GOP SPLIT ON GOV'S DRIVE RULE

September 25, 2007 -- ALBANY - The state's top Republican leadership unexpectedly split yesterday on the controversial move by Democratic Gov. Spitzer to allow the granting of driver's licenses to illegal aliens. State GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello ripped Spitzer for eliminating the requirement that people provide a Social Security number for a driver's license...

But Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno backed Spitzer, saying, "We have hundreds of thousands of aliens here, and I'm not sure it serves the public good to deprive them of their ability to go to school, to go to work, to do the kinds of things you have to do to lead a normal life."

It'd be one thing if this was Bloomberg in NYC -- he's a former lib-Republican gone independent; but Bruno is the once conservative leader of the State Senate.

There are 152,000 people who lost their licenses in New York because they couldn't verify their identities--because they didn't have social security numbers. They are almost certainly illegal, and also potential terrorists. They broke the law. Gov Spitzer is about to send them all a note saying they can reapply and get their licenses! This makes no sense to me.

No I can’t explain - and this is not simply a local New York state issue. Once you have a valid driver’s license it opens doors across the country. Spitzer went after anyone and everyone on Wall Street yet now wants to give illegal aliens a de facto amnesty. And Republicans are going along!

Efforts to Allow Illegal Aliens Driving Privileges May Be Gaining Momentum

As neighboring New York announces it will no longer require proof of citizenship to obtain a driver’s license, controversial legislation is being considered in Trenton that would allow undocumented residents to obtain a driver privilege card. Supporters say it makes sense to offer people who are driving now without licenses or insurance the proper documentation.

It’s a public safety issue, according to state Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-Mercer), a sponsor of the legislation.

“My focus is to make sure persons who utilize cars are in fact insured and have the skills necessary to drive,” said Gusciora. “The important thing here is to make sure people who are using our roads are adequately trained in driving.”

Opponents of the measure point to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Four of the hijackers were able to obtain driver’s licenses even though they were in the country illegally.

Gusciora responded that documentation is safe. “I think I’d rather have somebody registered in our state and have some information on them than not,” said Gusciora.

- My own guess is that the back room boys in both Parties have become convinced that they cannot afford to lose the Hispanic vote to the immigration issue. If Hispanics ever decide to vote Democrat as a block on this issue then they, along with the already lost black vote, would ensure that no Republican gets elected to any office higher than dog catcher ever again.
The recent rebellion by the voter base against the proposed immigration reform only caused the back room boys to back off for a while until the issue dies down and they can try another tack.
Make no mistake - they will eventually get their way, most likely with the announcement of another blanket amnesty program within the next few years. By and large, both Parties will support amnesty because they fear or favor it’s Hispanic vote potential.

The license is id. I don’t know what the ins companies will do but I’m sure the State will come up with some law that will absolve them of any liability for insuring improperly documented illegals.
