The Dream Act Comes to the Tri-Cities (The Immigration Battle Continues)

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The comprehensive immigration bill's failure in the Senate hasn't stopped all immigration bills. One Latino group is gathering support from Washington educators on a bill that would allow students to become permanent legal residents.

The bill is called the Dream Act and supporters from across the state are drumming up more people to back it. The Dream Act was attached to the comprehensive immigration bill but has also been proposed by itself in both the House and Senate.

The bill would allow students to gain permanent legal residency by completing two years of college like at CBC in Pasco. It would also grant immediate temporary residency for undocumented high school graduates who have lived in the U.S. fat least five years.

Latino leaders say the bill is a fair solution for Latino students. The Latino Educational Achievement Association's Ricardo Sanchez says, "I've looked into the eyes of too many of those students in the last year and seen hope but also seen pain of not being able to complete their education."

Sanchez says he has gotten numerous letters of support from school discricts and education associations across the state. Right now, the bill is sitting in both the House and the Senate, waiting for either house to act on it.

Stopping comprehensive amnesty was great. But the next stage of the battle is to stop the provisions of the bill from being enacted a piece at a time. The victory the other day was a great defensive victory, but it's time to hold the government's feet to the fire and demand real enforcement and border control before they can lull us back to business as usual

We MUST stop the racist DREAM ACT, which would grant in-state tuition to those who break the law, while punishing Americans from other states who have to pay MORE for their education. NO TO MINI-AMNESTY!!!

You can’t stop it all, only delay it. This will pass as a face saving measure. We can attach some enforcement to it. Perhaps we can get the Senate to agree to paint our side of the fence at some future date....If funds are available...

Yes we can! Or do you want your children to lose their place to illegals AND pay MORE if they seek to pursue their studies in another state? Amnesty for illegals is wrong and its wrong to deprive American children of THEIR future! Defeat the DREAM ACT now!!!

I’m tired of their face savings and their conventional wisdom. Business as usual has gotten into a crisis situation. I think we need to push them and push them and push them until they get serious about enforcing the border. They may be a little hard of hearing, but they’re not totally deaf as we saw the other day.

A law removing federal funding from states and cities
that support illegal invasion will work.

You got to watch them all the time and let them hear from you. If we don’t they’ll resume the routine that got us in this mess in the first place.

That's what Latino leaders is say "a fair solution for Latino students".

I wish a successful life for every young person. But a law isn't right that rewards lawbreakers to the detriment of those that follow the rules. And I know we are a generous people but a little bit of self-interested behavior is a mark of sanity. After all, if we don't look after law abiding American citizens first, who in the wide world will?

Exactly. The way I see it, if they don't have to obey the law, why should we? We Americans are tired of being treated like chumps by our own government!

Exactly. They get subsidized tuition. They pay a lower rate thanks to you while you get stuck paying the full freight for your own kid! Now tell me where's the justice in the so-called DREAM Act for American kids?

There is something fundamentally wrong with a government that provides better representation and superior services to lawbreaking foreigners here illegally than to the citizens who obey the laws and pay the bills.

The arrogance of legislators, governors and presidents has gotten out of control.

Just my feeling. If our leaders don't think much about obeying the law, average folks will feel released from the social compact that binds us to them. If all of us stopped paying our taxes, the rotten system would collapse of it own dead weight. Maybe we should it do it to get their attention. Because if things don't change, this country is headed for a crash.

I guess I better call Johnny and Saxby and tell them no on this Dream garbage too. I’m telling you. We need to run people at the primary level that will stop this. Get these backstabbers out of Wasington.

My "dream act" would be for the government of Mexico to write us a check to pay for the education of Mexican citizens, then another check for each year their citizens are here illegally for the difference between their total taxes and their use of American government services.

If the Mexican government isn't liquid enough to meet their obligations we could take their oil in trade.

If we stop paying our taxes, they will send in the feds with guns like in New Hampshire. We are not illegals. They are not concerned about our rights or dreams. However, there is one legal way we might hurt them. Stop paying extra taxes so you get a refund. Keep your money out of their hands as long as possible.
