New bill would make it illegal for restaurants to serve the obese

FEBRUARY 1--Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, a copy of which you'll find below, is the brainchild of three members of the state's House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state's Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi's Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.

Bill will be "dead on arrival", but the message about where this country is going becomes more and more clear. Nice image of the text of the bill available at the link.

Mississippi is a nanny state on steroids. Ironic since its suposed to be a very “Republican” state. Over 60% of their counties are dry.

Sounds southern baptist nanny staters to me. Not republican.

As this election season is irrevocably driving home, Republican does not equal conservative, sigh.

This was predicted years ago by Rush and others during the height of the tobacco lawsuits.

Mississippi Pols Seek To Ban Fats

At first I read that as "Fan Bats" and wondered how the environmental extremists had managed to get so far in Mississippi. ;)

>>Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read,

LOL! That’s what I like, bipartisan nannyness.

And some will claim that Repubs are different! What a crock.

This violates not only basic discrimination laws(it’d be OK if they were smokers, since they have no rights) , but, if you assume fatties are handicapped, then the ADA as well.

I love it.

It’s not a conservative state. It’s a religious one. Flame if you want but as of the last few years, there’s a BIG difference. The religious right (not all but many) has taken a “Big Government for Jesus” path and that includes legislation to protect our temple, i.e., the body, through government mandate...

A lot of fat people are diabetic. Suppose they are going into insulin shock and walk into a restaurant to get something to bring their blood sugar up. I was once married to a diabetic. That kind of stuff happens more than you think. Not infrequently, we had to stop to get something to eat because of blood sugar issues.

Well that would free up the all buffet bars at the “all you can eat” establishments.

While the bill is certainly DOA, I can see future legislation somewhere to crack the door open to such a thing. It will start with sliding tax based on the fat content of foods. It will then go to banning fat people from buying certain foods. And it will progress from there.

And it will all be because of socialized medicine.

So any fat folk who travel to Mississippi and stay in a hotel-motel will have to pack a lunch?
