O'Reilly Factor Partial Transcript of the interview with Kristinn on 7-31-07

Transcript From the July 31 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:

"From the July 31 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:

O'REILLY: In the "Impact" segment tonight, as we've been reporting, the hate website Daily Kos has intimidated the Democratic presidential candidates with the exception of Senator Biden. So they are speaking at the Kos convention this coming weekend. There's no question that the most vile stuff imaginable is posted on this hate site and others like it.

Now, some on the left justify the garbage by pointing to right-wing websites like FreeRepublic.com, whose postings can get nasty as well.

With us now in the studio -- former Democratic Congressman Harold Ford Jr., now a Fox News analyst, and from Washington, Kristinn Taylor, a spokesperson for the Free Republic.

Mr. Taylor, I have to say, you know, we pulled a bunch of stuff off your website today and it's pretty vile; it's pretty awful. You've got some pretty sick people posting -- a couple of examples: "Homosexuals are dogs." "I hate blacks." "Hillary Clinton should be assassinated." "A stray bullet should kill her" -- and on and on and on.

TAYLOR: Well, Bill, all those things --

O'REILLY: You know, this is all on your website today.

TAYLOR: Well, all those things that you said violate our posting guidelines, and if we find them, we will remove them. That's not what we're about.

O'REILLY: What do you mean, if we find them?

TAYLOR: If we find them. We --

O'REILLY: This is what I don't understand. I found them, and it wasn't hard. And I went back and we did a trace just on me and some of the stuff that has been posted about me on your website, and it's just unbelievable. But when you say, "if we find them," shouldn't there be somebody there supervising this website?

TAYLOR: We do have volunteer moderators.

O'REILLY: Volunteer.

TAYLOR: However, now, there are thousands upon thousands of comments that are posted to the site every day. We don't exercise prior restraint. We rely on the good sense of people that are posting there, and 99 percent of them are good people who stay within our guidelines.

O'REILLY: OK.

TAYLOR: You also have people that come on the site deliberately to post things to make the site look bad.

O'REILLY: That's right.

TAYLOR: We used to have people that would post hardcore pornography pictures.

O'REILLY: But here -- let me give you -- let me give you some advice. That's the same argument that the left-wing Nazi hate sites make -- that it's not really them; it's others. Don't you have an obligation to the country to have not volunteers, but to have a professional person sit there and enforce some kind of standards for your website?

TAYLOR: It costs money, Bill. It costs money. Free Republic operates on donations.

O'REILLY: You got a lot people -- you know what? I bet you if you asked for donations for that, you would be able -- because as you said, most people are good people who come in. They would give you money so that they wouldn't have to be besmirched by these sick people. And they're sick.

But you're right, a lot of it's planted. And a lot of it is just crazy people who are surfing. But I believe you have an obligation, Mr. Taylor, to clean this thing up. It doesn't do you any good, because that's what they seize on.

TAYLOR: We do. I agree with you, Bill, and whenever we find it -- if I find it -- I report it to our moderators and they take care of it.

O'REILLY: All right. Well, you should do a better job because just today this is vile, hateful stuff.

Now, Harold Ford Jr. was the subject of some of this when you ran the last time around. But I have to say, and this is absolutely my opinion, I looked at Free Republic and I looked at Daily Kos, and Daily Kos is far worse. They revel in this kind of stuff.

The cartoon last night we showed of President Bush and Joseph Lieberman -- way beyond anything of free speech. It's hate. It's hate.

Now, you as an African-American, and you as somebody who's been subjected to hate, I mean, why aren't the Democrats distancing themselves from this?

FORD: Well, let me be clear. I'm not here to represent Daily Kos or Free Republic. I'm a believer and a supporter of free speech.

Nonetheless, there comes a time in political debate when one would hope it would be elevated to discussing the big, big issues. I'm the chair of a group called the Democratic Leadership Council. We've been subjected to untrue and awful and malicious things by a number of different websites.

We just continue to move forward and trek ahead. I do think that there's a lot to be said for providing resources and people who support these sites, the good people who may believe in -- what I don't understand is what Free Republic, frankly, believes in, because if you feel comfortable enough to post "I hate blacks" on a website -- you don't find people posting that on a Fox News website. So, there must --

O'REILLY: No, you don't, because we have standards. And that's what I told Mr. Taylor, that he's got to be more vigilant and hire somebody professionally to regulate it......"

What O'Reilly said relative to the links provided by his producer are not mere mischaracterizations, they are out and out lies. Nothing in the bold was an accurate description of the posts here.

O'Reilly Factor Provides Free Republic Offending Comments Links

I received an e-mail today from the Fox News producer who booked me for the O'Reilly Factor last night. The links have been forwarded to Jim Robinson for review.

Jim asked me to start a thread with the links so that Freepers, and everyone else, could see for themselves what the fuss is about.

The Hillary Clinton stray bullet assassination comment was a very bad joke comment that someone posted two days ago. It was flagged last night after the O'Reilly Factor broadcast and was removed by a moderator. It is available for the time being in Google cache:

To: Virginia Ridgerunner I like my scenario better:

After eight years of the economy faltering, interest rates are 19%, 900,000 people are dead in Iraq since we left, taxes have gone up by 60% and Chile, Bolivia and Columbia are now Communist regimes, a stray bullet at a NARAL rally catches President Clinton and kills her.

As they take away Cindy Sheehan she screams why did she have to remove the troops? We were winning.

The next day the dow goes up 2000 points and closes at 2150.

Don't even bother trying to defend that one. Assassination jokes have no place on Free Republic. Yes, Cindy Sheehan has written of her fantasizies about killing President Bush--and she's not joking, but that's her problem. We're better than that.

The "homosexuals are dogs" comment is taken out of context. The actual quote is "Homosexuals are the modern day dogs in the manger." That was in reference to an article about proprieters in the U.K. not being allowed to deny hotel accomodations to homosexual couples on account of religious belief.

The American Heritage online dictionary gives this description for the phrase: dog in the manger, NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. dogs in the manger. One who prevents others from enjoying what one has no use for oneself. ETYMOLOGY: From a fable in which a dog prevented an ox from eating hay he did not want himself.

That comment was posted two days ago and has also been removed by the moderators. It is available for now in Google cache.

The "I hate blacks" comment was nowhere to be found in the other threads referenced.

The threads are about crime in the black community, gangsta culture and Jesse Jackson. Two of the threads are in the Smoky Backroom.

There is no reason to sugar coat what O'Reilly did on 7-31-07. If the producer sent the information that O'Reilly based his comments on to Kristinn, he has to be lying. Look at the bold above on the transcript above. He claims he found them. If he did and the links the producers gave Kristinn are it, anybody can see the grossly dishonest way they were used. The most serious ,"I hate Blacks" comment is NOWHERE to be found on the links and the comment was used TWICE on the program.

Tonight in answering his viewer mail he makes the a smarmy comment, "“Free Republic Needs a full time monitor.” or words to that effect." After sandbagging Kristinn and taking some cheap shots at FR to provide the illusion that he is "fair and balanced", he wants to move on. I don't think so.

O'Reilly is just angry that many at Free Republic are not in complete worship of him as some conservative deity. The things he says he found, I've never seen.

The closest thing to "hate" found on FR might be our unbending condemnation of the Islamic push to rule the world.

If O'Reilly wants to take up the Islamic side and bash us, well then he has lost all credibility. I know Geraldo is not happy with us at all over illegals.

O’Reilly blew it! He needs to sincerely apologize at the very least. I seem to remember a similar situation here in Fresno when a city-sponsored group called FR a “hate group” on city stationary. There was a big ruckus and Jim Robinson won.

O'Reilly just slammed us again in his letters section. I turned it over a couple of minutes early to watch Hannity & Colmes.

Someone wrote in that 100% of the bad postings were plants and BOR said there is no way to know that, but Free Republic needs a full time monitor which it doesn't have today.

It is clear to me that he got his gigantic little ego bruised and now he wants to make us pay! I truly believe he is positioning himself in a good light for the Senate hearings on the new "Fairness Doctrine" because he feels that Empress Hillary will become President.

We have a perfect chance to prove the Cable Channel Personality corollary to the unified idiom of the Peter Principle.

The fact of the matter is that Bill O’Reilly is a big mouthed showman who sets up these situations to get some sparks and he plays gotcha-games with the guests he brings on his show, and he hides behind the whole ‘no spin zone’ BS (while he is madly spinning his own views), and anyone who disagrees with him, is labeled a ‘bloviator’ or worse.

What this really tells us is that O’Reilly is running out of tricks, and he’s trying to gin up some new controversies to keep his numbers up there.

And the bottom line?

Bill O’Reilly has begun the process of being ‘Ratherized’ right here on FR, because he is just as guilty of spewing hate, lies and trying to incite murder (Matt Drudge) as any hatemonger out there.

O’Reilly has met the enemy, and it’s the same face he sees in the mirror every morning.

If I were on with Bill I would've asked to see the posts in question and not allow him to ambush me with them. That would've taken the air out of his charges right there. Anti-Bubba's thread demonstrates that his comparison of hate speech between the Daily Kos and freerepublic are disingenuous.

Bill does the same thing to Ann Coulter. He condemns left wing hate speech, but then says the right has it's own haters, too. Equating Ann Coulter with the crazies on the left. Ann is a polarizing writer, but that doesn't make her a hater.

To his credit, O’Reilly noted that the amount of controversial content at FreeRepublic pales in comparison to that which appears on a near-daily basis at DailyKos. O'Reilly went on to add that they (at the Kos) seem to revel in hate.

Still, Bill O'Reilly uses his position as a national figure in a way that I'm thankful for. He goes after judges who are lenient on child abusers, he draws attention to the borders, he takes on the liberal media while he himself is a liberal pinhead. It is intellectual laziness to equate Ann Coulter with the hate on the left just as it is to equate freerepublic with the Daily Kos. Perhaps, it comes naturally if you're a Independent Kool-Aid drinker?

The closest thing to "hate" found on FR might be our unbending condemnation of the Islamic push to rule the world.

Any thread in which the topic is Hillary or Cindy Sheehan, for example, is not exactly a friendly thing to see. I don't even click on such anymore because all those threads contain are personal attacks, no debate of the issues. Most of the personal attacks on Hillary are of a joking nature ... no more or less than Letterman or Leno do every night.

That said ... we all know that FR is not a 'hate' site and that O'Reilly has absolutely no clue when he opines on this subject and he is apparently not open-minded enough to learn about FR when he has the chance. That is his loss. But he will use everything ugly that is said about him on this site to further his argument.

Kristinn was being nice and he got jumped. I Don't think O'Reilly was particularly mad at FR. He was cavalierly using the segment with Kristinn to look "Fair and Balanced" so he could continue his attacks on Kos.

He has to learn that crap can go both ways and he does not get a free shot at us on National Television!

Bill O'Reilly is not an intelligent man.  He is a clever man.

You can't win a pissing contest with a clever man when he controls the playing field because he will change the rules.  You can't win a pissing contest with an intelligent man because he won't unzip his pants if he knows he's going to lose.

We shouldn't get into a tizzy over Bill because he will simply mischaracterize and/or lie to make his point.  That's the name of his game.

Someone like Dennis Prager - a thinking man - wouldn't even have breached this subject because he knows that the exceptions don't make the rule.

The worst we could do to Bill is ignore him for the prat that he is.

"Ann is a polarizing writer,..."

Nonsense! Ann writes things that once read are clearly simple truths. She has a gift.

Her critics such as O'Reilly in this case, are actually polarizing readers.

I anxiously await her next book which I will devour in a day or so as I did her other works.

Here is a post I made from yesterday. It’s about the blacks comment. I saw it and then I saw it disappear and the poster got booted...in under two minutes. It was up there and I was shocked to read it, and then poof! he and it were gone. I’d say that’s pretty good moderating on the part of the Mod who banned that poster. It only proves that this volunteer system works. If anything, BOR’s statement about a full-time, paid moderator smacks of nanny state thinking. Anyway, it did happen and it is a good thing for us that it did. Just doesn’t look like it right now...!!
____________________________________________________________

Dear Volunteer Moderator:
Thank you for your service to Free Republic, maybe you don’t hear that very often!

You can go back to the earliest Michael Vick threads (sorry, I don’t know which one) and one poster made a horrible statement about black people. Two posts down, he was thrown off. I was pretty impressed with the speed of the banning, and thought that the “mods” were really on their game that day. May I suggest that you look over your lists of banees and find that one as the AdMod was pretty frank and straight up in his remarks. Then you should take all banned posts, all response times, and all AdMod remarks and send them to Bad Boyfriend Bill. Good Luck to you and all the great people here who work to make Free Republic the most excellent and responsible site on the Web.

**He goes after judges who are lenient on child abusers**

I wouldn’t take his judgement on judges as certain any more. I live in Lawrence County Missouri and about a year or so ago he stated a local judge was lenient about some case. This is a county as Republican and Conservative as any in Missouri. There was not a bit of outrage here locally about the judge because for the most part he was well respected and the locals knew more about the case than the sloppy research O’Reilly did.

Take everything Bill O’Reilly says with a big grain of salt

NO, we had a significant influence on bringing down Dan Rather for lying and fabrication, O'Reilly, if he won't apologize, deserves the same treatment.

I suggest we all start mailing him copies of Aesop's Fables for starters, and start referring to him as "Dog in the Manger O'Reiily", or "DITM O'Reilly", it might just stick.

I can’t believe anyone is surprised. I also can’t believe he has the top rated show. Then again, yes I can. Looking at Fox’s ratings, you notice the more idiotic a show is, the better the ratings. Their only halfway decent show is Brit’s show, which is consistently the worst rated Fox show. The other shows—Factor, H/C, Greta, Shep? Unwatchable. A complete waste of precious time.

I hate to say it, but I was listening to Sheppard Smith news hour a few days ago, and I actually laughed at the way he was reporting the news. He is a joke. The news is unwatchable. What can you say in a week where two News Helicopters collide killing all on board ..while chasing a car?

Yeah, BOR thought so too. But apparently the milkman’s propensity for lying was genetic.

Oh man, you are in trouble!

You just called O’Reilly a “Limey.”

Now that will make the Irishman mad!

Plus that name calling bolsters O’Reilly’s argument

I’ve got more Irish in me that BOR does, and I sure don’t appreciate your remarks but you can right ahead and say what you want. Isn’t this the entire point of this storm? Besides, you need to leave room for the Catholic bashers!

While it is true that a few short years ago I watched often. BOR has become unwatchable to me and it is a credibility issue. It started with his radio show and the token women he has on. When he began to his cut them off just as he might start to let them talk. Then he did his usual cutting off of people I didn't like and that started to bother me. Then I began to disagree with a few of his opinions when he started to say, "Hey I am Mr. Independent." Just didn't buy it.

Now that being said the real troubling fact is that BOR ratings are undeniable, and we have a bunch of Rhinos on the party ticket. So if you want to call me a Kool aide drinking, right wing hate monger, all I can say is that I feel the same way about things as I did when I voted for Reagan. I used to be called the majority. Haven't changed a bit. Oh well ....too bad so sad.
