Hospital porter fired in crucifix row (UK) [Religion of Peace Alert!]
Manchester Evening News ^ | February 2, 2008 | Neal Keeling

Posted on 02/02/2008 7:28:55 AM PST by NYer

A HOSPITAL porter has been sacked after a row over a crucifix being covered up in a prayer room.

Joseph Protano, 54, was suspended four days after the incident last month at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

He has now been dismissed for gross misconduct, but intends to appeal.

Police quizzed him for four hours last month, on suspicion of religiously aggravated assault, but he was released without charge.

He denies the allegations and must wait to see if police take any action.

The row centres on a prayer room available to staff and visitors of all faiths at the hospital, which contains a Virgin Mary statue and a crucifix.

Mr Protano, a Roman Catholic who has worked two years at the hospital, entered the room when three Muslims were using it - two patients and a doctor.

An argument broke out after he asked them to remove a cloth covering the crucifix and statue and to turn a picture of the Virgin Mary face up.

He said he was unable to comment on his sacking as the police probe and his plans to appeal were ongoing.

But a friend said: "He was very shocked at the decision.

"He thinks he has been treated terribly.

"He loves his job and doesn't do it for the money - until recently, his employers were paying just £5.88 an hour.

"They are saying he should not have gone into the prayer room and it is alleged he used racist language, which he totally refutes.

"His pay has been stopped, even though he intends to appeal, and he has had to sign on for benefits."

The friend said Mr Protano went into the prayer room about six times a day to check the statue and crucifix were not left covered.

He said as a Christian, he felt it could be upsetting for visiting parents to find them covered up.

The case has angered many hospital staff, who think he has been treated unfairly.

Police said a file had been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide on any further action.

Quiz in an interesting word.

He assaulted the muslim's religion by attempting to practice his own.

With a nod to the freeper who first posted the following.

The following is a description (slightly modified) from Dr. Peter Hammond's book: Slavery, Terrorism and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat. www.frontline.org.za/books_videos/sti.htm

As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. In fact, they may be featured in articles and films, stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness.

At 2% and 3% they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs [Europe, Australia, USA and Japan]. Six percent of US prison inmates are Muslim. Like any other minority, they won’t integrate, but work to build their own separate community.

From 5% on they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. South Africa's Muslim population is 2%, but they control 35% of the businesses, a large percentage of the banks and have five Cabinet seats while Christians (77% of the population) have none.

They will push for the introduction of halaal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature it on their shelves (along with threats for failure to comply).

At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves under Sharia; Islamic Law. The ultimate goal of Islam is not to convert the world, but to establish Sharia law over the entire world.

When Muslims reach 10% of the population, they will increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. (Ei: car-burnings in France last October.) Any non-Muslim action that offends Islam will result in uprisings and threats.

After reaching 20% expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings and church and synagogue burning (India, Mindanao, Philippines).

At 40% you will find widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks and ongoing militia warfare [Indonesia].

From 60% you may expect unfettered persecution of non-believers and other religions, sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon and Jizya (infidel tax). (Sudan, Kosovo, Lebanon and Egypt).

After 80% expect State run ethnic cleansing and genocide [Western Papua (New Guinea), Iran, Biafra, Turkey and North Nigeria].

100% will usher in the peace of "Dar-es-Salaam" - House of Peace - as in Saudi Arabia, Libya and Yemen.

So, help me to understand here.

Covering up the Crucifix and Mary are NOT ‘crimes’ but UNcovering them are...

OK, got it. (I'm surprised they're allowed in the chapel at all these days or that the hospital isn't made to have a separate chapel...)

Forget Lononistan it’s already here in NYC. Schools have set up prayer rooms for Muslim studentts with rugs and wash bowls. Yet if I put up so much as a religious Christmas card in my classroom I get summoned to a meeting with the principal.

The Muslims do not realize that they are being used by the secular lefties as a stalking horse in their war on Christianity. If they do realize it, it’s because they are using the Left in their own Jihad against Christianity. I think it’s past time for Christian of all denominations to realise that the assaults on our faith and practice are not inconveiences or pinpricks, but an attempt to marginalize and eventually eliminate our faithful existence.

Christians of all kinds signed on to the Treaty of Westphalia back in the late Middle Ages. The purpose was to eliminate theological disputes as a legitimate cause for war.

From then on such disputes would be handled privately and without murder and violence.

The Eastern rite churches did not sign on (since they weren't involved), the Jews weren't invited to sign, and the Moslems weren't involved either.

What we need to do is return to the princples underlying the Treaty of Westphalia and where an adherent of a religion that didn't sign on seeks to visit our countries they should be rejected.

Quite possibly a standard form could be created for this purpose, backed with personal peace bonds and so forth.

No doubt this would put the ACLU out of business in the United States while crushing the Wahabi efforts in Western Europe. Might even put a crimp on the Greeks.

Where’s the msm on this issue? Has the NY Post written an article? If special accomodations are being made for the Muslims then similar ones should be made for Christians and Jews. Brookly used to be a major Jewish stronghold. How close is the Muslim community to the Jewish neighborhood?

Muslims out of the West. People who hate Western cultures should not be allowed to live in the West. They should be required to return to and stay in their Islamic hell hole countries of origin, natal or ancestral. See my tagline.

Actually, many Muslims have been invited into Western countries to do the menial labor considered 'below' the standards of the educated illuminati. This is especially true in Europe. Here in the US, the great influx of Arabic speaking immigrants are christians fleeing persecution in their homelands. In the Maronite Catholic Church I attend, they fret, worry and pray for those who remain in Lebanon. Another Maronite Church recently sponsored a family of Chaldean Catholics fleeing Iraq. These people are hard working, industrious and valuable contributors to our society.

OTOH, the large growth of Muslims around the world can be attributed to their unrestrained reproduction. My pastor's brother lives in Sweden. He said it is not uncommon for Muslim families, already poor, to have 12 to 15 children. Since they can't afford to care for them, they drain the resources of state programs intended for Swedish citizens. (See my post above from Pete Hammond's book).

It’s just a sign of muslim intolerance. I don’t see why they need to cover up the signs of other people’s faith at all. If I was going into an ecumenical prayer room, I wouldn’t feel the need, for instance, to cover up a koran.

Those who are indifferent to Christianity better get on board here. It is not just Christianity that jihadists want to eliminate.

These Islamists tolerate NO infidels in their midst.

President Bush warned our enemies that they are 'with us or against us'. . .Islamist jihadist warn the same; except they mean it.

This is actually “Manchesterstan”, in the North of England. After Leeds, one of the large Muslim population centers.

IMO, this is responsible for new business, construction, etc. favoring nearby Liverpool (the "European Capital of Culture 2008"...:^), which hasn’t managed to become quite a Muslim center yet...

PS .. knowing Liverpool, that probably should be Capital of Kulture 2008... that's how the Beatles would have spelt it...:^)

I didn't say anything about Maronite Catholics. I said Muslims who hate Western cultures should not be allowed to live in the West, and should be confined to their Islamic hell holes. Those who don't hate us and who do not try to impose their 8th century tribal BS on us are fine. Their reproductive habits are disgusting. The ones who come to the West and have 12 to 15 children and expect us to support them are PARASITES, and should be returned to their ancestral Muslim homelands.

way back when ,in the late 90s, LongIslandCity HS set up a prayer room in the auditorium during ramadam, gave them excused lateness due to THIER prayer time and had the qur’an set up in the main lobby’s trophy breakfront on display...
when I spoke with the pricipal, I was told the usual response,”you’re the only one complaining...”,and I was NOT complaining, only asking how this is possible as in this school there was no room for the Bible on display, excused lateness for our Holy Days of obligation etc.

This is the same scatology as when in my district, community board 1 appropriated 2 entire city blocks for a mosque’s PARKING lot forbidding any other parking on 2 muslim holy days. Now this is in an area where resident’s parking is next to nonexistent and the mosque is in a location with 2 municipal lots, one subway station and 2 bus lines a 3 minute walk away. When the community board was questioned as to who gave them the right to tell the local people where we can or cannot park our cars under PENALTY ($$) of law for a religious observance, I was told “this was required”. When they were asked as to what nyc requirememnt and why we never had any Christian requirements such as Easter/Christmas to allow the families to double/triple park to celebrate-—i was told that Cristmas etc.,were NOT a requirement and “did I attend community board 1’s meeting the night they appropriated those streets ?”
we got that nonsense stopped.

I don’t know what the present situation is in LIC HS as the last one graduated in 2003 and i haven’t paid them a visit since.
Unfortunately I didn’t think to take any pictures.

This story has me infuriated. What an utter outrage. England is a Christian nation, the Queen is "Defender of the Faith"!!!

I hear you. Way back in the early 90s ;) at my HS, we were allowed to go to Mass during holy days of obligation during school time (we were excused from class completely for the duration of the service.) This was a public HS, but people were just *slightly* more reasonable then. It’s funny how now it’s OK for an extreme minority to be granted such a boon, but if you’re in the Christian majority, well, to hell with you.

Having large numbers of children, in itself, is not digusting.

It is irresponsible, however, if the parents are not providing and caring for their own children; and if they are simply expecting society's publicly-funded structures to do it for them, it is exploitative as well.

The child-rich preferences of other cultures would not bother us so much, I think, if we ourselves were not stuck on steriliy. Looking at my own family tree:

This isn't "the assault of the alien cultures." It's the geno-suicide of the West.

I know that this is going to get me flamed, however a large part of what is going on here is power within the hospital that has very little to do with religion. Mr. Protano was fired because he is a porter, low on the hospital hierarchy. The others in the complaint much higher in hierarchy then he, "three Muslims were using it - two patients and a doctor". Doctors outrank everyone except administrators. If there is a complaint between a doctor and a porter, the porter losses.

This is not to say that Mr. Protano was not within his rights in his wish that the prayer room's furnishing not be changed by anyone who used the room, without permission from the hospital. I am also in no way saying that Islam isn't encroaching on fundamental freedoms of the Western World.

However, if there is a complaint between a Catholic doctor and a Muslim porter, the Muslim porter is going to loose. Mr. Protano was treated so poorly because he was a porter and the other person was a doctor.

Yet hospital workers are required to turn the beds of Muslim patients to face Mecca five times a day. Sick and hypocritical. The UK is lost.

Angela might have been thinking of the fact that many generations of first-cousin (or closer) marriages in some Moslem cultures have led to catastrophic levels of genetic defects. For example, Pakistanis living in Britain have over half the children born with birth defects in the country.

The solution to the mobs-of-immigrants-on-welfare problem is to eliminate welfare, but it won’t happen unless the voters demand it.

The thing I don’t understand is that if the Crucifix and the image of Our Lady meant nothing to the Muslims, then they could have just ignored them.

Yet they covered them and turned them away — so even Muslims believe they mean something...which actually places them a notch above atheists in my book.

Amish have very high rates of birth defects, because of something called "founder effect". Most of the Old Order Amish are descended from just a few hundred people who came here 2 centuries ago.

The Amish, however, are outstanding for providing for their own families without government largesse. They also have founded some woodcraft/carpentry industries which specialize in making adaptive toys and furniture for children and adults with various disabilities, this benefiting people far beyond their own communities.

There's something in the Koran (I can't seem to find the reference now--- maybe it's in the Hadith?) about how Allah wishes them to cut down all the crosses. The cross is offensive to them, a direct blasphemy because they believe that Jesus was a prophet and that Allah would never have let him be crucified. They believe that either somebody else was crucified on the cross in Jesus' place, or that the whole event was an illusion.

Therefore the cross is not, for them, neutral or irrelevant. It is directly provocative and sacrilegious.

Fr. Mark Gruber, an American Catholic priest, told me about an incident5 maybe 15 years ago, when he was visiting Egypt. He was by the shore of the Mediterranean and saw some children playing, making a kind of sand castle. He joined them and they had a nice time, laughing building this structure, decorating with with twigs and pebbles, etc.

After awhile, he made a little cross from two twigs and stuck it on the "steeple" he had made. The children looked at him in fear and horror. One of them started screaming and screaming, and the child's father (or some adult) came over. The man looked at the cross, and came at Fr. Gruber menacingly, and Fr. Gruber got out of there in a hurry, truly fearing for his life.

You are absolutely correct. That reminds me of a story I read last year. On a street corner in London, two men met. One was a Muslim Imam; the other was an Anglican rector. During the course of the conversation, the Imam swung his arm in a semi circle indicating the neighborhood in which they stood. He said to the Anglican recotor - "Do you see all these churches? Within a hundred years, they will all be mosques because we are reproducing and you are not.

There is no longer enough time for the west to match the growth rate of the Muslim communities.

way back when ,in the late 90s

That is not so long ago ... 10 years? My how the situation has changed downstate.

community board 1 appropriated 2 entire city blocks for a mosque’s PARKING lot forbidding any other parking on 2 muslim holy days.

Not good. There was a similar situation in Hamtranck MI which boasts a large Arabic speaking population. When the Muslim population reached a certain point, they appealed to the City Board for permission to install loudspeakers on their mosques to call the faithful to prayer 5 times a day. Permission was granted. Meanwhile, Catholic Churches were told to stop ringing their bells on Sundays as it 'disturbed' the local area residents. BTW - Hamtranck is also home to many Arabic speaking Chaldean and Maronite Catholic refugees from the Middle East.

Not far from where I reside in Albany NY, construction is now underway for a 2 minaret mosque. Ironically, it is adjacent to a Knights of Columbus Hall. Up until now, the only mosques here were store front operations. One of them was shut down when Federal Marshalls arrested the imam for attempted sale of weapons. The media have thrown their sympathy behind the imam and his congregation.

He assaulted the muslim's religion by attempting to practice his own.

That rather seems to be the crux of the matter, doesn't it?

Oh, yes, I think so.

One can only bend so far. I find this sort of story provokes the need to discern the true meaning of Christian charity.

I have to walk around these barbarians on the sidewalk when they toss down their oriental rugs in the direction of mecca during the day. But if were to walk through one of their cities praying a Rosary...what do you think would happen?
