Need Phone Tech Advice Wireless Phone Plug?
purpleraine | 1-4-08 | self

I am trying to hook a phone line into my DirecTV TIVO box. I have no phone plug in that room or the two adjoining rooms. I don't want to run a wire open from the back rooms to the TIVO box.

Is there such a thing as a wireless phone plug. Anyone recommend a fix?

Hi, if you go to your neighborhood radio shack you can get a wireless phone extension, it’s basically two devices, one plugs into your tivo, the other into your phone jack, and it creates a wireless connection between the two devices so you can make phone calls from the Tivo. Both devices also need a power outlet.

I have used one for well over a year without any problems.

Radio Shack used to carry a device that would plug into your electrical outlet that would give you a phone line.

They may still carry it.

I don’t use a phone with my DirecTV TIVO box. It’s necessary only for PPV, which I don’t use...........

Yes. They've been on the market for years. I've never used one.

Here's a press release that seems on-point:

Looks like Dish Network sells one for $40.00

Depending on what model TiVO it is, you can also purchase a wireless networking adapter for it so it can use your existing wireless network and talk to the server directly instead of making phone calls.

Put a wireless router on your dsl internet for the house, go wireless on your computer and hook tivo directly on your network.

Tivo has a nice feature where you can download saved movies and show to your computer and watch them.

"I don’t use a phone with my DirecTV TiVo"

Don't you get frequent "nag messages" telling you to attach your TiVo to a phone line?

Can you still order PPV on DirecTV without it? I have been curious.

You can still order PPV. Just not through you remote. You just call the 800 number and order using your touch-tone phone. I wouldn’t reccommend attaching a phone-line to your DirectTV TIVO box. It is likely inclined to report a number of things about your viewing habits back to DirectTV.

I put my Tivo on the wireless adapter, and it's great. Now it gets schedule updates every hour, my Tivo server has scores of movies ready to view, and I can logon to Tivo central from any computer in the world and tell my Tivo to catch an upcoming recording. I can also view all my photos on my server, play all my MP3 music on the TV, listen to hundreds of streaming radio stations, and buy movie tickets. I expect Tivo will have a web browser soon, so I can FReep from bed.

If you have two Tivos on wireless, you can even view the movies stored on the other Tivo.

On Dish network you can order PPV over the phone (800 number) instead of directly through your box, but they charge you an extra dollar or something.

The real reason for the phone line connection is so they can collect your viewing information and upload it. Dish waives a "2nd TV" fee if you keep a phone line connected.

You can with dish. You just have to call an 800 number and order it from your home phone (has to match the number listed on your account).

They charge you a $1 premium but for as much as we do it it’s no big deal.

To be honest I’d rather pay the $1 than give them direct access to my box so they can download who knows what.

Thanx, the technician today didn’t know about wireless or he’s afraid to put himself out of business.

I have had a wireless (worthless) jack from Phonex (PX 211 D) that was supplied (for a fee) by an installer for Dish. The original did not work after the first day - too much static interference. The second was the same. As a result, I have to run a wire nightly and plug it in in my kitchen (25 feet).

With DirecTV/TiVo I only had to run the wire about every two weeks and it took about 5 minutes to do the update. I was going to run a new phone wire and fish it myself, but it's on an outside wall and the insulation is a pain.

The only obsticle between the sending and receiving units was the entertainment center itself. I used a phone and plugged it into the jack to see why it wasn't working - more static than between radio stations...
