Posted on 08/01/2007 4:28:27 PM PDT by ButThreeLeftsDo
Just turned on the news. 35W bridge collapsed in the Mississippi River. Cars, trucks, semis.....
Fires burning, tanker trucks, at least one school bus, more than ten cars......
Just now breaking.......
Could have BEEN the stop and go traffic, kind of like marching over a bridge. Route step Hua.
Homeland UN-Security is saying this is not a terrorist act...just like they said New Orleans was not going underwater...
Mianus went down at 4 am
Can you zoom out a bit? I can’t get my bearings that way. I think I know where it is but...
No denying it’s horrific, but I would not want to rely on Shep in an emergency.
All Call Minneapolis and surrounding counties.
Looks like a lot of damage...
They said the bridge was under construction but their was a TRUCK burning underneath the bridge??!!!
Now they are saying a heat wave?
Come on?! Bridges just don’t fall down! This could be terrorism.
I can’t believe the pictures I am seeing on TV!
I also think Shep is doing a great job reporting.
Channel 9 says that all Mpls fire/rescue are asked to report to their respective fire stations.
Glenn Taylor - the owner of the Timbewolves was supposed to have a presser for the recent trade. Cancelled by Taylor. He broke down because his daughter was involved in the collapse. He thinks she’s okay.
I’m sorry, but Shep was going apoplectic about the school bus after we all spent 10 minutes looking right at it. At the very least, someone in the control room should have told him.
“Reporter on Fox said it is worse than San Franciscos Quake in 89.”
Light traffic. Everyone watching the SF Oakland world series game.
I don’t see how they can know this..It’s way too soon...
Hubby made me turn over to CNN as Shep was making him climb the walls.
Light rail sux.
Eyewitness on the bridge saw workers using jackhammers, saw collapse beginning, and “just gunned it” to escape. -—Fox News report of 911 call
but either mistakes in design OR improper construction OR improper materials OR unaccounted corrosion/lack of proper maintenance can lead to a failure.
My guess would be improper materials or corrosion/lack of maintenance.
In the 1980’s (early) - a 30 - 40 year old bridge span in Connecticut, part of I-95, fell into a river - and IIRC - it was poor maintenance (or marginal design combined with poor maintenance) that lead to the failure.
I remember that like it was yesterday.
WOW! then I’m really suprised that a report less than a year ago on structural fatigue, would still allow for a construction project to go forward without further shoring. Of course, there may have been extra shoring but that could have failed. If you hear anything else on this please post it.
Local station has reported that Homeland Security has arrived. hmmmmmm
Shep now saying “people in the water”. Anyone know what the water temp is? Even if people can stay afloat, hypothermia can set in really fast. This is horrific - prayers for all those affected.
Thank you coder2.
Can I have the url for channel 5 and I’ll post the updates.
And you know this how?
I’m surprised O’reilly didn’t want his time
It also was sitting in a non-earthquake zone and went down “for no reason,” as per the previous poster’s suggestion that things like this never happen.
Probably the sound of steel beams and connections ripping apart.
He said he has been hearing that this bridge disaster is similar to the scenes we saw of the bridge collapse during the 1989 Quake in the Bay Area. His response was “I was there, this is worse.”
They’re a piece of work, aren’t they?
It doesn't look like there is any sign of an explosion and that is about the only way a terrorist could do this. I looks to me like structural failure.
praying with you.
May the LORD strengthen the hands of the rescue workers, shine his light to reveal those in need and comfort all concerned.
We just contacted my aunt who lives near Minneapolis. She has already gotten in touch with all of our relatives up there and they are all safe.
They’ve closed the dam to control the current.
You got a web scanner feed URL?
Dont go over the GW or Brooklyn Bridges tonight or tomorrow!
Praying and gasping at the extent of this disaster.
TG my granddaughter who goes to University there is at home this summer!
Prayers up for all those who have relatives and friends who may have been on that bridge.
TG the school bus stayed intact and all the kids got off with just bumps and cuts.
FNC: Department of Homeland Security says this does not appear to be an act of terrorism.
Lets get this straight, a jackhammer would not cause a bridge to collapse.
The Dept of Homeland security just said it was not.
What crap they already know that?
40 year old bridges in high-salt areas can, if not properly maintained and inspected.
The US 51 bridge that collapsed in Tennessee was only about 10 years older, and was in an area where much less salt would have been used on the roadway, although that collapse was blamed not on corrosion, but on the effect of the river on the piers.
Light traffic on the bridge. Not so light on the Cypress Structure freeway that collapsed. That’s where the most fatalities happened.
Can’t get ahold of my SIL who lives just outside Minneapolis. She works at one of the hospitals there. Calls not going thru.
Prayers for everyone involved!!
Channel 9 says that Homeland Security has issued a statement saying that they do not believe the bridge collapse to be terror-related. But they are investigating the situation.
Here you go TerrierGal...The Dome is clearly shown...HOPE This helps...
I dont think there are any....the minneapolis people said there arent any online...
full mobilization from the surrounding counties
