in love w/ Cheney!!

Apparently so does Sally Quinn. I'm amazed by this man's effect on women.

I think Cheney has served his country well. I wouldn’t go duck hunting with the guy though !!!

I would gladly go hunting with Cheney many times before I would even consider getting in a car with anyone named Kennedy.

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

So either house could hold up the confirmation. The dems would simply refuse to confirm anybody that Bush nominated. And the drive-by media would simply carry water for the dems.

Dear Sally Quinn,

You lefties should pray every night that nothing happens to Pres. Bush or you will wake up to Pres. Cheney. Muahahahah!

Always a big time Dick Cheney fan,

"the moonbats want to impeach both Bush AND Cheney. That would make Nancy Pelosi president"

Only in their dreams. If The president was removed first, Cheney would become President, and he could appoint a new Vice President. If the Vice President was removed first, The President would appoint a new Vice President. The only way Pelosi could be President, is if President Bush and Vice President Cheney were to be removed simultaneously. Other than death, there is no plausible scenario where this could happen.
