What is "illegal"? As of July l, not wearing a seat belt in Kansas makes you illegal. If you hold your crying child in your arms in a moving car, you're illegal. You are illegal if you smoke a cigarette in some cities, or if you burn your field, wash your car, or water your lawn during a ban. You can even become "illegal" without any effort on your own part.
Millions of people in this country arrived with their families as young children years ago. They grew up, went through school, married Americans, and had children, who, by birth, are Americans. If you think that being married to an American or being a parent of American children gives a person legal status under current law, you are wrong. Marriage or familial ties does not change your immigrant status.
Then people should "get legal," shouldn't they? Well, they very much want to, but today's immigration law makes it virtually impossible. See, you cannot apply for legal status while in the U.S. You must apply from your home country, even if you haven't lived there since you were a baby, and you have no home there to go back to. But suppose you do go back to your native country to apply. Part of the application process to come to the U.S. from another country includes an interview and affidavit both, which ask the specific question if you have lived in the U.S. without documentation. If your answer is "yes," then you must wait 10 years before applying again. If you lie and say "no," that's perjury (remember your name is on those children's birth certificates), and you are indefinitely barred from re-entering the United States. Millions of U.S. undocumented residents are in this very situation today. No intentional "crime" was committed, no harm or damage to anyone, yet in this era of terrorist paranoia, there is no avenue for millions of hardworking, otherwise law-abiding, people to become "legal."
Is it a realistic expectation for mothers or fathers in this situation to leave their families with no legal hope to rejoin them? Most Americans do not understand that strict enforcement of current law amounts to government-forced abandonment of families. U.S. society already feels the negative effects of broken homes and poverty from loss of breadwinners. Our country is not made better or safer by creating more.
People who are already here working, who have family ties, education, English, live upright lives, and have positively contributed to our society, should have some reasonable way to apply for and get legal work/resident status. It's time to change the law.
This is all nanny state stuff and alot of it was voted in either by those who want nanny states or by those elected officials who believe that government is the best God of the People .. Right here in Ohio we have the same Nanny whiners which amounts to no more than legalized Prohibition through the voice of the Voters some of which just hits a square with a pencil not caring weather down the road it effects them or not and yet they will be the first to cry to high heavens when something they want ends up becoming illegal
Government should concentrate on getting rid of citizens and aliens who steal and assault and let hard working people alone regardless of their immigration status.
Im cut from a cloth that is different from yours i guess one of these illegal Mexicans drove drunk and killed my Uncle then ran away come to find out he did the same thing in another state the woman lived but is serverly handicapped
No sir/ma'am i want them gone start over send them to mexico or canada or wherever they came from mind you not isolationism but a new beginning and if mexico or canada has a problem with it let them change their government they are both socialist countries we are not not yet anyway but were fanning the flames of it with every election and if ANY democrat gets in office again THE GRAND EXPERIMENT CALLED FREEDOM IS OVER !
If you don't think so just look at whats running and what they propose !
Of course, let people cheat, and the cheaters will come.
America is and has always been a very generous nation. But what kind of idiot is generous to their own burglar?
I agree that our immigration system punishes those who try to immigrate legally. It’s all carrot on the illegal side and all stick on the legal side. Apparently, some politically powerful groups like it that way.
Understand that we got whacked (I say that as someone who told the state to say no), and now they are getting it. It’s a timing thing where the government is flat-out lying when they tell you the purpose of this bill.
What is this, a “how to be an invader” handbook?
DEE ANN GRUMMON (the author) is a moron. What is it about these idiots that they don’t understand the meaning of the word ILLEGAL?
We need to get the invaders out of here. If you’re here without a visa, you are a criminal.
Completely off topic, here, but I "very much" want one of those big screen flat panel tv, ocean front property, and maybe even a sail boat complete with a house on ocean front property. If I work hard for the next 10 or so years, I may be able to get what I want.
Wrong. It makes you a legal citizen committing an illegal act.
“What is this, a how to be an invader handbook?”
LMBO!
Let’s all write our legislators and demand that they make it a crime to enter this country illegally.
ACK! Re-reading that, I think I "very much" need to get some sleep. The tv, boat, and house will have to wait.
I think we should also be billing Mexico for services provide to Mexicans in this country.
There’s still a few places in Texas where you can by executed by hanging. Wonder if Rick Perry Nafta knows.
These sorts of outright, blatant lies do not help your cause.
I’m sorry for your uncle’s family. My uncle was killed by an idiot truck driver. Am I mad at all truck drivers. No. It wouldn’t be reasonable. Neither is it reasonable to be mad at all illegals because of a bad one. I agree with the sentiments in the original post. My grandmother came to the USA from Denmark at a time when no visa was required. I think the current system that penalizes those who try to come in legally or those who try to legalize after coming in is idiotic.
My parents might have forced me into a life of crime as a child, does that mean that if, as an adult, I continue earning my living by breaking the law, I am committing illegal acts, yes, I am.
I’m confused. I thought those folks were called anchor babies?
Or at least deduct it from the Billion dollars this administration plans to give them this year.Thats on top of the millions in aid we already give them.
