You take a very high minded and fairly modern view of sport. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, sport was not something associated with gentleman.

Falconers are notoriously boorish and physically abusive to their animals.Although I did not directly state it, my comments were targeted toward this country in that time period. English gentleman and the English aristocracy is quite another matter. Their penchant for cruelty goes beyond animals, as a man I would not have wanted to be taken and put on one of their ships in the late 18th or early 19th century or even go to one of their all male boarding schools for gentleman as far as that matters.
