In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.

President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

I'm all for any technology advancing, but this is is nothing more than jack-booted authoritarian horseshit. Any time these sub-simian cretins find a way to stick their beaks into the essence of our existence, they do it. I have seen nothing under Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution that authorizes these bottom-feeders to ban Jack Squat.

Mandating it is stupid—I agree—but you are way off base on the ‘dangers’ of CFLs, especially since by the end of the year, new bulbs coming out will have about 1 / 200th of that of an old thermometer and will reduce more mercury from coal plants than has in them. I’ve also posted 2 stories (and can provide dozens more if you want) that show that story in Maine is bunk.

Just wait until the old people who aren’t paying attention to this go out and try to by a light bulb on January 1, 2014. This is going to lead to a major firestorm before it’s all done.

Hell, my wife insisted on picking one of those out and it can hardly clean sand off a plastic dinner plate if you put it in it...

According to news stories, GE was the only big company who opposed the law, on grounds of consumer sovereignty. Maybe they’re smart enough to smell the backlash coming.

Thanks for the info. I had not heard that.

LEDs, once the price drops, will be far better.

But will they be any good in light fixtures that only accept 60 watts? because the next step is already in the process - mandating light fixtures/lamps that can only take up to 60 watts

Does flourescent gas hurt the ozone ?

The prius does not get that great gas mileage in the real world and the prius heater does not work when in the ‘pc’ electric mode.

And...

idiot politicans.

this is the STATES mandate on how to dispose of these bulbs = when this was revealed in the Ellsworth American story, they denied it to cover butt - but here is the proof in the pudding. Particularly read the instructions under "What if I accidentally break a fluorescent bulb in my home?"

http://www.maine.gov/dep/rwm/homeowner/fluorescent.htm

So who lied?

refute the state of Maine's OWN SITE particularly the part where they tell you what to do if you break one -

http://www.maine.gov/dep/rwm/homeowner/fluorescent.htm

and I very much doubt this was made up by Maine - but what the national rules are on this -

“President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle.”

Perfect example of industry helping to spread a lie in order to sell their product. Just like Dupont and fluorocarbons damaging the Ozone.

BTW, I live here - I'm in the newspaper business here - I might have a little more info on it - just maybe.,

But read here what the State's rules are on what to do if you break one - and don't think this isn't already in your state or will be...

Who here has read, or even seen, Subtitle B of the Energy Independence and Security Act? It's not a blanket ban on incandescent lights. It establishes efficiency requirements for general service lamps, while excluding 22 other categories of lights. The light in your oven or fridge? It's safe. The infrared lamp you use to keep your herps toasty? It's safe. The bug light that zaps your skeeters? Safe. Your "plant lights?" Safe, but the DEA wants to have a word with you. The spotlight you've got focused on the painting of grandma? They're not gonna touch it. The 3-way in your living room? It's safe. Anything under ~35 watts or over ~150 watts? Safe.

There's more details in the bill; the one I like best is a clause through which certain excluded bulb types fall under a stricter regulatory regime if they exceed DOE-modeled sales for one year. So if you all do as you're threatening and start buying incandescents by the truckload, you're just going to increase the scope of the regulation and make it harder for those of us who don't hoard light bulbs.

“MERCURY in them and have to be DISPOSED of ONLY”

I just drove 18 miles round-trip to dispose of 10 fluorescent tubes at the haz waste facility. I have two more trips to go before I get rid of my many years of tubes. (They only take 10 per day per person!) 18 miles ~ 1 gallon of gas at $3.16/gal plus the time and aggravation. (Especially when I know most folks just toss them in the garbage anyway - which is probably fine too as they end up in a sealed landfill).

Guess we are all reverting back to candles and fireplaces for warmth and light.

Are you kidding me??!? You know what kind of soot and particulates those things give off? They'll be banned too, before you know it.
