"My grandfather taught me how to say the Pledge of Allegiance when I was 2," Obama said, his annoyance obvious. "During the Pledge of Allegiance you put your hand over your heart. During the national anthem you sing."

Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home, swing low, sweet chariot, comfing for to carry me home.

It seems the answer lies in Public Law 99-344 which became law on July 7, 1976. It states in part:

“(18) by striking out section 6 and inserting in lieu therof the following: “SEC. 6. During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart....””

Hand over the heart was not required until 1976. Obama and others like me were taught hand over heart for pledge and no hand over heart for anthem. Obama, it seems, was just going with what he had been correctly taught many years ago.

Since then it is a requirement.

LOL, yeah, he’s only had 31 years to catch up. Give him time.

>> He’s got a little problem with basic human anatomy, it would seem.

Don’t assume they were saluting the U.S. with the Flag at their back.

So his Grandfather didn’t teach him everything patriotic correctly—what do you expect, he was probably some sort of Arab goat humper...

Obama's American grandfather was a furniture salesman and WWII Army veteran.

You’re right, he should know, especially being a senator, but frankly, I didn’t know it was a requirement until I did some research tonight. For many years now I’ve been thinking that all these people with hand over heart for anthem were doing it wrong.

So I learned something myself tonight.

Simple f*ckwad. This is what you get with turd-worlders.

I can find many other things to fault him on, this seems petty.

I started elementary school in Ohio in 1952 and we were always instructed to “salute” the National Anthem with our hands over our hearts. As Americans, we didn’t need a law to tell us it was the right thing to do.

That’s fine, and in Texas in the sixties in elementary school we were taught not to. I remember distinctly that even in the early seventies at the friday night high school football game, everybody stood and sang, but no one put their hand over their heart. Not even the WWII vets like my father. I never saw it happen until the late seventies, but it’s fine if you did in the fifties.

The point is Obama should now know better. I’ll be curious to see if someone gets to him about this whether he does the same thing next time.

WW II vets know what to do in front of an American flag, and during the national anthem. Both of my parents were WW II vets. I attended the dedication of the WW II memorial—Vets by the tens of thousands—none seemed to have any problem with “what to do”.
