“President Bush today signed country-of-origin labeling laws for food imports — five years ago, he had signed that. But incredibly, those laws are still not in effect. Powerful lobbying groups — imagine this — have managed to delay implementation of those laws until 2008.

“Kitty Pilgrim reports on why a law meant to inform and to protect consumers has been delayed into all but non-existence.

“(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

“KITTY PILGRIM, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Food from all over the world, consumers may like the variety, but they also want to know where their food is coming from, and they can’t tell.

“Laws enacted by Congress in 2002 to require country-of-origin labeling, so-called COOL laws, but powerful lobbying groups pushed back implementation of those laws for most products until 2008.”

So that’s why. K Street won on this one.

The ones we had I purchased at Costco as part of a 3 or 4 pack. The flavor was an orangy something. The other two boxes we have left do not have “Made in China” stamped on them, just a code of some kind. The orange one was explicitly stated, and I think that’s what caught my son’s attention.

I’ve seen apple juice from apples in Argentina, but never oranges from China. Yuck!

I gave chondroitin and glucosamine to my nearly 13 year old Gordon Setter. Then he died suddenly this past November.

I have a “pound puppy”. She’s about 7 years old, but got mugged by a pit and a mastif while walking on a leash with me a couple years ago. We think she is part beagle and either dachshund(or bassett). Since the mugging, she had been having trouble getting around,(x-rays showing severe arthritis) so I suspect there was some injury. The vet’s meds didn’t seem to be helping so I started doing a little reasearch.

Because our labor costs and benefit requirements are much higher than those of the Chinese.

But, we are willing to pay more. Why can’t we get the items labeled so we know what not to buy?

I sent an e-mail to my representative in DC urging Congress to pass a law requiring "country of origin" on packaging. Much as I hate govt. interference, this might be one time I would be grateful for it.
