WASHINGTON (AP) - Hispanics are returning to the Democratic Party after several years of drifting toward the Republicans, with many saying Bush administration policies have been harmful to their community, a poll showed Thursday.
By 57 percent to 23 percent, more Hispanic registered voters say they favor Democrats than Republicans, according to a survey by the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center.
That 34 percentage point Democratic edge - which includes people who said they lean toward either party - has grown since July 2006, when a Pew poll measured a 21 point difference. Then, 49 percent of registered Hispanic voters said they favored Democrats and 28 percent chose Republicans.
In 1999 before President Bush's election, more Hispanics favored Democrats than Republicans by 58 percent to 25 percent - about the same margin as in the current poll.
When the former Texas governor became president in 2001, Republicans saw an opportunity to woo Hispanics to the GOP. But as the 2008 presidential campaign has heated up, immigration has become a major issue and GOP candidates have competed over who could concoct the toughest plan for cracking down on illegal immigration.
The survey found that among Hispanic registered voters:
_Forty-one percent said Bush administration policies have been harmful to Hispanics, 16 percent said they have been helpful and 33 percent said they have not had much impact.
_Forty-four percent said Democrats have more concern for Hispanics, 8 percent chose Republicans and another 41 percent said there is no difference.
_Forty-one percent said Democrats do a better job of handling illegal immigration, 14 percent named the GOP and 26 percent said neither.
Younger Hispanics are slightly more inclined than older ones to be Democrats, while those with higher incomes lean more toward the GOP than those with lower earnings, the poll showed.
Using September 2007 Census Bureau data and projecting from 2004 voting behavior, Pew estimated there would be 8.6 million Hispanic voters next year - 1 million more than in 2004.
While that would be a small portion of the overall expected vote, Pew estimated that Hispanics comprise a large enough share of eligible voters to affect the outcome in four states where Bush prevailed in 2004 by 5 percentage points or fewer: New Mexico, Florida, Colorado and Nevada.
Among Hispanics who are registered Democrats, 59 percent said they want Hillary Rodham Clinton to be their party's presidential candidate, followed by 15 percent who prefer Barack Obama. Among Hispanic Republicans, Rudy Giuliani leads Fred Thompson, 35 percent to 13 percent.
The survey involved telephone interviews with 2,003 randomly chosen Hispanics conducted from Oct. 3 through Nov. 9. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. It included 843 Hispanic registered voters, for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 points.
The “nonpartisan” Pew Hispanic Center?
Don’t make me laugh.
Of course, folks making less money will vote to take from those making more money.
Darn, you mean those 30 million poor we allowed to come through and shower with free benefits want more of the same? Why didn’t we see this coming? Too bad for the Constitution, that we let law be delved out into 2 realms, with one group exempt. Oh well, maybe someday freedom and liberty will return, it sure was a nice experiment, that old U.S. of A.
The “drift” is only of concern if it’s among legit voters. Oops, forgot...the dhimmicrats are working tirelessly to leave no illegal vote uncounted. Legal military votes? Make them illegal...but don’t count them.
This is such B.S. Hispanics are as ticked off at illegal immigrants as anyone else. Whose jobs do the illegals take more often than not? It’s legalized hispanics who lose their jobs to folks willing to do it for less.
This massive wave of illegal immigration started in the early 1990s. Long term hispanics don’t like what’s going on. They came here willing to work and make their own destiny. And those today come here to get as much for free as they can.
There is a big difference, and hispanics are angry that newcomers aren’t showing the same hard work ethic they did.
So less than half of those surveyed are even registered to vote, let alone inclined to vote. Why don't they just use tea leaves?
The last poll I saw still had 70% of hispanics preferring Dems.
Is this a real poll?
The percentage of Hispanics that vote is small, so catering to Hispanics is not exactly a bug concern for the GOP....the pct is something like 6% to 10% of eligible Hispanic voters
Pandering to the illegal alien lobby (which Pew Hspanic is trying to do w this poll) to get Hispanic votes is a bad idea
“...survey by the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center.”
If it isn’t “Partisan” why is it titled “Pew HISPANIC Center”?
Some of the Hispanics may be new to this country. they may not yet realize that Democrats in power means cross-dressing days in school. If the sissies that run the Democratic party think that they are a perfect match for the macho Hispanic culture, they will soon find out otherwise.
They never left the democrat party, regardless of all the pandering Bush did toward them. He was the best friend the illegal aliens had, but they turned on him anyway. I hope GWB has learned you can't buy loyalty.
Here's how they felt about our president during their marches. None of it was flattering.
Pander some more, Mr. President! This is what the invasion thinks of you!
The pubbies need to find out why so many white males sat out last fall.
“roast beef” alert! (brown on the outside, red on the inside)
For the life of me I can't understand why *legal* Hispanics wouldn't favor a tough stance on immigration, considering what they went through to become legal.
...it’s all about the bennies. who will give us more “free” stuff.
If it isnt Partisan why is it titled Pew HISPANIC Center?
Is there a Hispanic party?
Breaking up the family
Abortion on demand
Dissolving our Constitutional Rights
Affirmative Action (ie. racism)
Failing public schools (no school choice)
The GOP had better grow some and start delineate the difference between them and the dems otherwise there is no reason to vote for a Republican - its like comparing bad to worse.
The fact they found it necessary to use the word “non partisan” says something.
“Hispanics are returning to the Democratic Party after several years of drifting toward the Republicans,”....Drift on!
Bush appointed Alberto Gonzalez as AG and supported the most lenient immigration policy for illegals. How has that hurt the Hisp community? Unless they oppose illegal immigration.
you forgot the /sarc> tag! (hopefully) :)
pew is evilspeak for dim.
“Race is thicker than water”
Bush and the Republican leadership doubled down on a losing bet.
Had Bush deigned to work with fellow Republicans and secured the borders first, Americans would have allowed, and Congress would have passed a guest worker plan and maybe even a little amnesty. A win-win strategy that would have pleased his base voters with secure borders and pleased Hispanics with a possible legal status.
But Bush and Rove went with the lose-lose strategy and angered both the Republican voting base and Hispanics.
Rove you magnificent... never mind.
Roger that. This poll has all the credibility of a Bazooka Joe bubble gum comic.
I still maintain there should be a constitutional ammendment that those people that get money from any govt institution are forbidden from voting while they receive the money and for XX years afterward.
In other words, racism is alive and well amongst Hispanic voters.
After all, if illegals were overwhelmingly from Asia, Africa, Europe, why would they be moving to the open-borders Democrats?
To ask the question is to answer it.
Ohh, but give it a generation. Even without any new amnesty, differential birth rates alone are setting the stage for “interesting” political shifts. They may not plan out economic policy long-term, but political policy (maximizing the time spent benefiting from quid quo pro - borne of course of largess derived from the taxpayer) is another matter.
The Pew Center has eight different subordiante centers focusing on various elements of American life-one of which is the Hispanic center. The centers are primarily engaged in research-driven polling.
The Pew Center is privately funded, strictly non-partisan, and is one of the most respected sources of info in American social sciences by almost all serious players in the field, whether conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat, or none of the above.
You don’t have to be partisan to engage in research about Hispanics. Pew also has a sub-center on religious Americans-does that make them Republican?
“Forty-one percent said Bush administration policies have been harmful to Hispanics”
This alone proves that Bush and Rove were idiots on amnesty. Bush has been the most Hispanic friendly (and even illegal alien friendly) President in recent memory....and what did it get him? Nothing.....NADA.
Poor Hispanics will vote Democratic anyway, and even some of the middle class that feels “picked on” will as well. Of course, they feel picked on because Racist Amerika won’t just stand by while Mexico exports its poverty problem to the United States.
The republicans stand for hard work, personal responsibility, law and order. The DemocRATS offer, anarchy, welfare, and giving up American sovereignty. This will allow hispanics to takeover the southwest and California. Of course they will vote RAT.
If anything ever was worth repeating, your thought is at the top of the list.
Of course they lean towards Democrats. People with their hands out usually do want Democrats. Who better than Democrats to take away from those who toil and hand out to those who will vote for them.
Democrats always posing as the most beneficent by giving away other people’s money.
Good! I hope this motivates the Democrats to vocally embrace Hispanic “immigrants’” rights, straight through to the ‘08 elections.
“For the life of me I can’t understand why *legal* Hispanics wouldn’t favor a tough stance on immigration, considering what they went through to become legal.”
The ones that played by the rules are pretty sympathetic to the GOP. But you have to remember that 3 million hispanics in this country got their citizenship through Ronald Reagan’s 1986 amnesty bill.....that means 3 million “legal” Hispanics got here illegaly. Of course they oppose tough border enforcement and vote for Democrats.
That's hilarious. Bush has basically given the citizens of Mexico virtually everything they want from the U.S. -- even sacrificed a couple of Border Patrol agents to them.
But they aren't satisfied. See, in their countries, El Patron can dole out any favors he wants -- and does. That's the way business is done. You pay your bribe (La Mordida) and El Patron makes sure your Nana gets her new shoes. But not until the cash is in his pocket...
The Hispanics are convinced that Jorge is holding out on them. He's El Presidente de Los Estados Unidos! He can do anything! The fact that massive voter outrage has shut him down everytime he tried to twist arms in the Senate is lost on them. Can't he just send some Policia to tell those peons to shut up and do what they are told? Tio Hugo in Venezuela does it that way....Why can't Boosh?
So that's the gratitude Junior gets for basically laying down for them. They sneer at him and walk -- "we didn't get enough cash. We're going home".
Lay down with dogs, as the saying goes...
Our country is lost. Were done.
What a joke out of 2,003 there were only 843 registered voters ?
Democrats.. party of free stuff.
“Younger Hispanics are slightly more inclined than older ones to be Democrats, while those with higher incomes lean more toward the GOP than those with lower earnings, the poll showed.”
Surprise, Surprise! Lower income Hispanics tend to favor Democrats. And that is why the Jorge/Rove amnesty scheme to pander to Hispanics has always been a half-witted, ham-handed disaster that would have significantly increased the number of Democrat voters, since such a large percentage of illegals who would be given amnesty are poor and less educated.
And if this amnesty deal had never been raised and pushed by Jorge, this divisive and damaging internal fight among Republicans would not have occurred, and fewer Hispanics would have been alienated from the Republican party.
A stupid venture by Jorge and Rove that has damaged the party. Hopefully it can recover some in 2008.
“So less than half of those surveyed are even registered to vote, let alone inclined to vote. Why don’t they just use tea leaves?”
And how many illegals did the sample include? We’re fed all these Hispanic opinion polls and they don’t, and probably couldn’t, separate citizens and legal residents from illegal aliens.
And that probably goes for all stats, including that Hispanics are 14% of the population now. Wonder what percentage of legal residents and citizens they are? Something less than 14%, I’d bet.
“The pubbies need to find out why so many white males sat out last fall.”
They do. The pandering to illegals is a non-starter for many. The same will happen if the GOP chooses a pro-illegal candidate
