BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. troops fought it out with insurgents over the last 24 hours in and near Tarmiya, one of the many volatile spots on the northern Baghdad outskirts, the military reported on Friday.
U.S. soldiers from Alpha Company run across a street during a operation in west Baghdad on August 16, 2007.
A U.S. soldier and 13 insurgents, including a armed female wearing a ski mask, were killed. Also, a boy was killed in a building during fighting. Many people were detained as well.
The first incident occurred late Thursday when soldiers from Task Force Lightning came under attack from the Honest Mohammed Mosque -- a Sunni house of worship in Tarmiya. A soldier was killed and another was wounded.
The troops are from 4th Stryker Brigade Combat, 2nd Infantry Division, serving with the U.S. force in northern Iraq called Task Force Lightning. The troop deaths brings the U.S. military toll in the war to 3,704 and the total in August to 46.
The ambush was followed by more fighting as an air weapons team engaged insurgents on the mosque roof with a Hellfire missile. The U.S. military reported the incident on Friday.
This is not the first time an attack has emanated from that mosque. Coalition forces had reported small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenade attacks from the mosque on nearby outposts since May.
Troops "were attacked at their outpost with heavy small-arms fire." Later, troops cordoned the area, worked with the mosque's groundskeeper to "pacify" the situation, and "conducted a tactical callout to individuals inside the mosque instructing them to come out."
Twenty people left the mosque and were detained, but there were armed people on the roof. An air weapons team used to a Hellfire missile to confront with the pair,

My fellow Viet Nam war Marine Corps & Army grunts will tell you that on more than one occasion we were involved in firefights with women and children...a bullet, rocket and/or mortar fired by women & children will kill you just as easy as one fired by a man.

These are the civilians that Barack Hussein Obama says we're killing -- oh, and don't forget the mainstream media -- they're always printing stories about the horrible American forces killing civilians.

Are they sure it was a woman? There have been reports of the terrorists donning women's clothing and veils while trying to escape. Seems like one of their "commanders" was apprehended in drag not too long ago.
Also, I chuckle every time I read "Honest Muhammed Mosque"...

Yes, and the fact that they're not in uniform is a war crime. They might be civilians -- but they're certainly not innocent civilians.
CNN- At least they are consistent.

We (1st Marines) captured a woman who was a participant in the firefight near Quang Tri in ‘67 who made no bones about her being a member of the cadre we went to the ville to police up.
