MOSCOW: Russia has warned against the use of military force against Iran and criticised Western sanctions imposed on Tehran outside the United Nations.
We are worried about increasingly frequent reports that military action against Iran is being seriously considered, Russias Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner here on Tuesday.
Its hard to imagine what that could do to the region where there are already grave problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mr. Lavrov strongly backed the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Irans nuclear programme.
Russia is against attempts to pressure the U.N. Security Council to go beyond agreed support for IAEA, the Russian Minister said, adding that the U.N. nuclear watchdog was satisfied with Irans progress in complying with IAEAs demands.
He echoed the U.N. nuclear chief ElBaradei in urging the West to learn the lessons of Iraq. No military solution
We are convinced that no modern problem has a military solution, and that applies to the Iranian nuclear programme as well, Mr. Lavrov said.
We know the consequences of ignoring the professional view of IAEA in Iraq four years ago.
He criticised the idea of unilateral sanctions by the E.U. or the United States.
If we agreed to work collectively and that is reflected in consensus decisions made by the U.N. Security Council, then what purpose do unilateral sanctions serve? he said.
Mr. Kouchner climbed down on his earlier statement that the world should prepare for war in Iran.
The worst thing to happen would be a war, and in order to avoid it, we need to talk, talk and talk, he said, shifting the emphasis of his previous statement and calling for more sanctions against Iran.
Why? ...because our US Government talked him into revising his statement.
U.S. in no rush to attack Iran -- for now

That and they do not like that the US and the EU have pretty much surrounded Russia’s southern borders.
Cyphered, "we need time to get our ducks in a row and hopefully when Iran is put to rest for the sake of humanity, we will be maybe as strong as the U.S. by then and tote some weight and be a part of it and take our chunk when it happens and have a say in post war".
Yea, its a grave problem that Iraq and Afghanistan are free to elect their own governments.
Of course they are warning against it. The “former” Soviet Union hasn’t changed a bit. Or if they did change, they have changed back with a vengeance! So much for the so-called peace dividend...
? Talking about wiping out an entire nation? If so, I wouldn't speak of "humanity" if I were you.
Russia and Iran will attack the USA watch and mark my words... ITS getting serial out there.... First Zirinovsky now this.. Russia is still the sleeping bear...
And while we talk and talk and talk...our enemies get stronger and stronger and stronger.
Great strategy. I wonder we havent tried that before.
I’m leaning toward dragging the Russians by their Lenin chin hairs out of the consulates in Chicago and San Francisco, burning the buildings to the ground and then blaming the Russians for global warming.
If someone has a better idea to deal with these commies, I’m all ears...
So the russkis say that there is no military solution to modern problems, eh? Good. When will they completely disband their military?
U.S.A. to Russia: “When we want your opinion we’ll tell you. Until then go back to your vodka and put a cork in it.”
You forgot to say that they’re also afraid we’ll find that Russian has been providing Iran with illegal arms and helping to fuel the terrorists in Iraq, thereby implicating them on the wrong side in the war on terror.
A one sided A$$ whoopin’ isn’t a war!
It’s a preventative measure!
So you think people in Islamic countries are human? NOT!
And when you consider that Russia is flexing her military muscle again....
Map Kernow replies:Talking about wiping out an entire nation

Nice try Map Kernow....your dingy attempt in misconstruing speak would make you a formidable liberal MSM editor.
Which hasn’t been paid for yet. Unlike the SAM stuff they sold Syria (which is now scrap metal).
Russia has the driving force behind a lot the turmoil in the middle east. Syria, Iran, Iraq, all of them were being funded and equipped by Russia. Russia was also behind the 1967 7-day war in Israel.
I'll try again then: were you, or were you not, calling for the genocide of the Iranian people? A simple "yes" or "no" will suffice. And by the way, I don't consider humanitarianism at all incompatible with true conservatism - in fact, I consider it a prerequisite.
I must commend you for your candor, if nothing else.
