That's the question Bobby Schindler asked in the case involving Jesse Ramirez, the Arizona man whose case paralleled that of Schindler's sister, Terri Schiavo, until Ramirez woke up. The Arizona Republic reports:

...Bobby Schindler of the Florida-based Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation placed the blame on a medical establishment quick to dismiss patients with brain injuries.

Schindler is the brother of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman who died in 2005 after a decades-long court battle.

"What is the rush?" he asked. "This is not the first time we've heard of cases like this where doctors want to write off the chance of recovery, and the family, when they're told this, will make a decision to end a person's life.

"In the case of Mr. Ramirez, he'd be dead now."

Why is Jesse alive? His family sought legal intervention with the help of the Alliance Defense Fund:

His siblings and parents refused to give him up for dead, and today, Jesse Ramirez is alive and conscious.

Two weeks ago, he was the center of a family battling over of whether he should live or die.

Now, he can hug and kiss, nod his head, answer yes and no questions, give a thumbs-up sign and sit in a chair.

This is happening all the time but because so many innocent peoplea STILL think doctors are gods. If the doc says anything, the loved ones believe them without any reservations. cues to watch for: "they are failing", "no appetite", "sign here".

Every once in a while one gets caught.

Always ask what all the meds are and do not leave the facility. That is when bad things can happen if there is a rogue staff or doctor. Remember there is big money in organ harvesting. (the free part is the actual organ).

I just heard that the “doctor” pleaded innocent.

I hope he gets what he deserves.

My dad lost his appetite because of the drugs, and mom insisted that he only take the drugs that he was taking before he entered the hospital - blood pressure, etc.

When the drugs were removed, dad got his appetite back.

I don’t think this hospital was trying to harm him, but doctors and hospitals can be very incompetent at times.

We should all put our heads together and write letters to editors warning folks about the kinds of things that go on, as you mentioned in your last post.

The San Francisco transplant surgeon charged with three felonies in connection with a failed organ harvest in San Luis Obispo last year was booked at County Jail late Tuesday and released after posting $10,000 bail.

Hootan Roozrokh, 33, is accused of dependent adult abuse, administering a harmful substance (a topical antiseptic) into a human, and prescribing excessive amounts of painkillers and sedatives.

The doctor “looks forward to the opportunity to clear his good name in a court of law and re-establish his reputation as a distinguished and respected surgeon,” according to a statement released by Roozrokh’s lawyer, M. Gerald Schwartzbach, based in Marin County.

The local case is the first of its kind nationally against a transplant surgeon, and experts have cautioned its negative publicity could discourage potential organ donors and transplant surgeons.

Prosecutors allege that on Feb. 3, 2006, Roozrokh, acting as part of the Oakland-based California Transplant Donor Network’s transplant team, attempted to hasten the death of a 25-year-old disabled man, Ruben Navarro.

A 38-year-old man who spent more than five years in a mute, barely conscious state as a result of a severe head injury is now communicating regularly with family members and recovering his ability to move after having his brain stimulated with pulses of electric current, neuroscientists are reporting.

"I still cry every time I see him, but now it's tears of joy," said the man's mother, in a conference call with reporters Wednesday. Her name was withheld, to protect the patient's privacy. "He can speak, he can watch movies without falling asleep, he can say Mom and Pop, and 'I love you, Mommy.' "

Doctors have long used the implant surgery, known as deep brain stimulation, to treat Parkinson's disease. Over the past two decades they have also performed it on a handful of people with brain injuries, including Terry Schiavo, the Florida woman who died in 2005 after her feeding tube was removed amid a national debate over her care.

In many of those cases, like Schiavo's, the brain was so profoundly damaged that the operation made no difference.

It is essential that the media treats Terri as the exception as the same great work could help anyone else in the universe except Terri. After all doing so would suggest they took the wrong side...

But Jack Kevorkian is not coming just to spread his morally repugnant message of physician-assisted suicide. He’ll be paid $50,000 for his trouble.

Only days after being released from a Michigan prison on parole for his second-degree murder conviction of a man suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease, Accent, UF’s student speaker’s bureau, was the first to invite Kevorkian to speak about his immoral mission. According to Kevorkian’s attorney, the former pathologist has accepted the invitation and will earn the big payday—and it’s likely Kevorkian’s speech at UF will be his first, although other speaking requests are coming in.

Kevorkian’s Oct. 11 speech is drawing criticism from Bobby Schindler, brother of Terri Schindler Schiavo, the severely brain-damaged woman who died in 2005 after her feeding tube was removed by court order. As head of the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation, Schindler has begun a petition drive to UF president and the Student Government Association (of which Accent is a part) asking that the invitation to Kevorkian be rescinded.

“It is unacceptable for the University of Florida to give a platform to Jack Kevorkian, a man who willfully helped take people’s lives, some of whose only ailment was depression, and pay him $50,000 to spread his violent message of ‘mercy killing’ to the students of the University of Florida,” the petition asserts.
