Bush Surprises Senate Aides With Unexpected Interruption of White House Meeting
Fox News ^ | 7/16/2007 | Major Garrett and Trish Turner

Posted on 07/16/2007 7:31:40 PM PDT by tobyhill

WASHINGTON — President Bush shocked Capitol Hill staffers and Republican leaders Monday when he crashed a meeting at the White House to deliver a blunt message that he wasn't backing down on Iraq and Republicans need to understand that.

"It was stunning," said one GOP aide who attended the meeting. "We couldn't believe he came in."

"We kept looking at each other, amazed he came in," said another Republican aide.

Bush was described as folksy, adamant and mildly profane as he interrupted the meeting between senior White House communications staffers Tony Snow and Ed Gillespie and GOP leaders. His message: the policy on Iraq isn't changing. He is not backing down and no one on Capitol Hill should be confused into thinking he is letting up.

The interruption precedes what is expected to be an all-nighter in the Senate on Tuesday, ordered by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as a way to protest GOP blocking tactics on moves to compel U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Reid said Iraq is the most important issue facing the United States and attempts to block legislation calling for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq will be met with a hardball response.

To everyone,

I understand immigration is an extremely large issue and an issue that doesn’t favor well for President Bush but I really believe that horse is dead for a long time to come so can we stop beating it on every thread?

Thank you,

The boss crashed a meeting in his own office building?

Since when is a President not welcome to insert himself into the agenda of any meeting that takes place at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

Now, if the meeting had been held at the Capitol building, and Bush cam bursting in on it, that may have signaled something totally different.

President Bush doesn’t have to worry anymore about reelection. So, he can do and say what he wants - in other words be the president.

I don’t know enough to say whether his Iraq policy is right or wrong. But I will say that I think the man is doing what he thinks is right, not what he thinks is popular. I’ve got to admire this.

It has fallen on his shoulders to decide whether to stay or go and the implictions that mens to the men and women of the armed forces and to the Iraqis and allies, etc. I’m so glad I don’t have to make that decision. I just pray that God will guide the president. Right or wrong, he has my respect.

I already hear crickets chirping at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Crashing a meeting led by Tony Snow and Ed Gillespie is small potatoes compared to what would be required to stop the illegal invasion of America across our southern border.

Kudos for President Bush. Dale Carnegie said a long time ago to make your decisions carefully, make them yours and be prepared to die by them. It appears that Dubya has done this. I firmly believe that the war in Iraq would be over by now if only the congress had given our military and its commander in chief a united backing. OSB’s play book said all along that the American people didn’t have the will to pay the price for victory. The American people do, but congress doesn’t. Particularly the democrats. Their rhetoric has forced them into a vested interest in defeat and they are so afraid that this surge is going to work that they are now trying to prevent it.

I have never before seen such a large group of cowards with a yellow streaks down their backs trying to convince the rest of us that it is caused by a liver disorder like this bunch is.

Our president is at war, our military is at war, but our congress and we Americans are not at war. We the people, other than the military families, have nothing invested in this war. We are not being asked to sacrifice anything and perhaps this is why so many fail to see the risk of losing to Al Queda in Iraq. I am old enough to remember WWII when every American was sacrificing for the war effort. I remember that almost every family had a relative at the front, and everyone was feeling the effect of rationing of rubber, sugar, gasoline, butter, bacon and even shoes.

We have become a nation of powder puffs. AQ knows it. Congress is failing to provide any leadership and support for the effort. If we don’t fight them and win in Iraq then where? The lame stream media never asks the Dems this question because they know they have no answer. If this bunch had been in congress during WWII we would all be speaking German or Japanese now.

May God help us all.

The WH communication dept is a mess .
Why do they wait for days after the Dems and the leftist media trashes his Iraqi plan ?
They need to out front attacking there enemies every day and evening .Why did Bush make a big deal and visit the Senate over the amnesty mess and not go it for Iraqi ?
The WH priorities and message is a huge disconnected train wreck.

If we lose in Iraq the wall may not matter. I too am disappointed in our president’s lack of effort to control illegal immigration. But at this critical juncture in the course of our human events, the wall is not the most critical exposure that we face.

I believe that every 18 year old American citizen should be given the option to volunteer for the military or be drafted into the border patrol. Then we wouldn’t need the steel and concrete wall. We would have a human wall, and an opportunity for every American youth to sacrifice for their country.

The fact that Congressional Republican staffers actually thought that President Bush’s “surprise visit” to this meeting was spontaneous is proof that they are not qualified to do their jobs and should be fired.

Staffers are supposed to be savvy about how Washington real politics works and this minor charade shouldn’t have fooled them at all. If they are impressed with such a basic tactic from a friendly President, how can they possibly advise their bosses on the Democrats tactics and strategies?
