Thompson: More Surprises in Store
ABCNews ^ | December 17, 2007 | Christine Byun

About three months after his initial campaign kick-off, Republican candidate Fred Thompson returned to Iowa with a re-invigorated pitch in his final appeal to the early voting state.

Thompson -- who will spend 15 days in Iowa leading up to the Jan. 3 caucuses -- warned the country is "one successful terrorist plan away from nuclear attack."

Barely pausing to clear his throat, the former Tennessee Senator boomed, "it's not time for on-the-job training," a familiar jab on this year's campaign trail. Thompson believes he has the leadership skills to lead the country in national security issues.

"When the time comes where our worst enemy in the world is sitting across the table thinking about what he can do to the United States of America ... Who do you want sitting across the table representing us?" Thompson asked, a question which staffers say will be one of the campaign's driving themes during his statewide tour.

He also vowed to fight against a "left-wing, big government, high taxing, weak-on-national security Democratic Party."

"We're not going to turn over the keys to the country over to that outfit," Thompson said, accusing the Democrats of "licking its chops ... so they can lead us down the road to a welfare state."

Thompson drew upon his latest debate performance, when he refused to raise his hand in a vote when candidates were asked about climate change.

"How are you going to stand up to the leaders of Iran and North Korea if you can't stand up to an overbearing moderator?" Thompson asked, drawing laughs and applause from the crowd of 75 supporters.

Thompson subtly carved lines of distinction between him and his higher-polling rivals, and used his fresh endorsement from Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, to pledge his commitment to campaigning in this final push.

"There were some other folks from another campaign standing around the wall, waiting for their guy to be named and he wasn't," Thompson said, alluding to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's staff. "They were kind of shocked that I got the endorsement ... But I won't rub it in -- I will just say this: This ain't the last surprise you're gonna get, folks."

“Why is it that the Freepers who never trust what the MSM has to say about anything are the same ones who believe everything that the MSM has to say about Fred being lazy, needing to get some fire, blah, blah, blah?”

“Thank you for saying that! The MSM does not like Fred!”

That is right. The MSM does not like Fred and do not want to even have to mention his name. The reason is they do not want Fred to be the nominee because he would beat ANY DEM he faces. Not only that, he would help the Republican Party gain control of the House and Senate! The MSM is going to HAVE to mention Fred after January 3rd! GO FRED!

“I hope one of those surprises is spelled N. R. A.”

Me too! I wonder why the NRA would not endorse during the primary? We certainly know they would endorse “whomever” the Republican nominee is against any DEM nominee. What we need is to see their endorsement NOW among the Republican candidates...BEFORE JAN.3rd! GO FRED!

But I have never detected energy or enthusiasm from the Thompson team. I think he's trudging toward the finish line, while others are sprinting

The MSM has brainwashed you. You are viewing Thompson thru their prism. Everytime you see him, you think, "no fire in the belly." I guess the MSM could repeatedly mention a hairy mole on Hillary's lip, so that everytime you saw her, you would immediately focus on her lip. Marketing people do it all the time to push their product. It is called branding.

Once Fred gets the nomination, they’ll have no choice but to talk about him.

Yes, some of the surprises will include that Fred doesn’t believe the federal government has the power to codify the social conservative agenda.

Hardly a surprise, considering he's stated that repeatedly. Fortunately, if we stripped the United States Code down to it's bare bones, 99.9% of the statutes eliminated would be liberal items. Federalism is the moral enemy of liberalism.

No, the NRA didn’t endorse anyone in 92 or 96. There wasn’t a Republican nominee they could support. As you know, we lost.

The NRA would NEVER endorse Romney or Rooty, ever!

They would lose half their membership in one day.

That is the reason they cited that they may have to endorse a candidate in the primary season. They know that we could get stuck with an anti-gun nominee, and we would lose.

No Republican can win a national election ( POTUS ) without gun-issue voters and NRA support.

Before the RATS went nuts and adopted an anti-gun agenda they had a lock on the south and much of the midwest.
It wasn’t that long ago.

The “Reagan Democrats” was a term that was used for the Michigan/ Midwest union voters that switched over to Republican. The gun issue was the largest reason for that.

Huge chunks of swing voters decide based on that single issue, gun rights. Anti-gun Republicans can’t win.

Rooty and Romney supporters can cry and whine, stamp their little feet, until they are blue in the face but it wont change that FACT!

Absolutely. It’s really funny because when I use another candidate’s record against them (Huck/Mitt) I’m accused of “smearing”......LOL They’re like the liberals they claim to detest.

Actually, I am one of the few lemmings on FR that doesn’t hang onto Rush’s every word. I am a self thinker.

If you really knew what you were talking about, you would know that I am not committed to any candidate yet.

Federalism is the moral enemy of liberalism.

And its "mortal" enemy as well. Your version is just as applicable, however.

Just looked this guy up.

7 term Congressman from the 1st District in Georgia. Significant votes here:

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/k000220/key-votes/

Staunch conservative Republican. Strong votes on the War on Terror. Joined other GOP Congressmen in introducing bills to reform earmark process.

Born in Bryan, TX. Spent most of his life in Athens, GA.
Degree in Economics from the Univ of GA. Strong pro-Life positions.

His Wikipedia entry is already updated to show endorsement of Governor Mitt Romney Dec 18, 2007. That was fast.

Rush has done more for Conservatism than anyone else this side of Reagan. He has a track record of being accurate to 98.7%. I am certain that he pales when compared to a brilliant independent thinker like yourself.

Anyone expecting perfection from any person we elect has set themselves up for big disappointment. I know going in that there will times that I will be at odds with Fred’s opinions or actions. I simply believe that, as a presidential package, he is the best conservative choice and that we have a good chance of him still being the same flawed but decent and principled man after the election.

I’m convinced Fred Thompson loves our country and I’m convinced he is not seeking the Presidency out of a lust for power, fame, or money. These are difficult times and we have no idea what the nation and the next President will face, but I would be more confident with Fred Thompson in charge than any other front runner on either side. I hope others come to the same conclusion before they cast their votes.

As for surprises, I’m with Fred. I think there are more good ones to come.
