A San Bernardino County jury today acquitted a former sheriff's deputy of attempted voluntary manslaughter for opening fire on an unarmed, off-duty Air Force police officer after a high-speed chase last year, a brutal shooting videotaped by a bystander and aired nationwide.

Ivory John Webb Jr., 46, the son of a former Compton police chief, was the first law enforcement officer ever to face criminal charges for an on-duty shooting in San Bernardino County. Webb, who also was also acquitted of assault with a deadly firearm, faced up to an 18-year prison sentence.

there was no evidence at all to lead you to believe there was any reasonable doubt he was innocent.

Au contraire...I'm in the area, and there have been lengthy daily newspaper reports on this case.

I started out thinking that Webb was toast, toast, toast -- but by the time it went to the jury I was certain I'd vote to acquit.

Almost NO parts of the prosecution's case came anywhere near "beyond reasonable doubt".

I think the cop went WAY over the line. I read some postings from the military guy; he did everything the cop asked him to do.

Open Season on the Good Guys, in court. I hope he appeals.

It was a pretty quick deliberation....

Yep - you'll see by my other post nearby that I followed the newspaper reports (much more in-depth) in the Riverside Press Enterprise.

I'm surprised it took them more than whatever it'd take to do a straw poll to find him not guilty.

Webb had no justification whatsoever to shoot this guy.

He wasn't the driver; he obeyed every order given to him; Webb shot him.

You have "reasonable doubt"?

Now, after this foolisness what do you think the chances are of the Airman getting off if he should seek personal satisfaction? He's a cop too.

Cop on cop action should elicit total neutrality in the civilian ranks right?

Like I said it's getting like Mexico out there.

I am sure this and Carrion’s .18 BAC didnt help it out.

Luis Escobedo said he consumed 12 beers and five shots of tequila before getting behind the wheel of a friend’s Corvette.

Don't sit back there in Indiana, having your little emotional kneejerk reactions and tell me - a LOCAL who followed this trial on a daily basis - what to think.

Sheesh. There are some real frigging idiots on this board.

Carrion wasn't driving. He simply got out of the car, laid on the ground, and then foolishly attempted to follow Webb's orders.

We had a kid in nearby Maryland, an Eagle Scout, just a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend that got stopped by the cops because it was like a car then being pursued.

The local cops told the kid to get out of the car. An FBI topgun, Christopher Baga, shot the kid in the face the second he opened the door.

Which means that cops sometimes do very stupid things ~ even career ending stupid things. See: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/647080/posts

This Webb guy sounds like that FBI agent ~ time for a different job somewhere else, and NO GUNS.

Unless you actually went and VISITED them in person, does this mean squat? The internet has turned local news into halfway around the world news.

Oh...there's so much more than that; you might want to drop out of this thread, because your lack of knowledge is becoming more and more apparent with each sentence.

If a prosecutor does not want a conviction, he isn’t going to get one.

So? Are you related to Webb? I’ve been reading about it on the SoCal papers online (I’m from SD). What gem did you dig out of the local coverage that said being drunk is a good reason to get shot three times?

You are a foolish person. We do not call other posters here "frigging idiots".

If you have a problem what you do is debate the issues politely, or bring in the evidence and explain it to the rest of us.

Since you followed the "trial" daily and know all the arguments pro and con on every issue as put forward by various lawyers, you'll really have to explain to us why there's a film showing what everybody in the country has seen ~ a cop tells a guy to get up and then shoots him.

I am not a foolish person...I call fools fools and "frigging idiots" when I spot them. Got it?

Do your research on this case - since it's obviously grabbed you by the balls - and come back here in the morning with a clear and sober head...

No need for me to do research on this case when I've seen the film and have the world's most foremost expert on the case right here.

And cut out the "friggin'" and other trash talking. People here are expected to be literate.
