Dodd, Huckabee want answers on McClellan charges ("Plamegate")
Salon ^ | November 21, 2007 | Tim Grieve

Posted on 11/24/2007 5:03:07 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

It's hard to imagine that Scott McClellan's allegations that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were involved in the false exoneration of Karl Rove and Scooter Libby in the Valerie Plame case will be treated as anything but another footnote in the truth-challenged history of the Bush administration. It will be the spring of 2008 before McClellan's book is published -- deep into a presidential race -- and we'll eat the paper this isn't printed on if either Democrats in Congress or Michael Mukasey will be willing to go to the wall then in a serious investigation of what really occurred back in the fall of 2003.

That's not to say it shouldn't happen, of course. As Chris Dodd said Tuesday, McClellan's allegations -- as vague as they are -- raise "several important questions that need to be answered. If in fact the President of the United of States knowingly instructed his chief spokesman to mislead the American people, there can be no more fundamental betrayal of the public trust."

Dodd is calling on Mukasey to launch an "immediate investigation" into McClellan's claims to "determine the facts of this case, the extent of any cover up and determine what the president knew and when he knew it."

We haven't heard any Republicans go quite that far. But in an appearance on "Hardball" Tuesday night, GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said McClellan's charges are "serious" and that Bush himself ought to answer them. "Oh, I think he will have to respond to it, because the closeness and the fact that Scott McClellan was one of his most trusted aides and in the position of press secretary," Huckabee said.

There's been no word from the president yet -- he's relaxing at Camp David -- but the Associated Press has the not-so-specific denial from his current press secretary. Dana Perino said she's not sure exactly what McClellan is alleging, but whatever it is, Bush didn't do it. "The president has not and would not ask his spokespeople to pass on false information," she said.

Update: McClellan's publisher says the former White House press secretary didn't mean to suggest that the president lied to him about the role Libby and Rove played in outing Plame. "He told him something that wasn't true, but the president didn't know it wasn't true," Peter Osnos, the editor-in-chief of Public Affairs Books, tells Bloomberg News. "The president told him what he thought to be the case.'' Osnos offered no similar exoneration of Cheney.

Everybody already knows what occurred back in the fall of 2003 -- Dick Armitage leaked Valerie Plame's name.

Well, everybody except the writers at and readers of Salon.com apparently.

Mike Huckabee wants to take over the role of “MSM-approved Republican” from John McCain. He’s taken over many of McCain’s roles. For example, he has sold himself to the carbon trading lobby.

Does this Tim Grieve think we are stupid, or can't read? Richard Armitage confessed to telling Robert Nivak about Valerie Plame. Mind you, he did not "out" Plame, because her husband had aleady done that in Who's Who. People have to be REALLHY stupid to take this stuff seriously. Sadly, a few million Americans take this type of garbage seriously. And Salon pumps out this sort of trash regularly. Didn't Salon go broke a few years ago? What are they, a way to separate fools and their money, like Air America, and the Gore and Kerry campaigns?

Come to think of it, yet another way to waste millions of dollars from liberals on a losing cause, is actually a GOOD thing. Think Hillary Clinton. Think Barrack Obama. Think John Edwards.

They were discussing this on Hardball? I can't believe it.

It would be interesting to examine the brains of people like Chrissy who claim there was scandalous behavior by the administration, as opposed to the dirty trick perpetrated by the CIA, to see if they really believe it themselves.

Mike doesn't know that the whole case lives or dies on one item ~ the occupational status of Valerie Plame.

There are a number of reasons to believe the law in question didn't apply to her.

A FREEPER came up with material on foreign websites concerning Russian, Ukrainian and Eastern European Jewish genealogy. Valerie seemed to do that as a hobby. Her stuff was all over those websites ~ and for periods extending back into the days when she could possibly be an agent covered by the law.

Obviously Valerie didn't care, why should anyone else.

"W" is going to have to let some of our guys know the truth pretty soon.

Shouldn't Huckabee read the entire quote before he says anything? And does anyone see any reference to Plame in this quote?

WHAT HAPPENED

Inside the Bush White House and What's Wrong with Washington

SCOTT MCCLELLAN

SUMMARY | EXCERPT

The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. So I stood at the White house briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.

There was one problem. It was not true.

I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice President, the President's chief of staff, and the President himself.

I'm with you, Sam. Obviously Schmuckabee has no loyalty to the party which over the decades made him into a bigger man than he really is.

How vile to throw darts at President and Party just before a critical general election. If he's unhappy about the Plame affair, he should keep his grits hole shut and not add to the cacaphony.

And watch out, he won't get the nomination and he'll be bitter and vengeful.....mark my words. We haven't heard the last of him and that other loose cannon, Ron Paul, either.

I put Huckabee on a par with that Judas son of the Dog. He's an angry man under that smiling Christian demeanor.

Which party's nomination is Huckabee seeking again? I don't remember.

It's incredible how some trivial machinations by an insignificant anti-Bush partisan working in the CIA headquarters was morphed into a supposedly major scandal...just cotton candy compared to a real scandal. Unfortunately 95% of the historians writing histories of the Bush administration will be leftists ready to take all negative allegations against Bush and those loyal to him at face value.

But these are serious allegations. They deserve to be thoroughly examined, investigated, and the truth brought to the American people.”

Scott McClellan Didn't Out Bush for High Crimes and Misdemeanors, Cheney Did

It is a testament to the persistent tacit alliance of the corporate media with the Republican Party (to ensure favorable big media regulations, tax cuts, and anti-trust favors) that damage done to the national security of the United States -- authorized in all likelihood by the President of the United States and most certainly orchestrated by the Vice-President of the United States -- is either roundly ignored or dismissed as insignificant.

Scott McClellan did not pen a rogue statement in his forthcoming book. What he said is entirely consistent with the information disclosed at the Libby trial, and even – ironically – with the defensive strategy of Libby’s own legal team, which was to position "Scooter" as a fall guy for the White House.

That may have, indeed, been the sole true assertion made on behalf of Mr. Libby.

I most definately agree that this should be FULLY investigated. I, for one, would like to know why the prosecution of Libby continued AFTER the prosecutor KNEW the truth about the “outing” of an over-paid secretary and DC party girl. I would LOVE to know WHY nothing was done when her “boy toy” returned from his “ambassadorial” “fact-finding” “mission” and chose to write his OPINIONS about Iraq in the NYT rather than give the president the info first. I would LOVE to know WHY nothing was done when these two worthless human beings lied, under oath, before Congress. Finally, I would like to know WHY there was no investigation done about the prosecutor and his abuses of his office.

I guess this will happen AFTER the investigations into just what Berger stole from the archives...

Heck, Senator Incitatus (Clintigula’s horse) continues to lie daily and the MSM never, ever holds her accountable for her lapses in ethics, or her lapses in memory. FBI Files, Craig Livingstone, Cattle Futures, and on and on.

The thought of the Treasonous, Rapist, Impeached President returning to the WH is a pox that should not even be considered. That his horse even is under consideration is mind boggling.

I think Huckabee is as “harmless as that other little fuzzball” Rush Limbaugh. He is just trying to win some cauci and primaries against great odds, even trying to win over some liberals. I think his “socialism” would have been confined to AR where “socialistic” practices are expected. As for being loyal to GWB, that has never been a two-way street.
