The old adage is wrong. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not some silly wives tale.

For these people are those who most need help, and they are also the ones most likely to attract danger.

Yes, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to help our fellow man. But that's become the main focus of so many churches today; and it's a straw man. God's commission to His church on earth was to go forth and baptizing the world into His family of believers; not being a good Samaritan. Being that good Samaritan is part of it, sure, but it's not to be the focus.

Once we lose sight of God's purpose through us, we begin substituting our will for His. And where does that lead us?

“At church, one should not feel the need for security.”

Tell that to all the little altar-boys.

I loved this quote that I found on another story on this topic. Runs counter to all laws and philosophies that are present in modern society:

“Asked if she felt like a hero, Ms Assam said: ‘I wasn’t just going to wait for him to do further damage.’”

The irony is, under some states’ laws, you are COMPELLED to retreat in the face of deadly force and “wait for further damage” before the State recognizes your right to use deadly force. When someone pulls a gun on you, at best, you are to stand there, and, if possible, run away. Only if neither of those are an option does the State “authorize” you to use deadly force.

You know, when states authorize you to shoot first at anyone you consider to be a deadly threat, the liberals call that the “Dirty Harry/Make My Day” law.

Well, I call an obligation to retreat the “Politely offer the criminal the first shot” rule. Or, the “Ensure your own death rule”. Or, “Give the Advantage to the Criminal” rule. Or, “Protect-A-Thug” rule. Or, “Libs Love To Give Criminals The Benefit Of The Doubt” rule.

Basically, here’s a person who just broke into your house and showed a weapon. The Libs now want you to disregard all that when judging whether or not he means you harm. Because he hasn’t HARMED you yet, you see. In the eyes of the law, with regard to self defense, he’s done NOTHING that should even raise your eyebrows.

Of course, the ones who make such laws have armed guards to protect them. And, they’ve convinced the American public that it’s noble to behave this way, and wrong to protect yourself and others as Jeanne Assam did.

Thanks, Libs! You’ve trained a large number of Americans to believe that a good and just society is one that arms it’s criminals, provides safe areas for them to shoot large numbers of the law-abiding without hinderance, and that proper citizens will lay down and surrender when threatened. In other words, you’ve taught society to behave exactly backwards.

Jeanne Assam is a hero. She probably saved hundreds of lives. The killer might have figured nobody in a church was armed and he could easily escape.

Larry King had her on his show and she came across as professional and dignified. She is also attractive.

Jeanne Assam had just been on a three day fast, sounds like she was focusing on her soul and salvation, more than her aim.

It is usually wrongly interpreted to mean; "Hey, there's two of us here now so Jesus is here now!"

I never implied that. I said that when two or more congregate in God's name He will be there also (..."defines one's communion with God"). As you quote: "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

I see no misinterpretation. And I'm not taking any offense.

If that is the reason this church encouraged selected volunteers to help with security, then I guess they were 100% correct in forecasting the need for it.

I'd agree.

Look, I’m addressing the issue of security in churches in general. I’m not picking out one individual or church organization. I don’t go to that church, I’m not near that church. But from what I’ve read here from posters, I have to wonder just where that organization’s focus is.

""I give the credit to God. And I say that very humbly. God was with me and the whole time I was behind cover -- this has got to be God, because of the firepower that [the gunman] had vs. what I had," Assam said. "I did not run away and I didn't think for a minute to run away, I just knew that I was given the assignment to end this before it got too much worse. I just prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide me." "

Be not that far from me, for trouble is near; haste Thee to help me. BLAM!

Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight. BLAM!

My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me. BLAM!

O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. BLAM!

You are absolutely right, the other Hero

Larry Bourbonnais, a combat-tested Vietnam veteran, said it was the bravest thing he's ever seen.

Bourbonnais, who was among those shot by a gunman Sunday at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, watched as a security guard, later identified as Jeanne Assam, calmly returned fire and killed the shooter.

Bourbonnais, 59, had just finished a hamburger in the cafeteria on the sprawling church campus when he heard gunfire, he recalled.

He headed in the direction of the shots as frightened people ran past him looking to escape to safety.

“Where’s the shooter? Where’s the shooter?” Bourbonnais kept yelling, he recalled.
Near an entryway in the church, Bourbonnais came upon the gunman and an armed male church security guard, who was there with his gun drawn but not firing, he said.

Bourbonnais said he pleaded with the armed guard to give him his weapon. “Give me your handgun. I’ve been in combat, and I’m going to take this guy out,” Bourbonnais recalled telling the guard.

“He kept yelling, ‘Get behind me! Get behind me!’ He wouldn’t hand me his weapon, but he wouldn’t do anything.”

There was an additional armed security guard there, another man, who also didn’t fire, Bourbonnais said.

Bourbonnais yelled at the gunman to draw his attention, he said.

“First, I called him ‘Coward,’ then I called him ‘S—head’ “ Bourbonnais said. “I probably shouldn’t have been saying that in church.”

That’s when the shooter pointed one of his guns at Bourbonnais and fired, he said. Bourbonnais ducked behind a hollow, decorative pillar and was hit in the arm by a bullet and fragments of the pillar.

At about that moment, Assam, 42, turned a corner with a drawn handgun, walked toward the gunman and yelled “Surrender!” Bourbonnais said.

Luke 22:36

He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

God's not talking about making a fashion statement, here. He's calling on us to see to our safety, likely because He knew we would be the target of attacks.

The Breaking news should be that , when Larry Bourbonnais, too the 9mm gun from the killer’s dead hands, he found that the 9mm gun was jammed, a round was stuck... in Larry’s own words. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2007/dec/11/in-his-own-words-larry-bourbonnais/

Seems Jeanne Assam did have God on her side.
