Posted on 08/01/2007 4:28:27 PM PDT by ButThreeLeftsDo
Just turned on the news. 35W bridge collapsed in the Mississippi River. Cars, trucks, semis.....
Fires burning, tanker trucks, at least one school bus, more than ten cars......
Just now breaking.......
I don’t care much for Shep- but he seems to be doing pretty well with this- it’s an unbelievable scene to be covering..whether remotely or on location.
Here’s the link to KARE 11:
Guy just said he saw Homeland Security guys pull up while there.
Called my wife on her cell here in Milwaukee. She is at our church’s Wednesday evening prayer meeting. Prayers are being lifted up!
FOR BRIDGE COLLAPSE VICTIMS,FAMILIES AND RESPONDERS!
MAY THE LORD KEEP THEM ALL IN HIS HANDS!
No, but I fear for the guy they keep talking about with the jackhammer.
The first thing hubby said was “Look at the tankers and the cement truck! All that weight!”
Someone on the bridge said it was bumper to bumper traffic, and he was going to the Twins game!
I am just stunned.
Not terrorism. It’s the “heat wave.” Global warming. Bush’s fault.
A steel member in a structure is typically designed to accommodate 40% more than its anticipated "dead" load and 70% more than its anticipated "live" load.

“you were expecting Bill to start his show with his apology to FR?”
No, just OReilly’s ‘soft’ news.
Shep’s voice has lost the drama that he was emoting earlier.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Workers have been repairing the 40-year-old bridges surface as part of improvements along that stretch of the interstate.”
hep is doing great. This is a major catastrophe, with no sensible explanation. Thirty-year-old bridges do not just collapse in a non-earthquake zone.
Terroists? We shall see.
And they do these things in threes.
Don’t go over the GW or Brooklyn Bridges tonight or tomorrow!
I suppose its possible one of the concrete spans over the land collapsed and somehow pulled down the main river span.
There was some minor cracking in the structural steel in an inspection in 2006!!!!!
Where are the flames coming from?
Hey...BOR! I got your right-wing hate site...right...here!
I am in the Steel design and construction business. And I can tell you that the various loads that you mentioned, are the very ones that are always taken in consideration when designing a bridge. In fact, in steel construction, there is so much over designing that goes on, that it really takes something unforseen to bring a structure down (eg. earthquake, barge hit, etc.) Im not saying that it could not be a design failure but that is usually not the case. Also, a fourty year old bridge is not that old. But I am sure the various engineers of record will pour over the design dwgs, to see where the failure might have occured. Also if this bridge was under construction, you can be that before the project took place, a team of civil engineers were all over it to make sure it could structurally take the construction project.
Yeah. I hope someone is looking over that dam
that was a report from 2005.
FOX NEWS is doing the best they can.
How else can you present something so horrific ?
Didn't you say the same thing about the "car fire" at the airport in Glasgow?

Jesus wept. Some of the cars are on fire. God help those people.
Channel 5 says that a 2006 DOT report says that there was cracking in the steel beams holding up the bridge.
This is awful!!!
What about the poor guy in the white car? How does he get out? (Set the parking brake?)
I guess you missed the Mianus River bridge collapse on I-95 in Connecticut some years ago, and the Schoharie Creek bridge up on the New York State Thruway a few years later.
Reporter on Fox said it is worse than San Francisco’s Quake in ‘89.
A sleeper cell could have pulled it off with shaped charges planted by a small boat.
The sound of the detonation would almost go unnoticed in the noise of the collapse.
2006 inspection reported minor structural fatigue on the main beams. Per Channel 5.
At this point, it could be an engineering failure or it could be terrorism, or maybe something else. It's way to early to rule out any causes.
Yep. More vehicles going up in flames.
Sounds like May 2006 there was an inspection showing cracking in the structure. Fire burning again.
I agree about terrorism. People on the bridge reported hearing jackhammer-like sounds before the collapse. Multiple explosions of charges under the supports? Even earthquakes don’t cause this much damage all at once.
“No, but I fear for the guy they keep talking about with the jackhammer.”
If one jackhammer could do that...there’s a bigger problem than the jackhammer.
The Twins game has now started. I wondered if it would be called off or delayed.
KSTP news obtained a copy of a MNDOT inspection report that said structural members at the approaches showed significant fatigue.
That bridge was up high..
Baseball game to go on. Guess they would rather keep people in one place rather than sending 10’s of thousands people back onto the road.
there are some here that feel better slinging that crap when a horrible tragedy is unfolding. Not the time and the place.
Say what? worse what?
With that said, they are back on the story.
Too soon, Ali.
