Military Medical Team Makes the 'Toughest Call' (GI IMPALED BY BOMB - courage abounds!!!)

Unexploded Rocket-Propelled Grenade Impales Army Private in Afghanistan By RUTH REISS

[snip]

One RPG skidded past Lt. Mariani's vehicle. All of the vehicles had to quickly get out of the "kill zone." But before they could get to safety, two rockets hit Pvt. Moss' Humvee.

Staff Sgt. Eric Wynn, 33, the soldier in the front passenger seat, felt one slice through his face. Moss remembers the truck practically lift up. He was thrown up against the Humvee and then moved to return fire.

"I smelled something smoking and I looked down ... and I was smoking," he said.

Wynn turned to tell Moss where to fire and saw the tail fins of the RPG sticking out of Moss' side.

Roughly the length of a baseball bat, an RPG travels at the speed of a bullet. At the front end is the warhead -- a large grenade. The detonator and fuel are contained in the shaft. On the back are its fins, pieces of metal that stick out like legs on a camera tripod. The RPG is the weapon of choice for many of the world's guerillas.

Luckily for Moss, the company medic Spc. Jared Angell, 23, who the soldiers call "Doc," was in his Humvee

[snip]

A Human Bomb The RPG that had plowed into Moss' lower abdomen stretched from one hip to the other. If the RPG went off, it would kill everyone within 30 feet of him. Yet Angell stayed close, bandaging his wounds and stabilizing the weapon so that movement wouldn't cause it to explode.

Moss was still fully conscious, so Angell ordered him to not look down at the injury. He didn't want Moss to panic.

My daughter thinks if she has spinal surgery, she won’t come out of the anesthetic.

I want to buy a home, but folks keep laughing at me.

I’ve missed more appointments than I’ve kept, and all of them were “important.”

Outside of that, things are great.

I’ll start...

Down to one machine running parts....the other two are broken awaiting the repair dude, who shows at his convenience.

My only running machine decided it would take the day off too. Seven hours later, I have it fixed and ready to go tomorrow morning. Of course, the migraine headache that started shortly after I found I had a problem hasn’t made fixin’ stuff any easier.

When Murphy bites, he really bites.

It’s a buyer’s market for houses...only problem is it may be an even better buyer’s market if you wait awhile...or not.

I get away with missing appointments until the wifey yells at me.

The weeks more than half over...something to be optimistic about.

I’ve been trying to have a migraine for three days, now.

I nearly creamed myself on the freeway yesterday.

My daughter is feeling very sorry for herself. I need some patience, and I need it ASAP!

I wouldn’t wish a migraine on my worst enemy...

I took my meds as soon as my vision blurred...It seems to have done it’s job, only inasmuch as I didn’t get a full blown headache. The medicine also tends to make me sleepy, which is a problem since I HAD to get my machine back up and running. And NO coffee after 3pm....(new anti-insomnia policy for rottndog).

GAH!

There is only one thing worse than a migraine: a toothache. Or maybe an earache.

Try decaf coffee. There is no difference in the taste, and that’s a promise! I prefer MJB or Yuban, but some are better than others.

I love coffee, but don’t like the “trembles.” So I drink the decaf. It’s the flavor...(if you fix it right!) Your coffee pot won’t know the difference!

I drink near beer...Old Milwaukee has a brand called “OM,” and it’s the smoothest non-alcoholic beer I’ve ever had.

If I want a “kick,” I drink wine. But no matter, I’m a happy drunk!

Guten Morgen, good afternoon and good evening, depending upon where you (and I) are.

My 33-hour day, featuring 25 hours in transit from Germany to Washington, is about over. The trip IS over -- defined as "the suitcase is back where any self-respecting suitcase ought to be: in the closet, once again gathering dust."

It was an "interesting" time and promises to get wilder, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow, probably evening (PDT).

Schlafen zie gut!

No time fu:r gut geschlafen, it was run run run, coupled with eat eat eat drink drink drink talk talk talk, not necessarily in that order nor to equivalent degrees, and the last full day ended with drive Drive DRIVE Drive [repeat] (on the Autobahn). The local beer in Dortmund was powerful stuff, that or I'm losing my edge through lack of practice.

No spreche Deutch...

You'd have loved Monday afternoon's meeting. Our meeting was visited by representatives from another (government-related) organization. Some of them did not speak English so our group's tradition of using English when a non-German-speaker (such as yours truly) is present went out the window. I remained for this meeting, however, because there was much political significance to my being there.

We'd prepared for a colleague to translate the essentials to me, but to my dismay the meeting opened with a round of introductions, and it was clear that more than name & employer was being given.

So when it came to me, I just said (following the pattern and easily understanding this much), "Meine Name ist N___ N___ mit Co___ und ich hab' kein Deutsch." [room breaks up in laughter] "Chair, XYZ committee."

Good enough -- and following the conversations and slides that followed through the afternoon I was surprised at how much of my limited (elementary) but still-forgotten German started flowing back.

I don't think they believed the "kein" (none) part. The first of their speakers wound up with an impassioned plea directed straight at me. Unfortunately I understood little of what he said in that sentence but if it was only summation, I understood completely.

They’re going to move her to a different hospital tomorrow, then she’ll have surgery on Friday, from the sounds of things. They need to get her pain stabilized.
So I probably won’t be here Friday until later. She thinks she won’t come out of the anesthesia, so I’m going to hold her hand.

Prayers for your daughter.

Yikes....

Do you take anything for migraines? I take Midrin...it was the only thing I tried that actually works.

What I really hate about migraines is that the pain is so bad I can’t even sleep. Once it starts, I’m forced to suffer through it. I take my medicine with me everywhere.

I used to take Imitrex, but found out it could cause stokes. Since I had three TIAs in my late 30’s, I decided the risk was too great.

But with Imitrex, I almost wished I WOULD get a migraine, just so I could take the Imitrex!

Now, I just have to deal with it as best I can. If it’s really bad, I’ll lie down in the dark with a cold compress on my right eye and wait for the pain to leave.

I don’t know if I have one headache that lasts a week, or seven headaches of a day each.

I’d say give Midrin a try....it’s a derivative of aspirin I think...It doesn't completely make the headache go away, but it makes life much more bearable for me when I'm having one.

I tried Midrin, Fiorinol and a few other drugs, but all they did was make my eyelids heavy, and make the pain worse.

Trust me: If there’s a pain med for migraines, I’ve already tried it. I’ve been having them since I was eight years old.

Actually, when I was on the boat, before I had my migraines diagnosed, the doc told me to drink as much coffee as possible when the headache starts....since migraines are a vascular thing, the idea is that by ramping up the heart rate, it would slow down or stop the headache. It actually worked sometimes...of course I was bouncing of the bulkheads...

I didn’t know, either. I don’t think the concept of childhood migraines was even a remote medical idea, but I’m here to tell you that I suffered, just the same.

My son started to get them when he was nine, and one of my neices got them at eight, so I’m thinking it’s something in the gene pool.
