“Vista isnt backwards compatible...the old drivers that worked on XP wont work on Vista.”
Not unusual. Some drivers did not work on XP sp2 that worked on XP. Remember there are literally 10’s of thousands for drivers out there for various devices and programs.
That will get fixed quickly. The sluggishness is the main problem. Oh, and I hate IE 7 with a passion.

“I have yet to determine what Vista (OR XP for that matter) can do for me that Windows 2000 cannot.”
Like Dvorak said, Win2k was a very good OS.

“Haven’t gotten around to freebasing, er, debasing myself to Vista yet.”
I am actively investigating how to get another hard drive caddy for the Toshiba I bought that has Vista on it. Toshiba is not listing it a part the sell to the general public. They also will not provide drivers for XP for that model and the call I made they offered no assistance.
The funny thing is in Europe back in January they were selling my model with 2 hard drives built in and using XP.
But the EU model names are different so I can figure out what the model number was or I would get the XP drivers for it and load XP on a new drive.
If I can get the caddy I am going to put a different HD in and load XP. I just need to get those drivers for XP for a A135 S4677 Satellite.
Then I will have a fast machine running a decent reliable OS

... though he added that most people get their operating system on new PCs
I'm building PCs here and still buy WinXP from my suppliers. I'm using Xandros Linux with VMware on my favorite computer.

He’s not as competent as you think if he expected Vista to recognize a modem.

Your statement would lead one to believe that you think Vista does not support modems. Such a position would be inconsistent with the Windows Vista hardware compatibility list.

Vista looks like a visual prozac. I do not need Microsoft to TELL me what I can load and run and store on MY "personal" computer.
File indexing is perfect for hackers and others that "might" snoop on your PC. I would never install it. If I can't find it, I don't need it.

It was somewhat tongue and cheek, but only somewhat. Vista’s support of legacy hardware is spotty at best. Modems are a thing of the past.

Vista is bloatware. The OS offers NO significant features over XP... it is just 4 times as large. That's one of the best, concise descriptions of Vista I have read.
Here's another:
