Putin takes hard line on U.S. defense plans

Updated: 07/26/07 6:52 AM

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir V. Putin vowed Wednesday to strengthen Russia’s military capability and step up spying abroad in response to U.S. plans to build missile defense sites and to deploy troops in Eastern Europe.

“The situation in the world and internal political interests require the Foreign Intelligence Service to permanently increase its capabilities, primarily in the field of information and analytical support for the country’s leadership,” Putin said in a meeting with senior military and security officers in remarks that were posted on the Kremlin’s Web site. The Foreign Intelligence Service is a successor agency to the KGB.

Putin did not identify specific nations as targets, but officials in the United States and Britain have said recently that Moscow has intensified its spying in those countries.

Putin said U.S. plans to station troops in Eastern Europe and Washington’s intention to base missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic pose security challenges for Russia. Washington says the facilities are necessary to protect the United States and Europe from missiles launched by Iran or other rogue states.

They believe that life is a zero sum game and that the only way to advance is to take. ==

Aren’t we all? Name me any latino country which likes America?

They have only survived by systematic genocide and wholesale theft.==

Slander. Comminism theory which you imply was divised in Germany and England (check where Marx and Engels from) and was pushed on Russia by Civil war 1917-22.

Russia is still angry at having lost the cold war. They want to reverse their losses. ==

You so wrong here. Russia benefitted from USSR demise. Accually Russian leaders were aganist Soviet leaders in the end years of USSR era.

What they don’t realize is that their rabid behavior will only earn them another humiliating defeat at our hands.==

Rabid behaivior is to provoke new Russia into the new Cold war. We all will “cry blood tears” later because of those irresponsible provokateers of today.

Don’t you look on America lately? Who deploys the new weaponry and bases in Europe? America provokes Russia. Russia should answer.

I don't think we are doing anything to provoke Russia, and quite frankly, it's because nobody cares about Russia anymore. Perhaps that's why they are behaving like children.

Is dictator Putin planning for war by the end of 2007 - or sooner?

Russia to deploy S-400 air defense systems around Moscow Aug.

Pushed on Russia by a civil war? You're not making any sense now. A "civil war", by definition, is a conflict fought by the factions of the same country. So, communism wasn't "pushed on" Russia, but came from within.

Get your head out of the sand, the missile shield is to protect Europe from Iran - not Russia.

RusIvan is a revisionist who wants us to believe there were no Russians in Moscow in the 20’s and 30’s.

You might want to clue Cheka Putin in to this fact. He seems to think it was a catastrophe that caused Russians worse pain even than 80 years of communism.

I accidentally sent a reply to RusIvan's post as private, here's his reply: Pushed on Russia by a civil war? You’re not making any sense now. A “civil war”, by definition, is a conflict fought by the factions of the same country.== Th ecountry was Russian Empire. The factions - the multinational Bolshevicks who were the mostly nonrussian citizens of RE. Opposite side: the nationalistic Russians and other anti-bolshevicks of the different nationalities of Empire..

Russians have got to be a weak bunch if they couldn't defeat this supposed group of "nonrussian citizens of RE". Besides, these people being citizens of the country have every right to be active in the state they live in. It were the russian tzars who annexed the lands were these non russian lived (ukraine, georgia, etc.).

“It were the russian tzars who annexed the lands were these non russian lived (ukraine, georgia, etc.).”

Good post but Ukrainians did not have a significant presence within the Bolshevic movement. They were fighting the Bolshevics and the White Russians simultaneously.
