Russia to Revive Serial Production of Strategic Tu-160 Bombers

Given that strategic Tu-160 bombers have resumed their regular patrol, Russia will probably have to revive their full-scale serial production at Kazan Aircraft Production Association, Interfax-AVN reported.

“In Kazan, there are the planes [Tu-160], which construction hasn’t been completed. One of them is to be handed over to Air Force this year, the next one – presumably in a year. Afterwards, of course, we have to resume all production cycle and revive all cooperation releasing component parts,” said Tu-160 Chief Designer Valentin Bliznyuk. “Then it will be really good support to Air Force that has sharply brought momentum to the flights of long-distance aviation.”

Non-availability of required parts and components is one of the most acute problems today, Bliznyuk specified. “Lots of component parts were manufactured at least 20 years ago.

Since then, the element base has been materially upgraded and its replacement is nearly always associated with the need to make various elaborations and hold additional tests of the aircraft,” Bliznyuk said. According to the chief designer, elaboration and upgrade are aggravated by new economic requirements that specify holding tenders for buying equipment and R&D solutions. “All this delays the upgrade of the bombers,” Bliznyuk said.

Looks like they copied a B-1B.

Nothing new about that.

Actually, the Tu-160 is significantly bigger, faster, and longer-range than the B-1B. What surprises me is that Russia can afford to operate their existing fleet, let alone build new ones.

Pity the poor pilot who has to fly a plane that’s been sitting on the assembly line for a decade or so.

Russia aerospace technology has always been superb whether it they are copy-cated or not. The Chinese are keenly aware of this. Russian production of this sophisticated long-range intercontinental strategic bomber will be for profitable export to the Chinese. The political irony is these same platforms will be a long threat to Russian. The short-term power politc benefits are their only consideration.

Russia is the world's second largest oil exporter. $80 a barrel oil has been real good to them.

The laughed at the supersonic B-58. But, this Tu-160, anachronistic or not, is a fine-looking aircraft.

G-d Bless the Russians.

They’ve given us (the USA) a gift more valuable than gold.
Reasons to keep our air fleet up to snuff and
not get complacent.

“Reasons to keep our air fleet up to snuff”

That’s sarcasm, right?
If Hillary wins, we’ll be lucky to get an aircraft in the air, let alone fight with it....

I remember the Air Force, circa mid-90’s, scavenging parts, and reaching into your own pocket (or begging DONATIONS) to be able to take an aircraft to an Airshow!!

Honestly, it wasn't sarcasm.
And I do agree that if Hillary! wins, the picture would most likely
darken again...into a replay of what the US Military suffered through
under her horndog husband.

But I'm going to keep the faith...hoping that Hillary! will make
some great gaffe during the Presidential campaign.

AND even if elected,
that she'll be just as effective in gutting our military as
the majority Democrats have been in forcing a withdrawal from Iraq.

I know these situations are long-shots...but gotta' keep the faith.
As the Israelis said during the post-WWII years:
"There is no other alternative" but to fight on.
