NEW YORK Earlier this week the Chicago Tribune announced it was hiking its street price from 50 cents to 75 cents. Now The Washington Post reveals that it will raise its newsstand price from 35 cents to 50 cents beginning with editions of Dec. 31.
An article in the Post explains that it is "responding to the paper's decline in circulation and advertising revenue.
Home delivery price for The Post and the Sunday newsstand price will not change.
The previous newsstand price increase came in 2001.
"For a decade, the median daily price for U.S. newspapers has been 50 cents, according to the Newspaper Association of America," the Post article observes. "According to the group's 2005 statistics, 81 percent of papers charged 50 cents per daily copy, with 6 percent charging 35 cents. In the past two years, a few newspapers have raised their single-copy price from 50 cents to 75 cents."
High-priced toilet paper.
Na na na na, Na na na na, Heh heh heh Goodbye.
Raise prices in the face of declining demand. Okey-dokey.
Couldn’t even give it away at 35 cents a copy?
The Washington Times is still just a quarter.
That’s gonna help their bottom line.
NOT
But the Washington Times never made a profit in its 25 year history.

Ooops... did you say WT?... “Never mind” :)
Another sign that the MSM doesn’t understand market economics. When the demand for your product is dropping, it is usually not a good idea to raise prices.
If newspaper subscription revenue worked the same way ‘rats think taxation works, they could plug their shortfall simply by increasing the price to a few dollars per copy. Presto! Back to the same old earnings.
i wish they’d raise it to five bucks.
The Buffalo News has been fifty cents for over a decade.
My exact reaction. The liberal solution would be to raise it to at least $2 for the people in business clothes like suits etc., and $1 for people in jeans and t-shirts. And the homeless would get it for free of course.
“High-priced toilet paper.”
But, but, but.....
How could that be (whining)???
After all, the WP is home of “legendary” “journalists” Woodward and Bernstein and their selfless service to all of humanity via the absolutely unparalleled newsprint triumph of the aeons (trumpet fanfare):
WATERGATE
In unrelated news, a 50% price surge has recently been observed on compost sold by area gardening centers.
Anyone who pays 35 cents for the WP will pay 50 cents for it.
Women and minorities hardest hit.
