:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Calculating the Risks in Pakistan

A small group of U.S. military experts and intelligence officials convened in Washington for a classified war game last year, exploring strategies for securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal if the country's political institutions and military safeguards began to fall apart.

The secret exercise — conducted without official sponsorship from any government agency, apparently due to the sensitivity of its subject — was one of several such games the U.S. government has conducted in recent years examining various options and scenarios for Pakistan's nuclear weapons: How many troops might be required for a military intervention in Pakistan? Could Pakistani nuclear bunkers be isolated by saturating the surrounding areas with tens of thousands of high-powered mines, dropped from the air and packed with anti-tank and anti-personnel munitions? Or might such a move only worsen the security of Pakistan's arsenal?

Judge upholds Muslim scholar's US entry ban

A U.S. federal judge on Thursday upheld a government decision to refuse a prominent Swiss Muslim entry into the United States, saying the question of denying visas was best left to the authorities.

The United States had revoked the visa of Tariq Ramadan, an academic at Britain's Oxford University and a vocal critic of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and its support of Israel.

The State Department initially gave no reason, but later said Ramadan had been barred under a provision of the USA Patriot Act that bars anyone who endorses terrorism.

Iranian cleric says non-conforming women should be put to death

A top Muslim cleric in Iran says Iranian women who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf should be put to death.

The Adnkronos Press Agency says Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani says — "Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die. I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive. These women and their husbands and their fathers must die."

Group slamming Savage has ties to radical Muslims

The Hate Hurts America Interfaith and Community Coalition (HHA), headed by CAIR-Orlando Executive Director Sabiha Khan, sprang into the public spotlight recently by pushing for a boycott of radio shock jock Michael Savage by his sponsors.

Formed in the wake of comments by Savage on his nationally syndicated “Savage Nation” radio program that were critical of Muslims and terror apologists at CAIR, the HHA called upon companies “to withdraw their advertisements from the program as a concrete demonstration of support for the American traditions of religious and cultural tolerance and mutual respect.”

The objective of such action, according to the organization’s Web site, is to prevent hate-filled words from entering public discourse because they “can and do lead to violent actions.”

But can Khan or a CAIR-connected coalition really qualify as a moral authority on this topic? While one may not condone what Savage said, Khan is certainly in no position to comment on deterring hate speech.

As spokeswoman for the Los Angeles chapter of CAIR from late 2001-06, Khan worked hand-in-hand with Hussam Ayloush, the chapter’s executive director, to defend hatemongers — most notably radical cleric Wagdy Ghoneim.

Ghoneim, a native of Egypt, came to the attention of immigration officials in North America and Europe as a result of his repeated calls for violent jihad against Jews, and active participation with terror-connected organizations.

“Palestine will not be liberated by speeches and peaceful means, but through jihad,” Ghoneim said at a 1997 Muslim Arab Youth Association conference. “The Jews are scared by the word ‘jihad’ ... We have to prepare ourselves for jihad against Jews and to liberate Aqsa Masjid. This is a must whether we accept it or not.”

“China taps into U.S. spy operations”
By Bill Gertz
December 21, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “China’s intelligence service gained access to a secret National Security Agency listening post in Hawaii through a Chinese-language translation service, according to U.S. intelligence officials.

The spy penetration was discovered several years ago as part of a major counterintelligence probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) that revealed an extensive program by China’s spy service to steal codes and other electronic intelligence secrets, and to recruit military and civilian personnel with access to them.”

“Mosque bomb kills ‘at least 50’”
LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “It was the second attempt on his life since April, when a suicide bomber blew himself up just a few feet away from Sherpao during a political rally there, injuring him and killing at least 28 people.

Police told CNN they were not sure whether the blast was the result of a suicide attack or a bomb. But they believe Sherpao was the target because he supervised operations against militants in the tribal areas of Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province.

The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber inside a mosque, as people were gathering for religious observances of Eid al-Adha. The Muslim holy period coincides with the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.”

Uranium Traces Found on N. Korean Tubes
Washington Post ^ | December 21, 2007 | By Glenn Kessler
Posted on 12/21/2007 2:51:34 AM PST by notes2005

U.S. scientists have discovered traces of enriched uranium on smelted aluminum tubing provided by North Korea, apparently contradicting Pyongyang’s denial that it had a clandestine nuclear program, according to U.S. and diplomatic sources.

The United States has long pointed to North Korea’s acquisition of thousands of aluminum tubes as evidence of such a program, saying the tubes could be used as the outer casing for centrifuges needed to spin hot uranium gas into the fuel for nuclear weapons. North Korea has denied that contention and, as part of a declaration on its nuclear programs due by the end of the year, recently provided the United States with a small sample to demonstrate that the tubes were used for conventional purposes.

The discovery of the uranium traces has been closely held by senior U.S. officials concerned that disclosure would expose intelligence methods and complicate the diplomatic process. North Korea has steadfastly refused to open up about its past practices, simply asserting that it is not engaged in inappropriate activities. However, the uranium finding will force U.S. negotiators to demand a detailed explanation from Pyongyang.

Police on alert in Brussels to prevent terror attack
12/21/2007

BRUSSELS -- Police and security services are on a heightened state of alert to prevent a terror attack in Brussels, local media reported Friday.

This follows reports that Belgian police on Thursday night detained fourteen people who were suspected of planning to free by force Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi, who is currently serving a ten-year-prison sentence for planning an attack on a military base which houses American soldiers in Belgium.

Police and security services have been placed on a heightened state of alert to thwart any terror attacks, said the media reports. However, Belgium's Interior Ministry has reassured the population that there is no reason to panic.

Saudi nabs militants planning attacks during haj
December 22, 2007

RIYADH - Saudi security forces have arrested al Qaeda militants suspected of planning to mount attacks during the current Muslim haj pilgrimage, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said on Friday. The television quoted an unnamed security official as saying the suspects aimed to cause "security confusion" during the pilgrimage, in which more than 2 million Muslims are taking part.

They were arrested in various cities in the kingdom days before the start of the pilgrimage on Monday, the official was quoted as saying. The report did not say how many were being held.

Egyptian 'explosive expert' not our member - MILF
12/21/2007

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Friday said that an Egyptian national who was arrested on suspicion of having ties with al-Qaeda is not a member of the separatist group. Radio reports quoted MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu as denying even knowing Mohamad Said, who was arrested early Wednesday morning after police found a number of explosive devices and bomb-making materials inside his apartment in Cotabato City.

Kabalu also said they have no idea how Said, known by his aliases Mohamad Sayed and Abu Hussien, got a hold of a copy of the MILF booklet that police recovered from him. Aside from the booklet, several explosive devices were also confiscated from the Egyptian national. But Said denied owning any of the seized items.

He is currently being subjected to a tactical investigation by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Police, reports said. Police also said they have yet to determine whether Said has any links to the Jema’ah Islamiyah, the al-Qaeda arm in Southeast Asia. Said reportedly told investigators that he previously stayed in the country for two years before going back to his homeland. He also claimed that when the arrest happened, he has just gone back from Egypt to teach Islam in Cotabato City.

Khan offered nukes to Syrians
December 21, 2007

VIENNA: Syria received a letter purportedly written by the head of the same nuclear black market that supplied Iran and Libya with its atomic technology but did not respond, President Bashar Assad said in comments published yesterday.

Mr Assad's comments appeared to be the first time that a senior Syrian official had linked the country to Abdul Qadeer Khan, the top Pakistani scientist who was exposed in 2004 as the head of an international black market in nuclear technology.

Iran: Europe will become a Muslim continent, says Khamenei's spokesman
21 Dec. 2007

Tehran - Europe will eventually become a Muslim continent, according to a representative of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. "In a dozen years, Europe will be an Islamic continent," said Rasul Jalilzadeh on Friday as he was speaking to the basiji, a voluntary organisation in the capital Tehran. "The Islamisation of the European continent is imminent and this step favours the arrival of the Mahdi," he said, referring to the 12th imam of Shiite Islam.

Shiites believe that the Imam Mahdi, who disppeared as an adolescent, will return to bring an end to chaos and bring universal justice. Rasul Jalilzadeh believes that "the Islamisation of Europe is one of the consequences of the Islamic revolution in Iran" in that "the messages and values that this revolution has transmitted to the Europeans, to convince them "to abandon their current faiths and convert to Shiite Islam."

FEDEX truck hijacked in New York City

Armed assailants hijacked a FedEx delivery truck Friday when they assaulted the driver at a traffic signal in downtown New York City.

Police said the assailants forced the driver into another vehicle and he was later found about 1:30 a.m. in Brooklyn, WNBC-TV in New York reported Friday.

Two assailants threatened the driver, who was en route to the FedEx facility in Newark, N.J., police told the television station.

Neither the driver nor the police had knowledge of the 18-wheel delivery truck's cargo.

Hundreds of live snakes found on plane

VIETNAMESE airport officials have discovered a cargo of 700 live snakes on a Thai Airways flight from Indonesia.

"The snakes were alive when they were found in the cargo," a quarantine officer at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport said.

"Seven hundred snakes were later destroyed when no one claimed ownership."

The reptiles were found on December 19 in a container that arrived on flight TG 682 from Indonesia.

“Robbers Steal FedEx Truck, Parcels in NY”

NEW YORK (AP) —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The driver, who was found later in Brooklyn, wasn’t hurt, police and FedEx Corp. spokesman Steve Barber said. The truck — an 18-wheeler and one of the biggest FedEx vehicles — was later found abandoned in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn around 5:30 a.m. There was cargo inside, officials said.

Jim McCluskey, a spokesman for the Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx, said no packages were missing and that those in the truck would soon be sent out.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Halfway across the country, a freight train bound for Chicago derailed Friday, spilling several train cars loaded with UPS packages in Indiana.

Hundreds of UPS workers were sent to the site to load packages onto trailers and get them back on their way, company spokesman James Vickery said.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The freight train, which was traveling from Secaucus, N.J., was hauling 39 UPS containers. The UPS tracking system will allow customers to track their packages online and be notified whether their parcel was thrown off the train, Vickery said.”

Troops Kill 1, Capture 24 in Iraq

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2007 – Iraqi and coalition forces killed one suspected terrorist and detained 24 others in Iraq over the past two days, military officials said.

During operations to disrupt criminal networks this morning, coalition forces captured two suspected “special groups” leaders and detained three other suspects near Baghdad in the Mashru and Kadhimiya areas. Intelligence led ground forces to the target area south of Baghdad in Mashru, where they captured one criminal group leader and detained another suspected criminal.

The targeted individual reportedly trained criminal splinter group members to attack coalition and Iraqi forces with explosively formed penetrators and improvised explosive devices, military officials said. He reportedly associated with several other senior criminal leaders responsible for attacks on troops.

In an operation west of Baghdad in Kadhimiya, ground forces captured a senior criminal group leader and detained two other suspected criminals. The alleged senior special groups leader is believed to be responsible for supplying materials for use in explosively formed penetrator attacks. He reportedly controlled a group of criminal cells operating in Baghdad and is linked to several other senior-level criminal leaders involved in attacks on coalition forces, military officials said.

“Coalition forces continue to conduct operations designed to diminish the facilitation of terrorist activities Iraq,” said Navy Capt. Vic Beck, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.

During coordinated operations in Baghdad yesterday and today, troops detained two wanted individuals in al Qaeda’s media and propaganda network. The suspects also reportedly are associates of a suspected terrorist who was detained by coalition forces Dec. 9 for his role in the same network. At the targeted site, the ground force discovered caches of media and propaganda materials. Ground forces also detained four suspected terrorists.

During an operation in Tarmiyah today, coalition forces detained a wanted individual believed to be closely associated with a leader in the northern Baghdad al Qaeda network. The wanted individual reportedly is associated with senior terrorists in the network, which is responsible for car-bomb and IED attacks, as well as extortion, intimidation, weapons trafficking and facilitating foreign terrorists. In addition to the wanted individual, the ground force detained one suspected terrorist.

Coalition forces in Kirkuk conducted an operation targeting an alleged al Qaeda cell leader today. The targeted individual reportedly is involved in planning and executing terrorist operations in the province and was associated with Abu Harith, the former leader of the Kirkuk terrorist network who was killed during a coalition operation Nov. 21.

During the operation, an armed man emerged from the targeted building and displayed hostile behavior. Coalition forces engaged and killed him. During the engagement, an explosion occurred, indicating the individual may have been armed with explosive material. Troops detained one suspected terrorist on site.

In Mosul, coalition forces detained seven suspected terrorists today while targeting an individual believed to be involved in an illegal terrorist court system. The suspect also is responsible for facilitating the storage and maintenance of weapons caches in the area, military officials said.

During an operation south of Hawijah yesterday, coalition troops detained three suspects while targeting associates of the terrorist network in Kirkuk.

“Al Qaeda in Iraq remains a threat to the Iraqi people,” said Army Maj. Winfield Danielson, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “Iraqi and coalition forces are working together to dismantle their terrorist networks and bring stability to Iraq.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20071222-01
December 22, 2007

Iraqi Police uncover major weapons cache
Multi-National Division – North

KIRKUK, Iraq – Iraqi Police uncovered a major weapons cache in the Kirkuk province of Iraq Dec. 18. The discovery was made during a series of pre-dawn raids at suspected cache sites.

Iraqi Police led the operation in the town of Ruwadah, approximately 25 miles west of Kirkuk City. The operation was named “Kura Azakan” (The Brave Men) by General Sarhadt, outer Hawijah district police chief, because Coalition Forces and Iraqi Police had not been in the area recently and because the Iraqi Police had gone in without Coalition presence.

More than 300 Iraqi Police officers from Dibbis, Sagaron, Tarkalan, Altun Kopri and Schawn took part in the operation, which was conducted using 32 Iraqi Police vehicles. At one of the sites, Iraqi Police discovered one of the largest caches in recent Kirkuk province history.

Included in the cache were approximately: 65 grenades, 83 rocket propelled grenades, 1,800 fuses, 1,060 mortar rounds, 250 various explosive projectiles, 3,000 small-arms rounds, 1,400 20 mm cannon rounds, and more than 1,000 pounds of explosives and improvised explosive device-making material.

Coalition Forces from Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment and Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, along with explosives ordnance disposal team members, were called in to safely dispose of the ordnance. In an extensive combined operation, Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces conducted a 13-hour clearing operation which resulted in the destruction of the more than 7 tons of deadly ordnance.

“This is another example of the growing capacity of the Iraqi Security Forces to conduct independent operations and was a result of a lot of hard work from brave Iraqis,” said Col. David Pashcal, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division commander. “The discovery and destruction of this cache will seriously disrupt the enemy’s ability to conduct attacks on innocent Iraqi citizens, Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces.”

Press Release A071222a
December 22, 2007

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda propaganda and finance operations, six suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained two wanted individuals and four additional suspects during operations today targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq.

During an operation in Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq associate allegedly involved in facilitating finances for the terrorist network in Arab Jabour. Reports indicate the wanted individual is associated with senior terrorists in the network responsible for numerous attacks against Coalition forces.

The Arab Jabour network is operating in a degraded state following recent Coalition forces success in the region, to include an operation Dec. 15 that led to the detention of another wanted individual suspected of being involved in the network (see MNF-I press release A071215a, “Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda operations; four terrorists killed, 18 detained,” dated Dec. 15, 2007).

Also in the capital city, Coalition forces captured a wanted individual believed to be involved in al-Qaeda in Iraq media and propaganda operations. The wanted individual is allegedly a close associate of three suspects, also involved in al-Qaeda media operations, who were detained by Coalition forces during operations last week.

Farther north in Mosul, four suspected terrorists were detained during an operation targeting an associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating in the city.

“We are continuing to take the fight to al-Qaeda,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Our operations are diminishing their ability to attack the Iraqi people and the security forces that protect them.”
