Thank you, all are safe here and I’m glad you are too.

I can’t post from work but I can lurk and every once in a while I read something that I just have to respond to later.

We are good people. We get painted with the Mondale beat Reagan here brush but he was from here, not surprising.

The thing I like best about the liberals I know here is that you can argue with them and discuss stuff with them and it doesn’t get ugly. It’s actually kind of fun.

Again, I’m glad you and yours are well. Take care!

Of course that would change everything. However, I know what condition many bridges are in, so I am betting it was natural neglect.

"I can't imagine the expansion assembly failing all at once."

Right. The E side broke loose first. I think within one second after the intial break the west side went.

I can't make out most of these still pics, because the resolution's so low. I looked for the bearing plates, but couldn't positively ID them. The stills on this page don't indicate much corrosion. There's just some shots that show rust where the king post rests on the pylon and rust stains dripping down from above on that same post. MAybe you can make things out from the stills on that page, because your familiar with it. The SW king post appears to be intact, and on the ground. It appears to have broke free from the road bed.

I couldn't make out anything under the bridge before the fall. There's a curious fog under the brige where each of the members of the truss and the posts between them meet the road bed. There's some kind of lateral support bracket at those locations. If that's a fog there, and not just camera effects, the truss, at least on the east side, appears to have sheared longitudinally from the road bed.

"This had to be a catostrophic underpinning/super-structure failure. Either they chipped away too much concrete around the anchor bolts at the piers, or they created a point load in the wrong place."

I don't think they were working on the peirs yet. There just seems to have been cutouts in the concrete on the one side where traffic was one lane. That from the MNDOT camera. It showed them and some equipment parked along the other side. that equipment could weight much. I think it was just and air compressor and a ~1000gal water truck. I think one of the truss members was already essentially failed and the roadbed itself(the pins at the bearing plates) was allowing it to stand a bit longer. Is it possible the foreman, or any of the workerswould note an odd opening at the expansionjoint for this weather?

Fortunately, her numbers suck. She only attracts those so far gone, that there is no chance of ever reaching/turning them.

Fortunately she doesn't have the freewheeling that the likes of Dan Rather had because the Internet and other alternative outlets have stifled the monopoly that the ABC networks used to have.

Their numbers in the ratings are falling because of it.

Perhaps the "fairness doctrine" should be reenacted? /sarc

I am not sure but I think I saw two front discharge concrete mixers on one of the fallen roadways, I drive a concrete mixer that fully loaded is near 69.000 lbs and those type of mixers can weigh much more.Looking at the videos its just a bit strange how it fell, more like a controlled demolition. I would ask some of those demolition experts if it could be done without using explosives.

I see the Democrats are doing their darnedest to blame Bush for the bridge collapse, maybe Rush will remind them that they spent the money on the “Bridge to Nowhere” in Alaska instead of the bridge to somewhere in Minnesota.

They talked about the Silver Bridge as an historical reference a lot today on the various national news channels.

CNN talked about it several times. Infact CNN’s Chad Myers (who used to work at Channel 6 in Columbus) went into detail comparing the two. FOX actully showed pictures from the Silver Bridge collapse.

The Silver Bridge collapse changed the way bridges were created in the United States. After Dec 15 1967, new bridges were no longer non redundant. Which means if a main connection broke, the rest of the bridge would no longer fail with newer designs.

Problem is. The Minnesota bridge was created just months before the Silver Bridge collapsed. Thus like with the Silver Bridge, if the main link broke, there was a DOMINO effect.

The two bridge collapses will always be linked based on this alone.

Yeah, locally, the Gov is being blamed for this because he vetoed a gasoline tax, this year.

As if the gas tax money was going to be used to fix bridges. It is well known that the Dems were going to buy more choo-choo trains with that money.....

I didn’t catch Soucheray today. I’ve been listening mostly to 100.3 lately. But at any rate, structural deficiency is an unfortunate term that they use in the bridge rating. They really need to revisit that and possibly come up with a more friendly lay-person term.

The bridge inspection by MnDOT would have noted any significant casson erosion.

One lesson that has to be learned from past experiences is that erosion is not a linear-rate process. Unfortunately, many engineers have not learned that simple geologic fact, from channel erosion to beach loss.

That being said, I don't think there's much evidence that caisson/pier failure was involved in this case, and I certainly don't know the qualifications of the MnDOT inspectors.

"I am not sure but I think I saw two front discharge concrete mixers on one of the fallen roadways, "

That shouldn't be a problem, even if they were off to the side, because that would be where 18 wheelers of the same weight would pass in line regularly.

"Looking at the videos its just a bit strange how it fell, more like a controlled demolition. I would ask some of those demolition experts if it could be done without using explosives.

One of the truss members, or connection, around the SE pier failed. That caused the roadbed to tilt down, drop, pop at all the bearing points, and drop straight down. The rest of the road bed followed as a rigid sheet (road bed + superstructure, straight down). I can't find the SE king post in the rubble. The SW one tiddly winked out and off it's pile intact. You could ID different truss members, or supports on the SE side which are critical. What's important though was for someone to do that before this happened and recognize that something was wrong in that area. The steel there was already failing and had strained to a point, that the bearings in the expansion joint were taking up unnatural stress. That's why a normal load triggered a catastrophe.

As far as a man made "crack" goes, the investigators that have the broken pieces in hand and can see how it all fell, could spot that right away. They probably already know why the bridge fell. They won't release that until they reconstruct the whole thing on paper, instead of envelopes and go over it a few times.

Exactly... regardless of names or route numbers, the shame is that there are many existing bridges that aren't built how they would be if they were created today.
