Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS
One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.
Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.
"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.
Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.
Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.
Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee
A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.
Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

Also...GREAT job by ABC reporter!!!
Please go to the link and read the whole story. You will be moved to the core of your being!!
Great story. Unbelievable really. God Bless Pvt. Moss & the brave surgeons who made sure he made it home. Damn!
Tears running down my cheeks! God bless our brave soldiers.
This is quite a story!
God bless all the people who risked their lives to save this soldier! From the medics, to the helicopter crews who willingly took “unexploded ordinance” on their flight. Talk about bravery!
Thank you, yes...also, everyone, please ping everyone you know!!!
...and the medic is 23-freakin' years old. When I hear about these 20-something whiners living with their parents becaue "life is too tough" I get ill.
If I didn't know better, I would think it started "raining" in here about half-way through.
That’s just unreal. What a brave medic, evac team, etc.
PING PING PING PING!!!
Please read the whole article! The courage is outstanding!!
Quite a topic for next month’s UT, no?
Truly an amazing story, I am so proud of our young men in times like these.
That’s a beautiful story man. The kind of thing that makes readers want to be better men and women. It even captured the attention of my 4 y/o.
Does anyone remember the ARVN soldier with the mortar round stuck in him that was removed by American doctors in a field hospital? The solider was surrounded with four walls of sandbags. Then, reaching through ports left in the sand bags the doctors removed the mortar round.
Bravery runs in the veins of America’s fighting forces from generation to generation. The same can’t be said for our politicians.
You all have a following...hope you can ping this...never asked this before...just an amazing story.
Incredible. Just incredible.
Thanks for the ping - what a wonderful story of courage have just read the complete article and have tears in my eyes.
No sir, that is the norm with our soldiers. They will lay their life on the line any day to save their brothers in arms. When they fight, they are fighting for each other to stay alive. There are no better men than our soldiers.
Not food related, but was pinged to pass this on to everyone else.
Wow! What a story! What heroes!
And you’re right, it was a really good, well written story.
Yes, REAL men! Thank God for them.
,,guess John F kurry's medic who supplied the band air for the scratch on his arm for which and had to fill out a medical report and forward through channels (at kurry's request) must be wondering if he save a possible future US President
Thanks, HG...never saw a story before that needed this much pinging...thanks also to your list (which I am on, LOL!)
Every time I read about incidents such as this one I am overwhelmed by the bravery and strong ties these wonderful people have towards one and other.
How is it possible these heroes are from the same country as the ones who undermine their every effort to keep us safe?
I saw it on 20/20 and it was a magnificent story! They could have left him but they didn’t. I agree, God bless them all!
What brave men. And to think Kerry was given a Purple Heart for a paper cut type wound. What a difference in men and bravery.
And yes, the MSM reporter did do a good job on this story.
Holy. Freakin’. Cow.
That is utterly amazing. I am so proud of the people who serve our country.
(Anti-liberal rant follows)
(And yet, the liberals who want to run this country tell us that the military is filled with poor, uneducated nobodies who had nowhere else to go. RUBBISH!)
I remember it very well.......
Awesome story of bravery. Good job, ABC- just the facts, no agenda. Read the whole story- please!
Maybe we should let them know...
Funny I just read this via Armytimes http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/09/marine_rpg_moss_070922w/
Slightly different and with video
All...please go to #35 and see the pics, etc!!
And there are no greater COWARDS than the ones out of the 535 members of Congress that argue cut and run....and only fight to same their own political lives by appeasing the "loony left", or the current "opinion polls"!
May they all burn in....!
..don't bother, often thoughts of "it's about time" are soon forgotten with the next barage of liberal rants the MSM puts forth, whether it's from Reid, Turban durban,Schumer,or Doodie Dodd...unless they equal uplifting, heartwarming, PRO military stories at least everytime they publish a rant.....it's not worth an email stamp. How soon we forget how easily they let the top DEMS skate by without questioning the MOVEON.org or their COMPLICITY on topic....they still have not distance themselves from them ....and won't
Ping to an incredible story - read the whole thing!
I watched this on 20/20 on Friday night. From the medic to the surgeons to the explosive expert, they all saved his life while risking their own. Would anyone (with the exception of the Libs) expect anything less of our soldiers and Marines?
A question: He was interveiwed wearing his uniform. Is he still active duty?
Were his fellow Marines honored for what they did for him in the field?
I remember it as an American soldier who was in the hatch of a tank and got it in the shoulder.
I also heard from someone who was in country that an ARVN soldier with a similar injury was "treated" by Vietnamese doctors who put him in an open field and shot until the round detonated...
You're not the only one. What a story! What a soldier! Bless those that cared for him.
Not Red Dwarf related, but was pinged to pass this on to everyone else.
Were his fellow Marines honored for what they did for him in the field?
Yes, and yes.
Read the story...it's at the end.
"There are no better men than our soldiers."
A truly amazing story. Be sure to read the whole article.
This, not the fabricated enemy propaganda (insurgents, media, Murtha) of "Haditha", is the American fighting man.
