So far, Mitt Romney is winning overwhelming support, according to a poll at FreeRepublic.com, which had been a place where Fred Thompson's supporters congregated.

“Should we surrender the war on terror in exchange for smaller government?”

What war on terror?

Our borders are wide open.

We send Palestinian Fatah terrorists arms and money, and encourage them by pressuring Israel to give up half of Jerusalem - after we forced them out of Gaza, giving Hamas a huge victory. Now we pressure Israel to send fuel and food to Hamas who shoots missiles at them every day.

We continue to let thousands of military age male Muslim foreign exchange students into our country year after year.

We import Muslim somnali tribesmen as “refugees” by the boatload. Here in Phoenix, they all seem to work at the airport. I’m not kidding.

So much for, fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them here.

“I’m all for smaller government, but pacifism is the last thing that we need right now.”

What’s the alternative, borrow another $ trillion from China to use to fight their client, Iran? Then the dollar can fall further down the sinkhole and we’ll really lose.

That’s a serious question, btw. Not rhetorical.

We have national guard protecting Iraq’s border. Why not ours?

We aren’t taking the threat seriously now.

What Paul proposes is a net improvement. It took me a while to come to that conclusion, but I think the facts support it.

Well, now you can understand why. I don’t think he’s lying about it, because nobody has come forward and said he was lying about it.

As someone else explained, it’s not an indictment of Thompson. It just suggests that at the start, they were seeing if he could get support for VP, and then he caught fire, and decided he had the support to be President.

Anyway, if Carl knew that, it would have been a factor in everything he wrote and said about the campaign.

I was for Fred.

Huckabee is my 2nd choice.

Romney would be my 3rd choice.

McCain would be at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately, I believe he will be our next President. If it’s between him and Clinton/Obama I’ll put a bag, hold my nose and vote for the guy.

My guess is Fred will not endorse Mccain. And given their friendship, AND the fact that Fred endorsed McCain in 2000, that lack of endorsement will speak volumes about how Fred feels about McCain’s run for President.

If Fred thought McCain would be a good President, he’d endorse him — Fred’s got no other friends in the race.

But if Fred DID NOT think McCain would be a good President, Fred would withhold his endorsement. But out of friendship, Fred may not give that endorsement to anybody else either.

The conservatives came out hard in favor of Bush and he’s been nothing special although he did listen to them on some of their biggest issues.

That is wrong, Jorge is really special, he has raised back stabbing to a new art form. And sadly the person you support is the same way.

In looking at the current slate of remaining GOP candidates...it might be a good thing to be outside the Republican party mainstream...since Fred dropped out, I've been looking at Paul and he sounds more like Fred than any of the other guys.

Actually, I think it might work. People can also go to a different restaurant, cook at home, or just not eat.

More or less. But "just not eat" is not an option, unless you are willing to leave the country. If you don't vote, others will choose what you will eat for you.

I’m aware of the brief. Let’s see what the Court decides - at least we have a fighting chance. The point is that we must consider the appointments to the Court for situations such as this.

Appointments to the Court are arguably the most important issue in this election - considering the age of some justices.

Romney's record in MA says I am correct.... his state appointments were liberal judges.

Are you also forgetting ROMNEYCARE???? MANDATORY insurance and a fine on your tax return this year if you have not signed up -- and it has already overwhelmed the system and the waiting list to see a doctor is growing, just like in Europe where you wait two years for something as simple as a hearing test, There isn't a bit of difference in McCain or Romney and the democrats..

Thompson stated flatly during the campaign that he wasn’t interested in being Veep. Staffers say he was. Staffers are also looking for jobs right now, and getting their names in the press will help, so I take their breathless “inside baseball” statements for what they’re worth.

If Thompson wanted to be McCain’s Veep, he’d have endorsed McCain. I’m sure McCain asked for an endorsement after the SC primary. McCain needs conservatives onboard and may have thought that Thompson was a way to get them. The silence from Thompson has been deafening, and should stop all the unwarranted speculation.

Roberts
Alito
Lots of conservative federal judges
John Bolton
Tax cuts (with no support from a republican congress to make them permanent)
No new taxes
WOT

That’s what we got from Bush. Sorry it wasn’t everything you wanted but since when do you ever get that in the real world?

Since reading isn’t your strong point I guess I won’t bother addressing my support for Romney.

"I say Romney is a Reagan pro-choicer"

You say wrong. You poor deluded soul.

Reagan was never pro-choice. He was always pro-life. He went from no abortions except for the health of the mother to no abortions except for the life of the mother.

Romney supported a woman's "right" to choose to kill her child for any reason imaginable. That made Mitt pro-choice, while Reagan was always pro-life. It is amazing how well Romney has brainwashed some people.

He's also the only pro-lifer left in the race. See the tagline.

Yes, must be why that well known racist Walter Williams endorsed Paul, right? Also that other well known racist, I mean economist, Donald Luskin has endorsed him.

And that Norma McCovey, she must hate those pesky coloreds too. I mean she's only one of the leading proponents to end a practice that disproportionately kills black babies. Err, wait...

Generally speaking, RINOs don't become RINOs by one act or statement. Fred won't become a RINO, he'll only show that he may have been one, all along. May, have been one, all along.

While we've been sold on the "friendship" between Fred and McCain, we honestly don't know what the nature of that relationship is, colored not just by the Senate Club Members Only mentality, but the Senate Banking hearings of 1996, and what Fred knows about Mrs. Clinton. He clearly must have thought McCain wasn't sufficiently convervative, or as driven on issues, or something, or he wouldn't have run.

Fred's no longer the issue, "my friends," as Captain Queeg likes to say. Whether he's a RINO or not is sort of beside the point, isn't it?

For once I wish the poll had included the option “Ron Paul,” as well as the “Anyone but Ron Paul” option. I’m interested in how many of the “None of the above” category meant the only unlisted candidate still running, i.e. Paul, and how many were Freepers mentally writing in others, be it Fred, Duncan or someone more creative. I suspect the Paulians are less than half the “None of the above” but can’t prove that.

The most amazing result of the current polling is that “Anyone but Mitt” finished last with only 14 Freepers and 7 non-members taking that stand. There’s a lot of anti-Mitt postings on this board for so few votes. All I can guess is that many anti-Mitt types must also be anti-some one else and thus chose “None of the above” as the energy they display makes it unlikely they’d pass on voting here.

How is it that Huck gets beat up and Romney gets a free pass? At least Huck has been a consistent conservative on social issues and hasn’t flip flopped as much. Huck has only modified his stances, not completely changed them to get elected. I would hope that after all these years, Freepers would remain true to their convictions.

Romney is purty and has a big fat wallet. He's dreamy, dontcha know.

Your Hayley Barbour tagline reminds me of an expansion /alternate reality version of the game civilization III, where you got to defend the continental United States against invasion by Russia, Mexico, Cuba, Iraq and China. The default president in the scenario?

Alan Keyes.

It was a blast to play. Of course, I had to use lots of nuclear weapons in-country to win, the radioactive cleanup took me the remainder of the game and beyond.

I'm with you as far as the brokered convention, but there's another way to get there besides a write-in campaign, and that's by spreading the delegates around among various candidates. Since Mitt is presently the leader and seems likely to gain the most from Fred's having dropped out, that means voting for a candidate other than Mitt who has a real shot at denying him a particular state's delegates but no shot at all of winning the delegates needed to secure the nomination prior to the convention.

In my state, New York, that would mean Rudy.
