Posted on 08/01/2007 4:28:27 PM PDT by ButThreeLeftsDo
Just turned on the news. 35W bridge collapsed in the Mississippi River. Cars, trucks, semis.....
Fires burning, tanker trucks, at least one school bus, more than ten cars......
Just now breaking.......
Keith Olbermann is also doing an excellent job. He's a very articulate and quite an intelligent man. So sad he's politically deranged.
How do you know its from 2005??????
People are always a little excited when things like this happen.
Also, whenever there is a catastrophic failure there are lots of sounds and small events, some of which look like explosions. Remember all the people who swore they heard explosions with the World Trade? As things give, they “bang” - my guess is it is easy to confuse with an explosion.
No need to jump to conclusions here. Buildings and bridges are not new to sudden, catastrophic failure. This is just as easily an engineering problem.
I would expect that when the spans came down, the air under them had to be ‘blown out’ as the concrete spans fell...this might give the appearance of smoke etc. as the air rushed out from underneath the collapsing segments.
If I remember my physics correctly, an object will fall and accellerate at 9.8meters/sec2. So, if the bridge was 65 feet up it would take approx 2-2.5seconds to fall that distance so the speed at impact would be 100feet/second(?) so the air would have been blowing out pretty good, moving all sorts of dust and trash..
Just my really rough calcs...
Fox is mentioning WCCO now and that they (WCCO) are reporting at least one fatality.
“Who says something like that?”
I’ve done live television where you are reporting on something as it’s happening and you have to think on your feet where things are changing right before your eyes.
You’ve got a producer talking in your ear telling you to take the feed from somewhere...wrap up because a break i coming up...feeding you updated info...pluse you’ve got assistants constantly handing you script to read and you’re trying to watch the monitor.
And you’re doing ALL of this at once.
Mis-steps and mis-phrased words happen.
I’m not defending Shep here...I’m just trying to give folks who don’t know an idea of the organized chaos going on that you don’t see.
My live reporting was the Ford Funeral...tame by comparison...I’d be pulling my hair out on this one.
Someone else said that they are probably better off there than trying to get home in this mess. If they called the game they’d have a lot more people in the way and in traffic.
It may have been intentional to keep the game on.
If you look at the damage, parts of the bridge pivoted up as the center span collapsed down. That would account for the reports of debris flying up.
Channel 5’s weather guy saw that severe thunderstorms will be moving into the area of the bridge collapse within a half hour or so.
It’s awful. They said on TV that a lot of people were heading to the Twins game around that time.
Calm down Dutch Tulip. We don’t know that.
Sometimes in very hot weather here the highway surface will buckle upwards, making a ridge in the road.
One woman said she saw big black smoke and the a loud bang. Maybe construction, but it sure is suspicious to me.
How about divers underwater installing charges after dark and then blowing things up remotely?

“I-35W Bridge Collapse Into Mississippi River”
Slideshow: I-35W Bridge Collapse
ARTICLE SNIIPPET: “A maintenance project began about nine months ago repairing potholes and other concrete on the bridge. According to a spokesperson from the Mn-DOT, there was no work on the actual structure under the bridge.”
“35W Bridge near University Avenue Collapses”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “HCMC is in full emergency mode.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “That motorist told Joe Fryer that there was shaking from jack hammer and then the bridge just dropped.”
I just noticed that train tracks go under the bridge on one side.
Usually, it’s not one single thing. As I said, the larger than normal weight plus metal fatigue plus corrosion. Any way just a guess.
this is a huge disaster!!!!!!!!!
She also said that objects were blowing upward and then there was downward movement.
It’s his automatic reply nowdays..not terrorism even before they check it out...
I'm not sure, but I think a partial collapse on a Milwaukee bridge about 10 years ago was due to faulty materials. Ultimately they had to remove large sections of the bridge with explosives and rebuild.
Praying for all involved. Even those who are rescued will have a lot to deal with.
Thanks for the prayer *PING*.
MSNBC reports “daytime piledriving” scheduled for the area this week.
Posting from that mosque in Amsterdam, are you?
Don’t know if it has been posted b4, but Fox is streaming here:
Getting dark and difficult to see what is happening.
I still say if the DHS had been in opeation at that point, they would have found a reason to discount terrorism.
If you’re talking about the Cedar Ave bridge over the Minnesota River in Bloomington....no.
not the heat melting steel, BUT...the heat causes steel and concrete to expand quite a bit...it’s possible the expansion joint expanded and slipped off a cross member and the rest came down like dominoes...
Seems they’ve been resurfacing etc. so maybe some of the expansion joints were wide open??
Two things. First, when a steel reinforced concrete fails catastrophically, there is an incredible amount of stored internal energy to release and so it will appear to explode - because it does. It was strained to the point that it could not take any more - by definition.
Second. If there were emplaced explosives of the quantity required for demolition of this sort, it would immediately be detectable. In fact you could smell it anywhere in the vicinity, without any difficulty whatsoever. Even well placed shaped demolition charges would be easily sniffed out, and bystanders would be under no illusions about what they were smelling.
They did NOT say it wasn’t terrorism. They said they will investigate, but they have no reason to think it was terrorism — I assume no “chatter” about something like this.
“Also, whenever there is a catastrophic failure there are lots of sounds and small events, some of which look like explosions.”
Yes, in fact many times in a bldg. when the field bolt connections are slip critical, and they slip into a bearing condition, which causes a very loud bang. Big steel structures make very loud noises when they fail.
Yeah, I saw that Blackhawk fly by
Crowd control. I guess we should be flattered that they fear us more than al qaeda.
I’ll try MS-NBC...Shep is making me crazy.
Did you hear the guy say a sheriffs car was blocking a hole that had the road down to one lane?
“he saw the long span bend and shatter in the center and give way”
It could be that the road deck that was being replaced HAD BECOME critical in holding the bridge together. If rust or failure elsewhere shifted the loading factors and the deck took up the slack...then they take apart the deck to replace it. Bam, it comes down.
I think that's highly likely.
Brilliant! observation, Shep. Any men hurt?
Ahhh...other Cedar Ave bridge....Yes.
No. But it does expand as the temperature rises, which could cause parts of the structure to buckle unless proper expansion joints are incorporated in the design.
Concrete buckles at 90 degrees? I’m no expert, but I do not believe the a 90 degree day made a steel and reinforced concrete bridge fall down. I’ll buy rust, faulty construction, bad materials and any number of reasons, but a hot day?
1 dead per Cnn, Paula Zahn
DHS being non-committal as to what caused collapse.
“then you would see jumping/cheering”
Oh no, witness saying she helped pull people out of cars and she saw many deceased.
Yes Yes absolutely
Dont know if it has been posted b4, but Fox is streaming here:
Why does it say “rebroadcast of 9-11-01 coverage at the top?
