Are you into the multicultural agenda? Is the drive to diversity a big deal with you? Perhaps not. Maybe you're one of those people who actually like to judge people based on their individual personality and integrity.
A Harvard political scientist, Robert Putnam, did a little study that might interest you. His topic ... immigration and ethnic diversity. The results are shocking, not at all what he expected. In fact, the study results that this liberal, academia bed-wetter wanted to wait until after the immigration debate to publish it. Why? Because it is damaging to the pro-illegal immigration debate. Not only that, but he was scrambling to find ways to compensate for the negative effects of diversity. Are you getting this? He was afraid what right-wingers would do with the news. He had something that went against his liberal, academia beliefs and withheld the study until he could figure out a way to spin the results so as not to offend his and his liberal colleague's tender sensibilities.
OK ... gotcha. Now you're curious. You want to know what the study said, right? Putnam's study reveals that immigration and diversity not only reduce social capital between ethnic groups, but also within the groups themselves. He uses the analogy of a turtle, saying that people who live in ethnically diverse setting "hunker down." They don't assimilate. They don't embrace each other and share tortilla dinners together. They sit in front of the television and waste away .. they pull into their shells.
Putnam found that the more diverse the neighborhood, the less residents trust neighbors. In ethnically diverse cities like LA and San Francisco, 30% of people say that they trust their neighbors. In ethnically homogeneous cities, the figure is as high as 80%. Putnam says that people in diverse communities tend "to withdraw even from close friends, to expect the worst from their community and its leaders, to volunteer less, give less to charity and work on community projects less often, to register to vote less, to agitate for social reform more, but have less faith that they can actually make a difference, and to huddle unhappily in front of the television." Sounds like a neighborhood you we would all really love to live in, doesn't it? This magic ethnically diverse community that we've been hearing so much about doesn't sound like a community that is going to be all that active in government. Perhaps they don't even care about who is representing them and what issues are facing the communities in which they live.
And it doesn't matter whether they are poor communities or safe communities ... the findings are all the same. In general, Putnam found that the more people are brought into contact with another race or culture, the more they stick to their own, and the less they trust others.
This is the America that our Senate have just promoted with their amnesty bill. We're not speaking racism here. We're speaking culturalism. People tend to gravitate toward a culture they understand and are comfortable with.
Here is a study that we're probably not going to hear much about.

But seriously, would people care, or even NOTICE, the ethnicity of someone else if they shared the same culture and values?
There was a family in a German heritage small midwestern town that adopted a black baby girl and raised her in the community. She grew up, was raised in the same culture as everyone else, went through high school - and seriously, people didn’t even notice that she was black - to the point of being embarrassed sometimes.
It seems to be, based on the cover that they have a picture of, (also, several of the nation names are the exact same, so, I’m going to say this is it)
And having said this is it, I think it is a book everyone in America should read. I do think it oversimplifies things by not factoring in specific things in the various nations, for example, in the gulf states, the divide between the coast and the interior, but, I found it to be spot on. As someone who travels the country alot, I have often experienced culture shock.
I suspect that somewhere in the world there are a few people that don’t discriminate or have predjudices but I haven’t met them. Diversity is nothing more than camoflaged hypocrisy.
Diversity is ginned up by the radical left and swallowed by those who choose to follow its mantras.
Diversity is described as making people aware of their differences. This only serves to create tension and conflict.
It comes from the radicals who want to recreate the Marxist dialectic using racial, ethnic, religious and even “sexual orientation” differences to create conflict and bring about a new socialist society.
The conflict created by the diversity propaganda becomes a means of justifying more government power in the name of “diversity.”
At one school last year a “tolerance troupe” performed using the “N” word on stage and inciting anger in the audience of high school students. It was designed to radicalize them about “diversity.”
No nappy-headed hoes on the moon?
Texas, now that is another place as well. Texas could easily be a country on its own. Its people still think passionately about being Texans.

I am of Italian descent - 100 proof! When my families came to America they longed, with all their hearts, to become Americans.
At family gatherings, a few of us still speak a little Italian, we certainly cook Italian and look Italian!
But...we are all Americans, and very proud of it.
That national pride and love of country and a common language is the cultural glue that holds a country together.
How can it be that so many purportedly bright people, i.e., senators, cannot understand this premise?

I’d agree about northern va, but not the others. Just because Northerners come in doesn’t mean they make it more northern. If anything, a transplant often finds he has to watch what he says unless he offend someone.
What I am saying though is, there is a weaker sense of national unity down here than the rest of the country, and I think of any region in the country, we are most likely to break off if conditions favor such an outcome. Remember, alot of northern born merchants lived down here before the first war, and we still seceded, and while they had initially opposed it, once we had made our course of action clear, they were as loyal to the cause as everyone else. And I seriously doubt any Southern black is going to cede to a federal government it’s right of basic protection, it’s just not going to happen.

I live down here and agree with you.
I’ve even heard a ranking member of the police department here tell me that IF an order ever came down from “on high”to begin a weapons roundup, you’d see fistfights at and even hear gunfire from the local cop shops ‘cause a of these guys KNOW what will happen once our would-be masters have all the guns. They don’t want to be slaves either.

There might have been Chinatowns, Italian neighborhoods and toxic neighborhoods in most major cities, but the critical part is that the overwhelming majority of all those ethnic or national groups were scattered throughout the population. Still are.
That is why the concept of "Americans" is possible. Otherwise we would all today be described by our tribal past. Silly season.
Without some strong easily perceived physical differences, most Americans are indistinguishable from one another; language, customs and attitude is what binds them together as a whole, greater than the sum of its parts.
It takes a conscious decision NOT to assimilate; Conversely, it takes not only a conscious decision but effort to assimilate. If one is treated as a helpless savage unable to care for oneself and treated as a pet, the dark side of human nature takes over.
If I can survive with no effort, and I am told that I am just as good and valuable as people who actually are, why should I seek change in myself?
