LA Times: Give State Scholarships to Illegals
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

With politicians and newspapers like they have in California, it's no wonder the state has become a magnet for millions of illegal immigrants. The latest lunacy? The legislature has enacted a bill giving illegals scholarships to state universities. And the Los Angeles Times predictably wants Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign it into law.

The so-called "California Dream Act" was cooked up by state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles). In its editorial of today, "Make the Dream Reality," The Times plays lip service to the problem the law would create: "We understand the objections that arise when a society extends benefits to illegal immigrants that once were reserved solely for legal residents. The easier life becomes for those who crossed our borders illegally, the more incentive there is for others to follow."

Exactamundo. But wth its next breath the newspaper brushes off the very problem it identified:

These particular students generally had no choice but to emigrate with their parents, and they have persevered and performed well in school. Aren't these the immigrants we most want to encourage and support?
Doesn't the LAT understand that whether or not the student made a choice to enter the country illegally, the legislation would represent one more enticement for millions of adults to flout our immigration laws? And to answer the paper's question: no, we don't want immigrants who enter the country illegally, whether or not they qualify for college.

Bill Clinton used to like to say that he was representing the interests of people who "play by the rules." The new crop of liberals want to share the taxpayers' wealth even with those who flout the rules. This is a perversion of the American Dream that the Times and the legislature pretend to promote.

Cold hard facts mean nothing to liberals, and I say that without a hint of humor. They acknowledge the disasterous consequences this proposal would bring, and then throw their arms open and embrace it anyway. This damn shit has GOT to stop.

“no choice but to emigrate with their parents”......they got that right but they are missing a big point here. What better way to teach their kids that breaking the law of this country will have a negative impact on them. There’s more going on about this than people see. There are those that want to break down our society, and not the Mexicans, so that they can bring in the NAU and the Amero currency. Follow the money folks. Those in the money stand to make billions when we switch to the Amero and it won’t be the average American citizen.

“GOT to stop”??

How? By the Republican elites, like Rove, Martinez, Bush, McCain, Graham, Warner, etc.?

Illegals are now really 30-40 million, and will be over 100 million in less than 10 years. That will guarantee a new Latino nation more like Mexico with its corruption and poverty.

Enjoy it while you can. Aztlan is coming.

Don’t illegals already get in-state tuition rates? This is just more of the same.

If our judiciary weren’t completely broken, they would find this to be unconstitutional discrimination. Why should an illegal get a better deal than a citizen from another state?

Two of my daughters are currently attending state universities in other states, and I jokingly said as they went off this fall that they could save us a lot of money if they just told the bursar’s office that they were Mexican illegals.

Unfortunately, I don’t really want to break the law, even if it’s to get the same deal offered to lawbreakers. And I’m not sure how they would get job references after they graduate if they claim that their names were Gonzalez and Medellin. I suppose that could be worked out, too, since I keep reading that after some illegal is arrested for killing someone while DUI, he usually goes under several different names and appears to have no trouble doing it.

This is why a lot of taxpayers are leaving CA.
Take your equity and run..the state is broke and trying to figure out how to spend more.
This isn’t fair to US citizens and those who play by the rules.

Is it still federal law that if the state college allows illegals to pay the in-state tuition that the college will then have to allow all out of state students to pay the in-state rate or loose federal education subsidies? I know the Dems and RINOs were trying to remove that law recently, but I don't think it passed that time.

It also raises the question of equal treatment under the law. Every scholarship given to an illegal means one less for a legal citizen of CA.

The L A TIMES and their entire staff can kiss my royal behind.
They are all too quick to spend everyone’s money but their own.
The cutbacks there have saved them enough money to pay for “scholarships” themselves.
Stay out of my pocketbook!!!!!

I don’t see it stopping. They arrogantly ignore the will of the people without consequence. People vote on referendums and their votes are set aside. There certainly is no political solution. There is no redress of grievances. so what can be done? The people certainly do not have the stomach to physically restrain these enemies of America.

I can’t get out of this state quick enough. Is it possible that Arnold has enough sense to veto this?

Tamar Jacoby, you lied.....again!

Tamar Jacoby, joined at the hip with all those other ‘comprehensive’ reform traitors, was on the Lars Larson Radio show last night. Among other distortions, she argued with Larson that Hispanic illegal aliens have an 85% graduation rate! NOT!

High School Graduation Rates in the United States

This study examines high school graduates rates in the US. It reports that the national graduation rate for the class of 1998 was 71%. For white students the rate was 78%, while it was 56% for African-American students and 54% for Latino students. (NOTE! This study is from the the Manhatten Inst. - the same group Jacoby works out of!)

From the Pew Hispanic Center:

Foreign-born youths are significant contributors to the nation’s teen school dropout population. Only 8 percent of the nation’s teens are foreign born, but nearly 25 percent of teen school dropouts were born outside the United States, according to a Pew Hispanic Center analysis of data from the 2000 U.S. Census.

Many of these foreign-born school dropouts–nearly 40 percent–are recent arrivals to this country who were already behind in school before they left for the United States.
According to NCES produced data on dropout rates for 2002 by race and ethnicity, one third of dropouts were Hispanics.
