It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:
A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…
I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…
Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"
I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

It is very Christian to judge another man’s faith. It is even more Christian, even highly intelligent to judge the faith of a man whom you have never met and with whom you have never spoken. /s/
If Dobson were truly a man of faith, he would be doing public penance for this slur.
The truth is that the infamous "quote" is from a conversational phone interview, in which Dobson confessed that he didn't know much about Thompson's faith, and that he wasn't sure whether or not the man was a Christian. This uncertainty has been mischaracterized by Dobson-haters as some sort of definite statement that Dobson thinks Fred not to be a Christian. That's not what he said.
I think this is a great response, but I do question if Rudy or Mitt would get the same Kudos if they said the same thing?

I didn’t change the headline, moron. I never claimed Fred said the words, “take a hike”. That’s why I never put those words in quotes and put them in parentheses.
You were just to stupid to notice.
This type of nonesense arguing smells of “divide and conquer”.
It will ultimately only benefit one woman.

As a rule, when someone HATES Dobson (as you see here on FR), that tells me something about the person. Not Dobson.
Thompson (who I want to like) isn’t exciting many folks so far. For him to diss the hardest-working and most convinced element of his should-be base... well, it’s not real bright.
I suspect few will actually read that, as they prefer to believe the lies about Dobson than to spend a minute learning the truth.
Dobson needs to learn more about what being a good Christian means. Perhaps the media is twisting what Dobson is saying and doing, but I have lost a lot of respect for him.
Not a particularly diplomatic response for one wishing the votes of as many as possible and certainly not one to use on a fellow conservative Republican.
One wonders if Fred might have treated a member of the Log Cabin Republicans thus.
A more polite answer might have been phrased as, "I'm sure if Dr.Dobson and I were to have a personal conversation, we would agree on far more than we disagree."

If you’re a Christian, you will love what Christ loves. Scripture labels “The Church” as His “Bride.” Surely Christ loves His Bride, right? It follows that we should love the Church as well, and seek to engage with it.
Going to church does not make someone a Christian. But if they avoid church, that may be an indication that they are not a Christian. Note the word “may.”
You wrote about me, “you consider faith in God and fellowship with believers to be an important quality in a candidate.” You’re a liar. Where have I inferred that?

You’re right. The media are doing their best to misrepresent what Dobson says, which muddies the water when it comes to Fred Thompson.
I respect Dobson. And I’m inclined to vote for Fred in the primaries. And I’m old enough to know when the MSM is being manipulative. And I’m distressed that FReepers are being manipulated into hating Dobson for things he didn’t say.
Well la de da. Dobson was a jerk to Fred, and questioned his faith. Fred responded with a coy “kiss my hindquarters” and Dobson deserved it.
