SAN DIEGO -- With fire spreading quickly westward, San Diego County officials ordered the evacuation of a huge area east of Interstate 15 between Del Dios Highway and Highway 56 early Mon"This is the worst fire this county has ever seen -- worse than the Cedar Fire [of 2003]," Sheriff Bill Kolender said.

At a news conference shortly after 6 a.m., officials said fires had spread dramatically overnight, whipped by fierce Santa Ana winds. They said fire had jumped Interstate 15 at Lake Hodges and was burning in parts of Rancho Bernardo. Because of the explosive and unpredictable nature of the blazes, all residents living between Interstate 15 and Interstate 5 from Del Dios Highway in the north to Highway 56 in the south were told to begin evacuating.

"This fire is moving very quickly," San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said. "Watch TV, listen to the radio and have your car prepared to leave."

Among the communities in the evacuation area are Rancho Sante Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Del Mar Heights and Fairbanks Ranch and parts of Rancho Penasquitos.

Officials have opened Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley to handle the large number of evacuees.

Sanders asked everyone in San Diego County to minimize the use of cell phones to leave the airways free for the use of emergency personnel.day.

I am viewing local television and the City of Irvine is engulfed in thick brown smoke... a horrible sight.
Prayers for our Orange County FReepers.

It’s pretty damn smokey here too in Brea (from Irvine.) Hopefully some nut doesn’t set Brea Canyon on fire.

Do you think that there will be looting, raping and pillaging inside of Qualcomm?

No, and why would you even think such a thing could happen in this country?

The neighborhood where we lost six houses was on the north side of Hodges. The fire was running down the riverbed for a while, but this latest wind change probably will take it in the back door of RSF. It’s also busily making its way up Black Mountain halfway between RSF and the 15.

Got it now,,,still lookin’ for maps,,,

Awful. Is this a fire of unprecedented magnitude? Will keep praying.

All San Diego County schools closed tomorrow (well, those that weren't closed today will be closed until further notice). Some schools closing now. My son's, and daughter's, closing at noon.

The change, just in a few hours...I looked at my son's school website just an hour ago, and there was no plan to close. The wind died down in SOuth COunty, the area is smoky and ashy.

I think that's a good thing. I would rather have my children at home with me with all of this going on. Stay safe!

An interstate highway, including the total width of its easement, is about 10X wider than any common firebreak, ad it didn’t stop this monster.

So, what would you suggest, denuding a mile-wide swath of Earth?

Have you thought about how you might address the soil erosion issues involved with having so much bare dirt; both by water and wind?

Not to be harsh, just to point out that these things are more complex than they seem to be, and, quite often, solutions come with their own set of new problems. If we’re lucky, the ratio is 1:1 and we trade a difficult problem for an easier one. Most of the time, we’re not that lucky.

"I’m up in Carlsbad...."

My sister-in-law is in Carlsbad (just east of I5)...she's a bit freaked and panicking to some extent...

I've been attempting to reassure her that the worst looks south, and unless the wind changes, she should be spared....also to keep on top of the news and be prepared to leave if requested...

Please be so kind as to ping me if you believe things are taking a turn for the worst in your area....

Thanks ahead of time...

My family is in Poway, and they were evacuated. My little brother works for the FD in San Marcos... I was able to talk to him for about 20 seconds... I can try and keep people apprised as to what's going on... I know where Pomerado Hospital is... my family used to live in Scripps, not too far from there... They were evacuated in 2003 as well. I still can't reach some of them right now...

I'm in St. Louis... so I know as much as anyone else not in the thick of it.

You all are far too sensitive and are certainly taking my comment out of context.

You made a stupid comment and got the appropriately caustic responses. You had it coming; you'd be better off apologizing.

My guess would be that some schools are being used as evacuation centers. In that case, kids may be staying at their own school or going to another school building, but classes can’t stay in session when a building is being used as an evacuation center.

Also a lot of staff and some students at schools which aren’t in immediate danger, would have to travel through dangerous areas to get there, or are busy evacuating their own homes. And school buses generally cover a very large area, with the same buses being used for high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in a staggered schedule, and with drivers often coming to work from locations outside the area they drive in.

Well of course Katrina rings a bell. But can you cite any valid reports of rapes took place in the Superdome during the aftermath of Katrina?

The reports of rape inside the Superdome were rumor and not fact.

Another . . . Quixy . . . . type . . . request . . .

Please keep, as you are moved and able conviently to do . . .

please keep a kind of oversight eye to what you are doing in this situation . . .

I believe these SITUATIONS will be . . . very educational precursors to other massively devastating situations looming on the horizon . . .

and, personally,. I believe FREEPERS CAN AND WOULD DO WELL TO LEARN ALL WE CAN AT THESE MOMENTS so we can be at least a little ahead of the ROP and globalist idiots in their tyrannical moves in such situations.

IF NOTHING ELSE, WE SHOULD BE AHEAD OF THE PACK IN HELPING FELLOW FREEPERS, CONSERVATIVES, AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANS . . .

just a thought . . . a modest proposal . . .
