Good news for Huckabee TRIBUNE-REVIEW Salena Zito Posted January 22, 2008 3 :00 PM

Democratic strategist John Lapp said, "On first blush, it would seem that (Mike) Huckabee is the main beneficiary of Fred Thompson's withdrawal. Huckabee, Thompson and, to a lesser degree, Mitt Romney were splintering the hard core, evangelical, social conservative vote. With Thompson's withdrawal, Huckabee has the chance to consolidate the far right. However, if Thompson endorses John McCain, that would be a nice conservative credential to have, considering McCain has been struggling with the mainline conservative Republican base."

Let’s hope the help comes too late. If all Fred Thompson managed to do was sink Mike Huckabee, we will have to be satisfied with that.

Frankly, I cannot fathom the mind of somebody who would go from supporting Thompson to supporting Huckabee. It just does not make any sense.

I would bet you that not one real fredhead will send any money to Huck. Who would?!

No benefit to Huck accept to stroke his worthless ego. Expect him and Judy to drop after Florida.

Hickabee is out of dough, though he has plenty of squirrel meat left.

Or they could always eat his fat sons.

Romney/Barbour: that would make the best of the bad situation we are in.

So far, I’ve seen Thompson’s withdraw as a boon to Romney, McCain, and Huckabee.

Just waiting for the Giuliani and RON PAUL! theories now, I guess.

Lapp is full of crap. Florida polls show McCain and Giuliani splitting the MODERATE vote, not the conservative vote.

Romney, Huck and Thompson are splitting the conservative vote. I don’t think Thompson voters are going to take a shining to Huckabee, so it will probably be a net win for Romney.

Nope. You’re wrong. Fred supporters were there not because of the one-liners, or a celebrity endorsement, or because we were fed pablum disguised as conservatism. We were there because Fred was a conservative. If you can find me 5 out 100 Fred supporters who are going to Huckabee, I’ll eat my shorts.

Bingo! Romney/Barbour ‘08! Fred’s dropping out helps Romney. Everyone knows the score now, Romney is the best bet.

This would be the reason that I hope he does endorse Romney. Don’t let even some of his supporters go to Huckabee (although I doubt that many of Fred’s supporters need to wait for an endorsement to avoid Huck).
