A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day......Oct 29-30 -07....Military Tribute

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I have been including them here as I receive enough to make another collage.
I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
We have featured different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
Every Monday we post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day!

All - had a nice outing yesterday at Lehman's in Kidron Ohio. This is in the heart of Amish Country. The store was built in 1849 originally & now is really vast & so much fun. ALl sorts of toys, hardware, housewares etc.. People come by buses from vary long distances. Here is the link to the store: Store Site. It is in the middle of farm country & has a few associated stores that have built nearby to capitalize on the tourists who come here.

They have retro look electronic stoves & frig's ... wild & very expensive.. 5000+.If you check the site it is the Heartland brand.

They have a lot of NON electronic things (for the Amish & also people who have vacation home w/o power).. the treddle sewing machine was fun!.. Lots of appliances run by propane (which I guess is okay for Amish).. And the most outrageous collection of wood stoves I have ever seen. The have all you need to make your own kraut(well, you need to get your own cabbage).

The John Deere toys are out of this world.. they have a bell room.. all sorts of bells for calling the farmers in, putting on your horse, anything, Amazing collections of cookie cutters, hurricane lamps, lanterns, globe lamps, baskets, wood racks, pottery, enamel ware etc... If it is common & available readily elsewhere, it wont be here probably.

I got a couple "soy candles" which I had never heard of.. one is orange spice (smells like a cream sickle) ; and Mulberry, which I now have on here. The brand is Kristin. Also got some bottled "stove scents for wood stove, which I use in a lot of ways...don't have a wood stove here now. Got two bottles one is spice cake & the other Cirocq

Can put a drop in simmer pot or pan water on stove & it is a wonderful long lasting scent. Also put a few drop in water bottle, shake well & spray to refresh pot pourri

Been to the store maybe a dozen times over the years & each time discover a new section. This past time I discovered a "mark down section". Found a LOT I liked there but just got one book for half price called Everything You Need to Know Before You Call the Doctor which is a book after my own heart. I got a few other small things.

After that we went to a Fruit Farm that I like.. Lots of apples, cider, other fruit, Amish bakery & cheeses/candy etc. Took another few bags to car.

Last stop befoe dinner was at Clinton(yuk name) Ohio metro park area.. Dogs & we got more exercise.. the store was a killer on my back. Slow walking & standing for hours.. The couple mile hike was a quicker pace & felt good to be out. The color is beyond peak but was still gorgeous. We did our last stop for dinner at Macaroni Grill.

Went with my friend Patty (since HS) and family friend FReeper Wheelbarrow .. Bill. He at 82 had a great day & fun keeping up with us. Might post a few pix later.

from my friend Ken from Oklahoma (well he was my brother’s friend first).. good message

@@@

There was a Chemistry professor in a large college that had some Exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the professor noticed one young man (exchange student) who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country’s government and install a new communist government.

In the midst of his story he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked, “Do you know how to catch wild pigs?”

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said this was no joke. “You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, who are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat, you slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd.

Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening to America . The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. (promises of universal “free” heath care) While we continually lose our freedoms — just a little at a time.

One should always remember “There is no such thing as a free lunch!” Also, “You can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

Also, if you see that all of this wonderful government “help” is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America . If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life then you will probably delete this email, but God help you when the gate slams shut!

Hi Dolly
Sounds like a terrific day! I just looked at the on line store. Neat items. The fruit farm sounds fun too. Good eats. :) Look forward to seeing your pictures!

Dolly, I love to hear your stories! I have never got to visit Lehman’s but we did get their catalogs for years. My husband loved them. I saw the stoves you described and they were the most fantastic looking things ever. (with fantastic prices!)
We could sit for hours and look at their catalogs. Sometimes we raced to see who could get it in our hands first.

Every now and then, I will get a mailing from them. We ordered a few ‘small things’ but never anything big, even though we would like to! I can’t imagine seeing it in person. Sounds like you all had a wonderful time and ate at some interesting places. I don’t know how Wheelbarrow kept up. I am not sure I could. Give us some pictures when you can!

A few words about your “political statement”. I agree with the article in every way. I was taught I had to work for everything I had. There were very hard times now and then but we managed to always tough it out. That is why our generation is so strong and have our beliefs.

I was taught that I needed insurance and the only way I could have it was to buy it. Our parents taught us there was no free lunch. If they were alive today, they wouldn’t believe what has happened in this country. Every politician is promising to give more, more, more. Especially Hillary! And there are thousands standing with their hands out waiting!

When I grocery shop, I compare my grocery basket with those who are on food stamps. They buy three times what I buy. They will have the finest roasts, finest steaks, snacks running out their yahoo, and looks like every frozen item the store sells! I am not against fat.....but they are usually huge.

My son, being in the computer business, says the folks living on the give away government checks buy everything the cable system has to offer, including the Showtimes, HBO’s, etc. They get the best of everything! Now I realize there are a few who might absolutely have to have it but that is a minority group. Well, I have bashed enough! Guess many others feel the same way I do!

Bon Voyage

READ: 2 Timothy 4:1-8

The time of my departure is at hand. —2 Timothy 4:6

Paul’s word departure in 2 Timothy 4:6 is freighted with significance. It means "loosing" or "unmooring." It’s a word he uses again when he sighs, "I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ" (Phil. 1:23).

Departure is a nautical term that suggests "shipping out"—weighing anchor, slipping the lines that tether us to this world and getting underway. It’s a marvelous metaphor for dying.

For believers in Christ, death is not an end but a beginning. It means leaving this old world behind and getting to a better place, completing the purpose for which we were made. It’s a time for joy and excitement and a hearty "Bon Voyage!"

All voyages, however, are fraught with uncertainty, especially those that pass through waters never sailed before. We don’t fear death so much as we do the passage. Who knows what dangers lie ahead?

But the journey is not uncharted. One has taken it before us, and He has returned to bring us safely through. Although we pass through the valley of the shadow of death, God is with us all the way (Ps. 23:4). His hands are on the helm as He guides us to the heavenly haven He has prepared for us (John 14:1-3).

Say not it’s a dreadful journey
When the Savior leads the way;
It’s but passing through the shadows
To the land of endless day!  —Bosch

Those who fear God need not fear death.

They had a bout 15 varieties of apples that they grow in orchards. This place is really in the boonies & we tripped upon it accidently at a prior trip. Here is a long hedge of topiary with apples.. so pretty.

Here are Bill & I at a large pumpkin close to the areas where the apples are available to pick. They are only 45 cents/pound & have none of that awful wax on them.

One pix of our couple hour walk at the metro park. We had to take the trails for a bit but then went off trail (dogs are supposed to be leashed).. lots of lakes, ponds, rivers, stumps with critters inside etc. This is part of the OE canal that is near my house.. but about 45 miles further south. The old locks are partially preserved.

Pat & I at Macaroni Grill . Look at the size of their house wine Cainti.. 4.99 /glass & equivalent to 2 regular wine servings.

Will post some pix from store later..(or maybe tomorrow)

Your lesson touched me today. An elderly lady from church (she is 85) received word that her 58 year old daughter, who lives in Amsterdam, had an aneurysm and died before they could get her to the hospital. I just called her and told her that I loved her and that my heart was breaking and I couldn’t imagine what she was feeling. She was crying of course. Told her I would be over around noon. Think I will take some KFC and a cake.

So speaking of departure, none of us know the moment! Her daughter was a Christian....Thank you, Mr. Mayor!

Thank you Rus! I have an “oh my” story re: this devotional.. I received it twice this morning in Email and you had it posted today.

I think God is talking to me also. Have had a lot of death in my life this past calendar year & although I face my own mortality years ago(at age 31) there has been more & more for this “death chaplain” to examine still yet.

We must treasure our relationships & always ourself be ready to meet our maker. We are not promised tomorrow or even a half hour from now..

Dolly, wow, what a day... a nice break for you all. The loveliness of autumn comes shining through. I received Lehman’s catalog at one time, along with dozens of others. I think, before I discovered internet, I used to while away hours looking through catalogs, occasionally buying something. But, more often than not, I’d be sending it back...lol.

Knowing what to do before you call the doc, I can dig that. My Mom would have loved that book you bought. Does it have any wisdom re skin conditions, e.g., eczema?

You look great, Bill looks great, Patty looks great... did they buy stuff too? Oh, btw, I love speckled enamelware...

Howdy, Miss Meg ... we had to evacuate last week so I grabbed little Coffee and we headed down into the desert for the day.

Returned that night ... just a few stragglers and the sheriffs in town ... spent an eerie couple of days without power while the world burned around us, but the winds kept us safe with the fires always to the West.

After I felt it OK, I left for a couple of days, the cats in the care of a neighbor.

Coffee, my number one, is quite irritated that I was away ... but I’m glad to be back ... there’s no place like home ... )

Hut-2-3-4....

As he was drilling a batch of recruits, the sergeant saw that one of them was marching out of step. Walking up next to the man as they marched, he said sarcastically: “Do you know they are all out of step except you?”

“What?” asked the recruit innocently.

“I said — they are all out of step except you!” thundered the sergeant.

The recruit replied, “Well, sarge, you’re in charge — you tell them!”

All...PLEASE pray for the safety of my Toby.. been missing since 1:30 in national park.

the all took off after a deer & all came back in 5 or so minutes(Toby normally is also.).. but not this time. We have scrounged & called, whistled etc. in case he broke a leg or was caught in trap. Having your pet missing Halloween eve is not good. He is very trusting & friendly & will readily approach people..

On his tag is all the info if his collar didn't come off. we have notified the police & national park dispatchers..

Trusting God & praying for my little guy

This is about 10 miles south of my home (as the crow flies & via the Towpath & river) He is not street savvy at all

Toby is here pictured closest to me.. the light golden mix

Thanks everyone

Her daughter being a Christian is a comfort and a Blessing.

Although the loss is great, knowing that she is with our Lord and Savior she will find comfort. I have lost many in recent years, some I know were saved and some I’m not sure.

For those that were saved, I look forward to seeing again.

Thanks, Mr. Mayor ... it’s been a long hard year thus far and I needed to come back to the Finest for some cool, cool water to refresh my weary self.
