In Iraq, Najaf Mosque Imam Welcomes U.S.-Iran Negotiations On Iraq, But Tells Iraq’s Neighbors Terrorism Must Stop
In his Friday sermon, Sayyed Sadruldin Al-Qabanchi, imam of the Najaf mosque and a leader in the Supreme Islamic Council, welcomed the U.S.-Iran negotiations but called on Iraq’s neighbors to do their utmost to put an end to terrorism in Iraq.
He said that if Iraq’s neighbors wanted the U.S. to withdraw, they must stop terrorism. By his account, 4,000 terrorists from Syria and Saudi Arabia have been killed in Iraq.
Al-Qabanchi called on Saudi Arabia to put an end to the fatwas issued by the country’s religious establishment calling for the destruction of the Dome of Ali in Najaf [Imam Ali, Muhammad’s son-in-law, is the most significant figure in Shi’ite Islam]. He characterized the religious establishment in Saudi Arabia as Wahhabist, terrorist and takfiriya (accusing other Muslims of apostasy).

Coalition Forces detain 27 suspects, kill three terrorists
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces detained 27 suspected terrorists and killed three terrorists during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq key leadership and foreign terrorist facilitators in central and northern Iraq Tuesday and Wednesday.
During operations Tuesday in Baghdad and Tarmiyah, Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists. The targeted individual in the Baghdad raid, a suspected key operative in the deadly Baghdad improvised explosive device and vehicle-borne IED network, was successfully apprehended by ground forces during a precision raid. A close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq Baghdad emir and another al-Qaeda in Iraq operative were detained in Tarmiyah.
South of Tikrit during operations Wednesday morning, Coalition Forces detained six alleged terrorists while targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq key leader responsible for coordinating attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces and using kidnappings, extortion and manipulation of the fuel market to fund his terrorist operations. One female Iraqi civilian was also injured during the operation when Coalition Forces breeched the door of a targeted building. She was treated on scene by military medical personnel and transported to a military medical facility for further treatment.
“Al-Qaeda in Iraq has a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and they continually place innocent Iraqis in harms way in the midst of their terrorist activities,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.
During early morning raids east of Balad, Coalition Forces detained 11 suspected terrorists for their association with a high level foreign terrorist facilitator with links to the foreign terrorist networks in North Africa, Europe and the Arabian Peninsula. During the raid, three armed men were observed maneuvering towards ground forces. Responding to the immediate threat, ground forces engaged the armed terrorists, killing one. The remaining two terrorists moved into a tactical fighting position, which resulted in ground forces using appropriate escalation of force, calling in close air support to engage the armed terrorists in their fighting position. Ground forces assess that both terrorists were killed from the close air support strafing.
In the northern city of Mosul, Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists, one of whom is assessed to be a key leader in the Mosul al-Qaeda in Iraq network. The targeted individual is suspected of leading a sniper cell and a network emplacing IEDs that have resulted in the deaths of multiple civilians, as well as participating in an attack on the Iraqi National Guard building in western Mosul.
During operations to the west and north of Tarmiyah, three suspected terrorists were detained for their association with an al-Qaeda in Iraq emir near Tarmiyah. In pervious Coalition Forces operations targeting associates of the same al-Qaeda in Iraq emir, ground forces were fired on by a terrorist dressed in women’s clothing who was attempting to elude Coalition Forces.
In southern Tarmiyah, Coalition Forces detained one suspected terrorist for his association with al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leadership of the Northern Belts who use the area south of Tarmiyah as an attempted safe haven from Coalition Forces.
“There are no safe havens for al-Qaeda in Iraq,” said Garver. “Coalition Forces continually seek out and expose the terrorists in every nook and cranny where they seek to hide.”

Iraqi Security Forces, U.S. Special Forces battle terrorists near Doura
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO
BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces, with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, detained two suspected al-Qaeda terrorists while conducting an intelligence driven operation in the Doura neighborhood of Baghdad, July 29.
The two targeted individuals were detained without incident. Iraqi Security Forces also seized one AK-47, two loaded magazines and more than $3500 U.S. dollars.
After completing the raid, Iraqi and U.S. Forces received enemy fire from several buildings across the street. After positively identifying four armed insurgents, U.S. Special Forces called in precision aerial fires that resulted in four insurgents killed.
An immediate battle assessment confirmed the four insurgents were killed and no Iraqi civilians present.
No Iraqi or Coalition Forces were injured during this operation.

Local tip leads to cache discovery

MOSUL, Iraq – Tipped off by an Iraqi citizen, Iraqi army soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division conducted a joint mission with Coalition Force Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, July 30, to remove illegal weapons from the neighborhoods of western Mosul.
Focusing on the Wade Hajar and Al Sinaa neighborhoods, IA and Coalition troops captured a detainee with knowledge of a substantial weapons cache at a home located in the Al Najar neighborhood.
Inside the house, the joint forces discovered a spider hole hidden under tiles beneath a stove. The tiles were broken away revealing a lit room containing: one anti-aircraft gun barrel; one anti-aircraft gun receiver; one sniper rifle, 2,000 rounds of PKM machine gun ammunition, two AK-47 assault rifles, three rocket-propelled grenades and miscellaneous improvised explosive device-making materials. Two suspected terrorists were also detained for interrogation.
“This discovery is another great example of the Iraqi army taking the lead and generating the intelligence that allows us to find and remove dangerous weapons like these off of the streets,” said Maj. Joseph Kopser, executive officer, 2-7 Cavalry.

New bill calls for revoking citizenship from those guilty of breach of allegiance

The Knesset’s Internal Affairs Committee approved MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) proposal to instate a bill revoking citizenship from any citizen found guilty of breach of allegiance to Israel.
“The second Intifada and last summer’s war have uncovered many cases of citizens allying themselves with enemy forces. We have no choice but to use some drastic measures,” said Erdan. The bill will be submitted to its first reading in the next Knesset plenum. (Amnon Meranda)

“German terror trial tapes found”

Ohio Man Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy
to Provide Material Support to Terrorists
WASHINGTON– An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth L. Wainstein, U.S. Attorney Gregory G. Lockhart of the Southern District of Ohio, FBI Deputy Assistant Director, Counterterrorism Division, Arthur M. Cummings, and Julie L. Myers, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced today.
Nuradin M. Abdi, 35, a Somali national living in Columbus, Ohio, was named in a four-count indictment returned under seal in the U.S. District Court in Columbus on June 10, 2004. This afternoon, Abdi pleaded guilty in federal court to Count One of the indictment, which charged him with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 2339A. Abdi agreed to serve a 10-year prison sentence pursuant to the terms of his plea agreement.
Count One of the indictment specifically alleged that on April 27, 1999, Abdi applied to the Immigration and Naturalization Service - now known as ICE - for a travel document, wherein he concealed his destination by representing that he intended to visit Germany and Saudi Arabia for the purpose of “Umrah (Holly[sic] - Mecca) and visit my relative,” when he actually planned to travel to Ogaden, Ethiopia, for the purpose of obtaining military-style training in preparation for violent jihad. Abdi allegedly sought training in radio usage, guns, guerilla warfare and bombs.
“Today’s case should serve notice to those who would take advantage of our country’s freedoms to support and conspire with international terrorists who are our sworn enemies,” said Assistant Attorney General Wainstein.
“This plea is the product of a persistent global investigation by agents and officers who used every legal tool available to document the actions of one who conspired to aid terrorists,” U.S. Attorney Lockhart said.
“While living in our country, Nuradin M. Abdi endangered the national security of the United States by conspiring to provide support to terrorists,” said FBI Deputy Assistant Director Cummings. “Let there be no mistake, the FBI will work tirelessly with our partners in the law enforcement and intelligence communities to pursue suspected terrorists and their supporters and disrupt their criminal activities.”
“This case demonstrates ICE’s efforts to help prevent acts of terrorism through the aggressive enforcement of our immigration laws,” said ICE Assistant Secretary Myers. “Obtaining immigration benefits through document fraud is a serious threat to public safety and national security. ICE is committed to continuing to work with our law enforcement partners to safeguard against those seeking to exploit the immigration system to support terrorist activity.”
According to the statement of facts agreed upon by the government and the defendant, Abdi first entered the United States in 1995 using a false passport. He once again illegally entered the United States from Canada in 1997. Abdi was later granted asylum in this country based on a series of false statements.
In the ensuing years, Abdi befriended co-conspirators Christopher Paul and Iyman Faris in Ohio. Christopher Paul was later arrested and indicted in April 2007 on charges of providing material support, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) in the Southern District of Ohio. Iyman Faris was later convicted of providing material support and conspiracy to provide material support to Al Qaeda. He is currently serving a 20-year prison term.
In 1999, the defendant made plans to travel to overseas training camps to prepare himself for violent jihad. He initially sought to go to Kosovo, then changed plans in favor of Chechnya, and later planned to attend a training camp in Ethiopia that he had heard of. In 2000, Abdi traveled to Kenya and learned that the Ethiopian camp no longer existed. He then went on to Somalia, where he met with a warlord associated with Islamic extremists. Abdi returned to the United States in March 2000.
According to the statement of facts, Abdi told FBI agents that in August 2002 he proposed a plot to bomb a shopping mall. Abdi was later provided with compact discs containing instructions on how to make explosives. In Dec. 2002, Faris described to Abdi a potential plot to launch missile attacks against various landmarks in Washington, D.C.
Shortly after these discussions, Faris was taken into custody and began making statements to the FBI. Federal agents arrested Abdi on Nov. 28, 2003. Abdi subsequently agreed to be interviewed by FBI agents and admitted conspiring with Faris, Paul and others to provide material support to foreign terrorists. These admissions by Abdi have been corroborated in a variety of ways, including bank records, travel records, invoices, and items seized in search warrants.
This case was investigated by the Southern Ohio Joint Terrorism Task Force, a multi-agency operation that includes agents and officers from 15 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
The investigation was a joint investigation by agents and officers of the JTTF, specifically ICE Special Agents Bob Medellin and Rich Wilkens; and FBI Special Agents Steve Flowers and John Corbin.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dana M. Peters and Robyn J. Hahnert from the Southern District of Ohio and Sylvia Kaser, Trial Attorney with the Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section.

Triple Murder Suspect Arrested Along Ontario-Quebec Border

The Canada-wide manhunt for a suspect in three murders in southern Ontario ended in Portage-du-Fort.
An Ontario Provincial Police officer arrested 22-year-old Jesse Imeson last night without incident in a densely wooded area near the Ontario-Quebec border.
Police say the suspect was found by a homeowner inside a home in Portage-du-Fort, who called police.
Detective-Inspector Dave Cardwell tells CFRA News Imeson was armed at the time of his arrest. Police allegedly found two rifles on the suspect, but no shots were fired.
Imeson is in custody in Quebec. He will appear in a Quebec court in the morning and will then be transported to London for further questioning by Ontario Provincial Police and Windsor Police.
The manhunt moved to the Ottawa-Valley Monday night after a silver GMC Sierra pick-up truck belonging to William and Helene Regier was located in a densely wooded area near Renfrew.
Ontario Provincial Police won’t say how long the truck was there, or if police found anything inside.
Ontario Provincial Police and Quebec Provincial Police spent Tuesday searching along the Ontario-Quebec border.
A Canada-wide warrant on two counts of first-degree murder was issued for Imeson last week following the killings of the Regier’s in Mount Carmel, north of London.
Imeson also faces a charge of first degree murder in connection with the death of Windsor bartender Carlos Rivera.
