Can someone tell me why so many FReepers are rallying around Fred Thompson rather than, say, Tom Tancredo?

Are you referring to something other than Tancredo's deer-in-the-headlights facial expressions and inability to complete a sentence without stuttering?

This negative stuff isn’t helping Fred. Today’s Rasmussen poll:

“Huckabee attracts support from 23% of Likely Republican Primary voters nationwide and Rudy Giuliani earns the vote from 19%. The frontrunners are followed by Mitt Romney at 15%, John McCain at 12%, and Fred Thompson at 9% (see recent daily numbers).”

Even after the debate his numbers are low. Let us see how this plays out over the next days.

Yeah, you’re right. I guess I should know by now that being “slick” (homey, earthy, etc.) is more important than being conservative.

We apologize for pointing out that in 2002 Huckabee wrote Pres. Bush a letter asking him to lift the Cuban embargo. It’s easy to see how Huckabee might have missed the finer points of a 40-year embargo. While he obviously knew enough about the embargo to ask that it be lifted, Huckabee clearly didn’t know enough to ask that it not be lifted. So for that, we’re sorry.

Unfortunately, no one who speaks like President Bush is going to be elected this time around. People would like someone who can speak clearly and directly. I really like Tom Tancredo (and Duncan Hunter) but they are non-entities at this point. I believe both will be bowing out of the race come next month.

You prefer a guy that raises taxes and panders to illegals?

BTW: On your home page, you really need to point to a newer poll. ( I apologize for bringing that up)

ROFL!!!!!

It has been a long time since we had a President with a sense of humor.

I like Pres. Bush, but I can't imagine him skewering an opponent like that.

Over the other guy who does is no different? Yes.

Fred is fine and I will back him if he is the nominee but he is a lightweight reading position papers written by others. He has peaked and that is painfully obvious.

(Thanks BTW I’ll update the homepage)

Bzzzzt!
Results for the Presidential Tracking Poll are obtained through nightly telephone interviews and reported on a four-day rolling average basis.
Thanks for playing!

Incorrect. He is very appealing to those who are not politically inclined and therefore uninformed, which I dare say is the great majority.

650 nationwide likely republican primary voters tell you this? Do you even bother to read the internal numbers and questions on polls?

Look, it’s is simple. Do you want a man who consistently favors federalism, is pro-life, pro-gun, anti-tax increases and understands the international climate we face in a time of war? If so then your candidate must be Fred Thompson.
If you don’t want such a candidate, what are you doing on FR?

Furthermore, “negative” attacks are actually proven to be very effective campaign tools when they stick to numbers and strict legislative comparisons. The only time negative attacks backfire is when they turn personal and go after a candidate’s marriage, children, or religion - eg “Don’t Mormons believe Jesus and the devil are brothers?”
