Idahna, Oregon buried in snow; Mayor asks for emergency help

In Idahna, Ore., there is so much snow, residents' roofs are starting to collapse. The mayor has requested that Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski declare the area a state of emergency and send help.

Eighteen inches of snow fell in the last 24 hours on top to 6 feet of snow already there, Idahna Mayor Karen Clark said Sunday.

There is literally nowhere to put the snow.

"We have buildings with snow on them in danger of collapsing. Snow around doors in danger of bursting, some homes have already sustained damage," Clark said.

The town does not have the resources to deal with so much snow, according to the mayor.

Oregon State Corrections sent inmates in to help, but they need heavy equipment to get the snow off of road ways and homes.

“We are out of room and snow plowing money so are in danger of having to suspend snow plowing of the streets. Our citizens have now become in imminent danger as a result. We are also concerned about the citizens of Marion County that are out of our city limits and we are unable to help," Clark said.

"We are asking the Governor of Oregon for an immediate Declaration of State of Emergency and the National Guard to come in with heavy equipment.”

This doesn’t happen every year....there are unusual amounts of snow in the oregon mountains this year. (especially the windward side)

Its interesting, but just 30-40 miles away to either the east or the west...there is hardly any snow.

The difference between rural and metropolitan oregon and their poltical views, is almost like 2 different countries.

But the Metro Areas far outweigh the rural in population.

Please call Al Gore.

Kinda reminds me of a story from the recent Super Bowl. Eli Manning was asking Peyton Manning for some advice on the Super Bowl. Peyton told Eli, 'I think you are beyond getting advice from me'.

I think that amount of snow is beyond anything Al Gore and his BoBo's Warming Crowd can help us with. Look at Idaho. Majority of the land area has 50 or more inches of snow.

Another image from Colorado. This one illustrates what people caught in these blizzards mean when they say 'where do you put the snow ?'

Heavy snow troubles in Montana.

Officials to close I-90 for avalanche control

By JOHN CRAMER of the Missoulian

Interstate 90 near Lookout Pass will close temporarily Tuesday morning while highway officials try to trigger and clean up avalanches before they occur naturally.

Many modes of transportation have shut down over the years because of Montana's winter weather - airports, roads, railroads - but it will be the first time in state history that pre-emptive avalanche work closes an interstate highway.

More than 9 feet of snow has settled along I-90 and even more at higher elevations above the interstate.

Other sections of I-90 might be closed for more avalanche control work later this winter, but no final decision has been made.

“When we blow this one, we'll get an indication of how the others will react,” Moeller said.

These links from the NOHRSC web site really demonstrate just how much snow we have gotten this year in the Western US. For each area the first link shows the Snow Depth for the Present day February 5th 2008. The second link shows the Snow Depth for the same area 1 year ago today February 5th 2007. Amazing amount of snow as compared to last year. That may help explain why many people were caught unprepared. I mean really, who could have predicted this much of a difference in snow levels ?

Does anyone know if Idaho and Oregon have primaries on Super tomorrow?

Oregon isn't voting today, but since our voting is done by mail (yeah, I know - it's ridiculous), it wouldn't matter anyway, unless the mail can't be delivered to the polls. Don't know about Idaho.

Notice the time? I don’t sit in traffic jams, nor do I have to put up with icy roads, snow and bone chilling temps. Enjoy.
