Tancredo Scuttle (Tom Tancredo drops out tomorrow, endorsement up-in-the-air)
The Atlantic ^ | December 19, 2007 | Marc Ambinder

Posted on 12/19/2007 1:18:07 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The scuttle is:

Rep. Tom Tancredo will drop out of the presidential race tomorrow and endorse either Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson.... neither of those candidates know who, just yet.

But the scuttle is probably wrong. Tancredo has been critical of all his opponents, and, given his issue's saliency, he does not need to endorse. His party sounds like him, now, on immigration.

A retiring Congressman does not usually endorse until the writing is clear on the wall and the nomination is in hand. Then he endorses and hopes for a job offer if the nominee wins.

The biggest states are irredeemably Blue.

Unless you think Rudy as Veep could bring in NY ?

The only national figures from CA are Arnold who is ineligible and Hunter who doesn’t balance the ticket according to your view.

What does that leave ?

FL has Jeb, but a Bush on the ticket would turn away independents.

TX ? Maybe Ron Paul as Veep ?

Hi Kellis91789.

Agreed on the biggest states. Rudy won’t take the Veep position, his ego is too big. Who is this Ron Paul you mention? Does he have a last name?

I don’t have a sense of who Fred would tap for VP. But it won’t be someone just like himself. Reagan balanced his ticket geographically, politically and experience-wise. Bush I was an excellent VP choice for Reagan.

I imagine Fred would do something similar.

It doesn’t matter to me. If someone I support drops out...that candidate doesn’t own me. I’ll decide for myself who to switch my support to.

VP? Not hardly. If I’m going with the long shot , it’s going to be for first place.

“Well, Bush wasn’t really worried about picking up Wyoming when he added Cheney to the ticket.”

Correct, Cheney was picked to add experience, and to balance George’s “compassionate” (moderate) conservatism. In the Republican party, a moderate presidential candidate picks a conserative VP (Quayle, Cheney) while a conservative candidate picks a moderate (Bush I, picked by Reagan). People have forgotten that Bush didn’t run as a strong conservative, which explains why they are so upset when he takes moderate positions. They created a Bush in their minds that was a fantasy.

I don’t think he will, but I wish he would just so I could watch the mitt-haters all tell me how liberal and a sellout he is.

I don't think the Flip Romney lovers are liberal and sellouts. I just think they're dupes who are easily led by a slick con man. If Tanc endorses Flip, he'll fit into that category as well.

It’s about time some of these minor leaguers dropped out and left the race to the frontrunners.

Exactly: I’ll loose respect for Tancredo if he endorses a RINO (Romney, McCain, Guiliani, et all)!

Endorse Hunter!!

I think that was unproductive.

If you "go rude" on us like that, we are liable to "go rude" on you in return. And nobody benefits from that.

However, we won't shirk from it.

Absolutely. We need a Bob Dole in the worst way. Going the establishment GOP way with a "mainstream" big player is the only way. The past shows us that.

All these minor patriots who love their country and express the real outrage of the people these days, and what not, should just get out of the way for the Big Boys.

thompson is honest..if he wasn’t he’d have said he’d support the HRA and the FMA since clearly that would have helped him politically.

as for Hunter, give me one good reason tanc would support a guy who polled less then him. he might as well stay in the race in that instance.

I like Hunter, but I’m tired of this foolishness.

BTW, I’ll believe the endorsement when I see it. If he’s going to endorse someone, Thompson would be the logical choice at this point. But tancredo isn’t a guy I claim to be able to predict.

BTW, I’m sad he’s leaving office. I’ve had my differences with him over some of his rhetoric (ex.bombing Mecca), but given the pols are STILL selling us out (stripping the fence) unless we get the right person in the W.H. who else is going to fight them the way tanc did. Sure, it killed his chance to advance in leadership but he’s a large part of the reason we don’t (yet) have amnesty.

I like Congressman Hunter, but
***That seems to be a standard talking point for the average courage-free conservative.

.

According to Intrade, the winner of the December 12th GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

Tancredo is an excellent congressman. He has always been my second choice.

This guy has been solid since day one. I mean it.

Rarely do you find anyone such as Tom who is unwavering in his commitment on the border.

I am so glad he has been in the race, and he has kept the heat on everyone to have ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION as the top issue, and I hope it stays the top issue regardless what Tancredo does tomorrow. At any rate, my hearty salute goes out to all the Tancredo folks for supporting their man even when the MSM ignores them, or Bushbots insult with "he can't win" kind of crap I am sick of hearing about. I know how it feels.

I’m supporting Duncan Hunter but it’s funny...when I take those issues polls, he comes out on top of my list, or close to it.
