A 21-year old Aruban came forward Monday to say that he is the mystery man that Joran van der Sloot implicated on undercover tapes, but claims that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Daury Rodriguez said he was contacted on Saturday by a frantic biographer of Van der Sloot's who, he said, warned him that his name was about to surface in the press as being the alleged accomplice who took Holloway's body out to sea in a boat and dumped it.

It doesn't fit the story, so you've got to do something about it. You've got to give me proof [of his whereabouts in May 2005], so I can put it in the newspaper ... here in Holland."
Rodriguez, who grew up on Aruba and played soccer with Van der Sloot when both men were teenagers, said he was angry that his name had been dragged into the case. He said he met with detectives investigating Holloway's disappearance on Monday morning, and that he told them he was living in Rotterdam, Holland in May 2005, when Holloway went missing.

That was my first thought too. Do Daury and Steve know each other? It seems to me that it could well have been Steve’s boat that was used. And where are the Kalpoe brothers in all this?
Yes, she has. We’ve had several black women who were tragically murdered in the Philadelphia area and Greta covered them. Their bodies were found in a shorter amount of time, though, so the story disappeared. The Holloway and Petersen murder cases continue because the bodies haven’t been found.

When a black woman is abducted or murdered, she isn't hired for the role by the media with an eye to ratings.
Oh, CJ, old old rant-rhetoric. Race is not what matters here, evil is. “One grain of sand” and all. If you want to make other names known, get them into the news, you should. Focusing on Natalee does not TAKE from the others. Evil is evil. Do we really need racial quotas in news reporting, too?
Its sad when anyone goes missing, but when a true stranger abduction is suspected or foul play is obvious, it would seem more newsworthy. Also extenuating circumstances like being 9 months pregnant, or the wife of a someone with connections in law enforcement or media would garner more publicity.
The media probably also does some selecting based on photogenic subjects or particularly titillating details. Do you suspect racism? I think its more profit driven. Whatever story will draw more viewers or sell more papers and magazines.
I’m sure there are plenty of missing pretty white women who are not getting media attention because they are suspected runaways, or under the radar like in the prostitution or drug trades. The whole Tawana Brawley incident showed the pitfalls of dealing with stories of low-class, publicity seeking, not too bright folks, black or white. Not too much interest in a missing “My Name is Earl” trailer-park trash type or someone taken by their pissed off drug dealer.
Could also be their family doesn’t have the resources or know how to attract the media in their cause.
Why do you consider that an indictment on the USA? Its all about the media selling advertising, isn’t it? No different from that Madeline McCann case in Europe, or the dingo-napped baby in Australia.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because he's a pathological liar?
And I do think he was there when she died, or fell ill. But I think he was also there when the body was disposed of.
I just he is incapable of telling the truth for more than one sentence at a time.
Her friends and family had no clues and no leads.
Her body was discovered less than two months later, and a suspect was in custody within days.
There was no dramatic twist like a husband who had been acting suspiciously and interefering with an investigation. There was no foreign police force giving a worried mother the runaround. There were no tantalizing eyewitness accounts of Samuels leaving a party with suspicious individuals. There was no outstanding subpoena for Samuels to testify to a rape charge. Samuels was not pregnant.
Samuels was sexually propositioned by a random man who lived in her building and when she rebuffed him he killed her and concealed her body.
These are not exciting, soap operaesque, movie-of-the-week details. Her story is one of a very cut-and-dried act of brutality.
If Natalee Holloway had disappeared from her local Birmingham, AL apartment and her body was found weeks later and some anonymous local guy who lived in her apartment complex confessed a few days later to killing her after she wouldn't sleep with him, it would have been a purely local story.
But Holloway went missing in exotic Aruba on a supposedly chaperoned school trip. Her parents were given the runaround by island officialdom. There was dramatic witness testimony from her friends and classmates about her last hours. The main suspect is the son of a prominent judge. No body has ever been found and the details of her death remain a mystery. No one has ever been indicted in her death.
It’s very possible he just rolled her into the sea all by himself and then called for a ride home.

Joran said on the tape that the Kalpoes don’t know anything. Could be true since they never “cracked”.
Seems to me, there is also the element of family involvement. Maybe some families jump straight to the media for exposure and others don’t.
On the other hand, I’ve seen plenty of exposure of the abuse of children, white and minority. I’m talking about some of those awful foster care stories.
It’s a TV show they are perfectly free to cover or not cover what they please.
Who took Joran and Natalee’s body to the boat?
