Battle Over Possible Euthanasia of New York Teenager Gets Pro-Life Attention
Life News ^ | 1/1/08 | Steven Ertelt

Bronx, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The battle over the life and death of a teenage girl in New York has drawn the attention of pro-life advocates in recent days. The fight to save Javona Peters reminds some of the struggle of the Schindler family in Florida to save the life of Terri Schiavo, a beloved daughter and sibling whose former husband eventually took her life.

In this case, Peters' parents are disagreeing on whether or not to remove her feeding tube and take her life.

Peters fell into a coma in October while she had a routine medical procedure at Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors have pegged her as being in a persistent vegetative state, a medical diagnosis pro-life advocates dispute because so many patients have partially or fully recovered.

Peters' parents were never married and are estranged and have considered a medical malpractice suit against the hospital, according to a New York Daily News report.

But Janet Joseph and Leonard Peters are also feuding over Peters' care and have each filed separate requests to be given custody of their daughter. Peters has been opposed to removing the feeding tube but has wavered recently.

Edward Gersowitz, an attorney for Joseph, told the newspaper that "Because of her condition, she cannot make decisions for herself, and the court will have to appoint a guardian to make decisions for her."

As a teen, Peters doesn't have a living will or some other advanced directive providing guidelines for the type of medical treatment, or withdrawal, she favors.

The case has drawn the attention of the Schindler family, which sent out a notice about the case from its foundation, which helps disabled patients receive legal help and appropriate medical care.

Leading bioethics watchdog Wesley J. Smith has also commented on it and he says the PVS diagnosis seems "rushed" to him.

Smith says he sympathizes with the father and the pressure he is under to take Peters' life.

"We know that too often medical teams and social workers pressure and cajole for such outcomes," he said.

Smith draws comparisons to the case of Haleigh Poutre, a Massachusetts girl whom LifeNews.com reported was also declared PVS, but who has recovered from the abuse she suffered.

In that case, state government officials had ordered her feeding tube removed but she recovered from the PVS state shortly beforehand.

Oh..Canada, Spring is coming. Time to turn over a new leaf...

Thread by wagglebee.

OTTAWA, January 28, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Since the Supreme Court's Morgentaler decision in 1988, Canada remains the only civilized country in the world with no legal restraint on abortion.

Abortion advocates in and out of the medical profession continue to falsely claim a consensus on this open practice, yet polls repeatedly show that 2/3 of Canadians want some legal protection for the unborn child; the Morgentaler justices themselves stated the state's interest in this goal............

What a wonderful irony it is to have Dr. King as such a powerful advocate. Need we remind it was Fr. Pavone who was at Terri's side at her hour of death.

Thread by wagglebee.

STATEN ISLAND, NY, Jan. 28 /Christian Newswire/ -- Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and full-time Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life, has been named one of the Top Ten People of 2007 by Inside the Vatican magazine.

In naming Dr. King, the magazine called her "one of the leading pro-life voices in America and the world today." "I am humbled and honored by this recognition, but I give all glory to God who allows me to speak on behalf of His children who cannot speak for themselves," Dr. King said.

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, stated, "All of us at Priests for Life are proud to have Alveda on the team. Through her efforts we have made significant headway in assisting our African-American brothers and sisters to understand that the pro-life movement belongs to them as much as to anyone else. Now is the time for more African-American leadership in defense of the unborn."..............

Oh no! NARAL is telling these guys to shut up (Invoking St. FU as T'wit would say...)

Here we have Killary's "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the greatest killer of all, me or that B.O.?" And NARAL just hates to have it called what it is...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- NARAL president Nancy Keenan has had enough -- not of pro-life Americans educating the public about abortion's risks and dangers but of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama fighting each other. Since before Iowa voters went to their caucuses, the two have been going at it.

The debate started with Clinton attacking Obama on votes he case while he was a member of the Illinois legislature.

Clinton claims Obama did pro-abortion activists a disservice by voting "present" on several abortion-related bills, including one that would make sure babies who are born alive after a botched abortion get proper medical care.

Obama responded to the attack by saying he worked in concert with Illinois Planned Parenthood...............

Ping to Salvation comment on #128 of the link below to a thread by AFA-Michigan. Also, Salvation, note the earlier posts on this thread at the beginning of our today session here, starting at #316. One thing positive we can say about Mitt is that he did respond to Bobby Schindler when others didn't. Nevertheless, Bobby has endorsed Huckabee.

So, the lamestream media is blaming Terri Schiavo for Rudy's bad showing. How's that again? I thought the lamestream media said that everybody per their polls wanted her to be killed. The media's going to have it both ways.

Can't trust them.

Blame the victim and Governor Crist was on board for Terri's treatment and death. Crist is NOT PR0LIFE. Let us not forget how Crist participated in Terri's death.

Bobby Schindler must have missed the early debates where Huckabee was up there saying he wouldnt have intervened to help Terri Schiavo. I’m an indy so I’m going to vote for Amendment 1 taxes yes for tax relief.

It was Henry Ford who fulminated, "New Yorkers are different. They don't know what the hell the rest of the United States is!"

This is what I've thought about every New Yorker I've ever known. Their main interest is how something will impact NYC and they don't really seem to care how or if it affects the rest of the country.

Canberra, Australia (LifeNews.com) -- A British-based abortion business that operates abortion centers internationally admitted on Tuesday that women in Australia are getting pregnant and having abortions despite the use of birth control. Abortion advocates have long claimed that the advocating contraception is better than abortion limits in reducing abortion figures.

However, Marie Stopes International released a report Tuesday showing that more than half of women who have an unplanned pregnancy were using birth control at the time............

Full script of ad:

In the Florida debate, Governor Mitt Romney said:

"I can point to a very simple way to find out exactly where I stand, and that is look at my record as governor."

Really?

As governor, Mitt Romney issued an executive order forcing justices of the peace to perform homosexual weddings, or resign. Then he ordered marriage licenses changed to read “party A” and “party B” -- instead of “husband” and “wife.”

As governor, Romney appointed a board member of the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association to the bench, and appointed more Democrat judges than Republicans.

As governor, Romney authored and signed a mandatory heath insurance plan backed by Ted Kennedy -- including taxpayer-funded abortion on demand.

As governor, Romney overruled his own health department and forced Catholic hospitals to distribute the morning after abortion pill.

Homosexual marriage? Tax-funded abortions? Catholic hospital morning after pills? Homosexual activist judges? "Look at my record as governor."

Lauren Richardson...

This case calls for a hard look.

...................................

In a case with parallels to the 2005 uproar over Terri Schiavo, a Newark father is fighting a court order that could allow the removal of a feeding tube and end the life of his brain-damaged daughter.

"She's committed no crime and doesn't deserve to have this death imposed on her," said Randy Richardson, 52, on Wednesday.

According to court records, Lauren Marie Richardson, 23, is in a persistent vegetative state following a heroin overdose in August 2006. She was pregnant at the time and was kept alive at Christiana Hospital -- with feeding tubes and a breathing machine -- to allow her to give birth, which she successfully did in February 2007 to a healthy baby girl.

Late last week, a court awarded guardianship of Lauren Richardson to her mother, Edith Towers, who maintains her daughter did not wish to live this way and seeks to end artificial life support measures.

Randy Richardson has appealed a ruling by Delaware Court of Chancery Master Sam Glasscock III, putting any action on hold until the court's chancellor or a vice chancellor reviews the ruling, a process that will take at least three months.

Once that ruling is made, one side or the other may be able to appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court.

While the case is similar to the one involving Schiavo, legal experts said that matter did not set any precedents Delaware has to follow.

"That was a case about Florida law," said Drewry Fennell, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware.

~Snip~

Randy Richardson acknowledges that the daughter he knew before her brain injury is gone. But, he said, she is still alive and responds to him. He said she has made progress since her overdose -- she no longer needs a ventilator to breathe -- and given more time and therapy that can continue. "We just want to give her a chance," he said, adding he is not talking about extreme measures.

He also said she should be kept alive for the sake of her 1-year-old daughter, and is concerned Towers, his ex-wife, has not allowed Lauren and her child to see each other.

~Snip~

In his Jan. 24 decision, Glasscock wrote that he believes both parents were fit to be Lauren's guardian and both love her and wish for what is best for her. However, he found that testimony presented by Lauren's mother was "clear and convincing" about her wishes and the evidence "presented by Lauren's father does not change this conclusion."

As for Lauren herself, Glasscock wrote, "All the medical evidence supplied by the physicians -- by the independent neurologist and by Lauren's own doctors -- is in agreement: Lauren is not in a coma but is in a persistent vegetative state. A large portion of her brain was destroyed by a lack of oxygen following a heroin overdose of August 2006. She is unable to communicate or experience consciousness. Her continued existence is dependent upon tube feeding and hydration. ... No improvement in her condition can be expected.".....................

National health care reviewed on talk radio...

.............................

Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) January 31, 2008 -- Cumulus Radio announced today that Cary Hall's The Health Insurance Advocate Show, heard on Talk Radio 710 KCMO in Kansas City, Missouri, reached another all-time high in its fourth quarter 2007 Arbitron ratings among multiple demographics including Adults 18 years plus, Women 35 years plus, Men 35-64 years, Adults 25-54 years and Adults 35-64 years.

Hall says his radio program's growing popularity is the result of a motivated audience that wants to learn about and share healthcare related information and experiences in a stimulating and educational forum. www.thehealthinsuranceadvocate.com

During a live discussion about national healthcare, an English woman, now living in Kansas, called The Health Insurance Advocate Show to describe her father's battle with cancer within the context of the English socialized medical system. The man's wait for oncology treatment in England was more than 90 days.

~Snip~

Hall is also dismantling healthcare coverage myths such as the so-called 47 million Americans without health insurance.

"Countless numbers of people with family, individual, child only, temporary or COBRA policies and even transition plans like GAP plans, short term HIP, are not included as insured individuals in the US Census Bureau numbers and are therefore lumped in with the uninsured," says Hall.

"13 million illegal alien individuals, not American citizens, are included in the total number of individuals in the United States without health insurance coverage according to the United States Census Bureau. It's gotten to the point of the insane and people are just supposed to swallow the socialized medicine solution based on an incredible amount of misinformation." Hall also cites the quality and professionalism of his guests as a leading factor for the program's growth. Guests include state insurance commissioners, doctors, industry executives, optometrists, chiropractors, emergency medical professionals and even controversial figures like Bobby Schindler, brother of the late Terri Schiavo.................

The McCain Scrutiny featuring cuddly Charlie...

It is sickening enough to imagine Hillary or Barack at the helm, but this crew?????

Tuesday night, Gov. Crist stood (prominently) behind the victorious John McCain. How easy it is to imagine Gov. Crist at his side if Sen. McCain wins the Republican nomination and wants a running mate who, based on the Amendment 1 vote, might be able to deliver the largest swing state. And now, he could be on the ticket but know that he could return to Tallahassee.

Politically, this state no longer belongs to Jeb Bush. The former governor's people worked for Mitt Romney. According to exit polls, however, Gov. Crist's endorsement of Sen. McCain swayed many GOP voters. In 2006, then-candidate Crist famously blew off President Bush to appear with Sen. McCain, who endorsed him. Sen. McCain and Gov. Crist are conservatives, but both try to avoid the social issues that Gov. Bush exploited. Gov. Crist and Sen. McCain, for example, have criticized the Bush brothers' intervention in the Terri Schiavo case............

Charlie is the darling
