MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

Thu Dec 20 2007 10:56:57 ET

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

MORE

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about jounalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

If it turns out that this is the sex scandal to which the Los Angeles Times has previously alluded, I think it will be lights-out for Sen. McCain’s presidential campaign.

ROTFLMAO! McCain, often the target of FReepers believing "he's too OLD" for the job, now comes under scrutiny for his sex life...now, if the lobbyist had something to do with the "male enhancement or Viagra/Cialis drug industry" you might have something.

Dear meandog,

“ROTFLMAO! McCain, often the target of FReepers believing ‘he’s too OLD’ for the job, now comes under scrutiny for his sex life...”

Lots of folks who might not quite be up to the job of President of the United States may still be up to getting it on with an attractive woman. At least, I hope I will be when I'm that old. ;-)

I guess that you’re unhappy about the speculation that it’s possible that this could be, in part, sex scandal. Like I said previously, only time will tell. Given Sen. McCain’s history of running around on his first wife, it’s not entirely out of the question that that’s part of this story.

If there is something really bad out there about him, the Media will destroy him.

I think the MSM has given up on him, thus the reduction in "Maverick McCain" coverage.

And you are right, they have been playing him up the past 8 years in order to totally destroy him had he gotten the Repub. nomination........

Um, no. I believe it's been pretty much established that the L.A. Times story was the one involving Hillary! and Huma, which still hasn't seen the light of day.

This one sounds more like an influence-peddling issue, not a sex scandal.

I think McCain COULD possibly get a newspaper to pull a story for him.

He’s spent so much time sucking up to the drive-by media on everything from illegals to guns to campaign finance reform.

Quite a track record.

I heard he left his first wife because she was dying from something.

The “heiress” looks young enough to be his duaghter.

By the way, I think Coors is the Nadir of Bottled beer - it tastes like bubbly water. Hate the stuff.

It seems like just yesterday, McQueeg was the New York Times’ golden boy.

It’s so sad to see a good friendship go bad. Truly heartbreaking.

Right, well, I presume you believe in Santa Claus too? Or that Mitt, Rudy, Huck, and FRed, really did long to do their duty and join the military during Vietnam and were soo-o-o-o-o disappointed that they got defered by ministry chores, schools and high draft lottery numbers? Or, they, really are going to round up all those illegals and ship 'em back to Mexico, small business labor be damned!

Gee, this couldn’t have anything to do with getting Hillary elected? Or giving Guiliani a primary come-from-behind victory?
