Low-Key Thompson Stumbles Toward Finish Line
ABC ^ | 1/2/08 | Rick Klein

Two days before the Iowa caucuses — day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour — former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.

Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.

(snip)

Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

That is what is so cool. That may well happen.

You know, this is another reason why you can’t get started late in the primary season: by December in IA and NH, it can be near impossible to even get around, so your campaigning has to be “in the can” by then.

The starting date had nothing to do with it. The MSM are shutting him out because he won't dance to their tune.

IOW he refuses to put on the media clown act.

.the media's dream candidate

Didn’t you get into trouble a while back for garbage like this?

Quite a few times with JimRob, suspended, reinstated, and yet he never learns.

You mean all the ones leading him . . . significantly?

Rush Limbaugh: "it's the candidate's job to get noticed."

One way you get noticed is, like Rudy did, you buy a full page ad vs. Moveon.org in the NY Times, or have a big speech on religion at the Bush Library. Hmmm, these take $$$. Money is raised through organizations, which take a LOT of time to form.

A better way to put it then, is that "Fred shut out the MSM for so long they forgot about him."

BTW, it's such a silly notion that Fred isn't taking off because of "the media," if for no other reason than Huckabee, who came out of nowhere, or Ron Paul, who is raising all sorts of money without ANY media attention.

“and with supporters like pissant...he just turns me off from even considering duncan.”

Ditto. He’s like an average Paulistinian on the tact meter.

It’s interesting to see some of the ongoing excuses for why Fred isn’t doing well, despite the fact that Huck had ZERO media coverage early, and Ron Paul has never had any media coverage and has out-fund-raised Fred many times over.

Yes, he did. Pissant has been carrying on like this since June. He seems to be holding Thompson responsible for the fact that Hunter hasn’t gained traction. The fact is that Hunter has a very poor campaign organization, he hasn’t managed to draw the media’s attention to himself as a candidate, and he’s now going down without a fight.
In the meantime, pissant is going to badmouth Thompson to the end, as though it might help Hunter. BTW, pissant assured us repeatedly that Thompson was his “2nd choice.” (Check out his June-July-August posts for proof.)

I have been a political junkie for more than 30 years, even before I was old enough to vote. Starting a campaign nearly 2 years prior to the vote is starting far too early in my opinion.

I’m not talking about discussing said campaign, starting that nearly 4 years prior to the vote is a bit much, I’m talking about starting the campaign.

BTW - not all are leading him, nor are all those leading doing so significantly. Polls are actually useless at this stage of the game.

When I read that, it reminded me of the sanctimonious senator in the movie “The Aviator”, trying to destroy Howard Hughes with charges of spending money on a plane that never flew.

Not quite. I hold conservatives responsible for supporting the best conservative. I do not blame Thompson for running. Every senator thinks he is presidential material.

Except the Hunter PING list keeps growing. Some folks understand, others don’t. It’s the way the world works.

That’s how it looks. I wonder if the writers strike played a part in this as well. Fred had a pretty good chance of being on Leno again, and IMO that would have really helped him get some traction. You know softened his delivery up in a casual setting. I’ve seen Fred do those late night talk show things and be really good, but none of that comes across in his straight on campaign spots.

I think that “kook paul” has more money in the bank than most of our candidates, including Huckabee AND Thompson.

Huckabee is now getting media attention because they wren’t able to pimp Guiliani enough. The MSM needs a candidate they can easily build up and then tear down. That’s Huckabee right now. That could easily change on Friday, just as they have dropped Guiliani, they can easily drop Huck.

The MSM has this attitude that THEY will determine the final candidates for both main parties.

Your opinion is so depressing to a student of American politics.

Sorry to depress you, but he isn't doing well in the polls. If he is still on the ballot when the primary in Kansas is conducted, I will vote for him. But it doesn't look good.

I've been spreading the word about Thompson in my little 'realm'. But like Thompson's own campaign, it doesn't seem to be gaining any traction.

Grow up and get a life would be my suggestion, but I know you are so full of your cutesy little self that you can't even begin to comprehend what I am talking about.

The only thing that gets pisswhat's attention is when Jim spanks it. But I think it really give it a little thrill.

Pizant, as a Hunter supporter your attacking Fred not only makes no sense, it diminishes the great candidate you do support. I know I am not alone on the Forum who think this and feel you are so tiresome.

I've said the same things about the attacks by Fred supporters against Mitt Romney. But people do what they will, regardless.
