(Baltimore) MTA looks at racial role in city bus attack
Baltimore Sun ^ | 7 December 2007 | Michael Dresser

Posted on 12/07/2007 6:51:44 AM PST by Moose4

Maryland Transit Administration Police said last night that they have found no evidence that the severe beating of a 26-year-old woman on a city bus this week was provoked and that they are investigating the attack as a possible racially motivated hate crime.

Nine middle school students have been charged as juveniles with aggravated assault and destruction of property in the Tuesday afternoon attack on a woman and her male companion on the No. 27 bus.

Police said yesterday that they have determined that there were two additional victims in the case - a third passenger and the bus operator who came to his assistance.

Investigators were examining video from a surveillance camera on the bus but had not completed their analysis.

Well...there's your hate crime right there.

I was thinking about the great hospitals, and wondering if they will ever think of picking up and going outside the city limits. Hopkins the hospital, or the college? (I think you mean hospital, as the college is just above 39th.) Hopkins’ area is still not fantastic. Neither is UM’s. I wouldn’t blame them all for picking up and moving to the county, before they get dragged down by the ghettoes.

My big issue is with the unspoken assumption that use of the “N-word” justifies a violent response. This has become quite accepted in our society. It’s wrong. The appropriate response to words you dislike is more words, not violence.

Exactly. We no longer assume that a victim of rape is "asking for it" if she wears a short skirt or refuses to have sex after a man has taken her out on a date. Why should the "n-word" or any other word or words for that matter justify violence?

A large part of the problem is that young blacks are taught they are the ultimate victims, and therefore anything they do in response to any real or perceived, current or past slight is justified. In the end, victimhood strips them of their humanity by taking away their free will and accountability. There are those who profit by such poisonous hate, and they do not have to live with the fallout.

This neighborhood is just SW of the college. I wouldn’t go there at night but during the day, no problem. Of course, after hearing this story, I would avoid times of day when school is letting out. :-)

Bus Attack A Hate Crime Or Provoked By Victim?
Friday, December 07, 2007
WBAL Radio and The Associated Press

Maryland Transit Administration Police are investigating Tuesday’s attack aboard a Baltimore bus as a hate crime.

Twenty-six-year-old Sarah Kreager suffered broken facial bones and other injuries after she was punched, kicked and dragged off the bus by nine middle school students. A man with Kreager, Troy Ellis, was also beaten.

Kreager and Ellis are white and the students are black.

Transit police say they have found no evidence that the attack was provoked. They continue to examine video from a surveillance camera on the bus.

But some City middle school students are disputing the police version of this week’s assault of a woman on an MTA bus.

The Examiner is reporting that some Poole Middle School students who were on the Number 27 bus at around 3 on Tuesday say the 26-year-old woman started the fight and used the “N” word.

The students say the woman and her boyfriend started the fight that left the woman with broken bones in her left eye socket and other injuries to her head.

One of students who rides that bus says the woman used the “N” word and punched one of the students riding the bus.

But that flies in the face of what the woman told MTA police.

The students are charged with aggravated assault and destruction of property. Police say the teens could face additional charges. Police have identified two additional victims, a third passenger and the bus driver.

Baltimore is no better or worse than any big city.

Baltimore is worse that San Francisco and Seattle in this regard.

Man you must be new to this...they always claim that, they will have no proof and the media will let it pass believing the young thugs because they are black.

Anybody heard who put up the noose at Cornell? Eventhough the police have the video and know who did it they wont say...like most of these type of incidents it is often the perps who stage it in order to inflame the idiots and racists (LaRaza, NAACP, LaMecha etc...) into demanding more racist programs.

Interesting. But please note there are only 9 reviews - 4 viewable. 2 of those do indicate “violence”, but the others are more about what kind of education they’re getting. And we don’t know if those are isolated problems or really rampant.

BTW, seeing the pix of the school, I think it’s quite beautiful (”outdated”, as the student said).

Hampden area is not known at all for being violent; in fact that’s where the big neighborhood Christmas displays go on. That’s about the best I can say not knowing much else about this detail.

seems like they’re on the horns of a dilemma - the thugs are black - the victims are white - if it stopped there, no problem - NO HATE CRIME - but

it was a BLACK bus driver who called the police and then came to the aid of the WHITES and got himself attacked too...

what to do = what to do.

You know what would be interesting? If the spine of Maryland (MoCo, Howard, P.G., Baltimore City and County) joined up with the District and NoVa to form one state, the Eastern Shore went to the remaining “Red” portions of Virginia, and Western Maryland hooked up with Virginia or West Virginia.

A blue, blue state would be created and the District would get voting rights, but two red states would be saved.

It would never happen, but it would be an interesting alignment...

Most of the killings here are a result of business or romance complications.

That being said, I am concluding that the racial issue here was A component of the event not THE component.

When toughs of either races get into it (and any 26 year old chick riding an MTA bus in Hampden at 3:00 PM is tough , crazy or both) the N word or “Honkie” gets thrown around as a matter of escalating the confrontation.

And folks here LOVE to confront.

Just good ol B’more stuff

Go Ravens (haha)

No problem, people were just saying that I was making up the “N” word angle, when it was on the radio and website all morning. I know you can’t always believe what is on the radio and “words” are not justification of violence. I was just pointing out what some might say is an insight to what happened. WBAL cited witnesses, yes, they were black too. I know people from Hamden area and some ARE big time racist.

"A leading local transit advocate said yesterday that he generally agrees the MTA system is safe but said riders have come to dread certain bus runs called "trippers" that take city youths to and from school. The No. 27 bus on which Tuesday's assault occurred was such a run - with its starting point at the Poole school as classes let out.

"I don't feel unsafe on the buses. I feel uncomfortable on the trippers," said Ed Cohen, president of the Transit Riders Action Council. "The general view of riders who ever happen to board one of those trippers is that they've boarded a rolling hellhole."

Baltimore is no better or worse than any big city.

Baltimore had a murder rate of about 43/100,000 population in 2006. For comparison, the murder rate for Philadelphia and Wash. DC were in the mid 20's/100,000, and San Diego was around 5.4/100,000.

It’s worse than Houston. I think the problem is as much or more from riding the citybus as the neighborhood. I’ve only ridden the bus a few times here, but several of those times a bunch of middle schoolers have gotten on and made me very uncomfortable. And they weren’t even threatening me, just loud, tough looking, aggressive body language...

I think I can sense what happened. The kids were somewhat mildly harrassing this girl, telling her all the seats were taken, then she sat down anyway, and one of them probably said who does this white b!tch think she is, and then it was off to the races.

You keep repeating these bits of info, but not what’s in the Sun article right here that is currently the most recent:

“Greene said that at the time the incident reports were taken, no child reported any spitting or knife being pulled. Gavrilis said the operator hadn’t mentioned any provocation.”

Sounds to me that the media were screwing it up again in a breathless attempt to “get it out 1st”, instead of getting it right. Later reports say the PARENTS claimed these things - and this note about the incident reports would seem to bolster that.
